I'm an older dad with young kids (4 and 5). One night I was watching a recording of the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix. My older son put his video game down and sat with me to watch, mesmerized. He had always shown an interest in cars, but I never thought of him as a potential gearhead. I put on a video about the science and engineering behind F1 for him to watch, since he has a native love of engineering and science. One of the younger drivers mentioned that nearly everyone at the pinnacle of motorsport starts out in Karting. Sebastian asked me what karting was. He told me that he REALLY wanted to go. I saw that he was serious, expressing genuine interest in a sport for the first time. I looked around and talked with a few people who were involved in the karting scene in Colorado. One person recommended Action Karting highly. It's the nearest track to my house and the only one that rents to 5-year-olds (he's tall for his age but is not quite 48" which seems to be the requirement many places). I was told that Donnie was absolutely the best person to get young kids driving safely. I brought Sebastian and my younger son Tristan in. We met Donnie and the rest of the wonderful people who work there. Everyone was kind and encouraging in the extreme. We went back a few days later to a very warm welcome and rented a couple of karts to give it a try. Donnie loves kids and it became immediately apparent that I needed to shut up, watch and learn from this natural and passionate teacher. Lisa, who works there, got Sebastian suited up and Donnie began to teach. It was amazing. He took someone who still rode a bicycle with training wheels and got him to feel comfortable mastering internal combustion. Donnie quickly brought my son up to speed on how to drive, safety and the basic rules. He made Seb feel a confidence I hadn't seen in him before, at least not with an activity that was more sporting than academic. That day, on an empty track, Sebastian started driving slowly with me just ahead of him in my own rented kart. He loved it and I was thrilled. Donnie was genuinely excited as well. His joy at having helped my son was infectious and obviously shared by the rest of the staff. Seb fell in love with karting that day. We are now in the process of getting him his own kart (I'm getting one too, of course) with the intent of having him race at some point. For now we are just enjoying the unmitigated fun that comes from driving rental karts that are fast and grippy around a 0.7 mi outdoor track. It's the best. Karting has quickly become an important part of my bond with Sebastian. It's amazing to watch his confidence grow as he gets faster and faster while feeling that he is mastering something he loves. As you will have surmised from reading the other reviews here, this place is very special. Everyone who works there is awesome. The overwhelming majority of the reviews that I have seen are five-stars. I wish I could give it ten. Contrarily a reviewer about a week ago experienced it differently. She characterized it as mediocre. She said that the track and karts were not in good nick, that driving them was too strenuous and that she was dissatisfied with the wait time. I would respectfully suggest that she missed the forest for the trees. I'm sure that there are places in Colorado, many indoors out of the weather, that have shiny equipment, glass-smooth tracks and cold beer. But Action Karting has a beautiful track that my son and I love to drive, and their karts are well-maintained and fast. More importantly though, the place feels like home and the people are family. I can't imagine wanting anything more. Neither can my boys. If you want to go someplace and have an experience that will surely leave you grinning from ear to ear, this is it. If you want to the love of karting to infect your daughter or son, I highly recommend that you go. (They are open year-round as weather permits). I feel extremely lucky to have a business like this near me, and people like these in my sons' lives and mine. Sean

Kiddos to a family owned business that does a good job and makes one feel welcome (does not matter if they are 10 or a 40 year old kid)! Karts a bit beat up and the track a bit dated but frankly, still a blast for a group of guys or a family or a Dad with a few 10 year olds! Hint: cash gets you discounts! Hint 2: ask them for guidance on the kart - some a tuned different than others! Fun place!

People were great, karts were quick enough, the track was open but technical enough to be a challenge. The racing suits were a nice touch - would definitely come back here again.

Podium Kart was just the answer, offering a blend of adrenaline-pumping kart racing and the unique twist of axe throwing--all under one roof. We did not have a reservation, but just walked in. They were able to get us signed up for four races but unfortunately, our first race wouldn't take place for over an hour from when we arrived. To kill the time we signed up for axe throwing. Both of us knew to ask throwing we started off with just the basic target game and then moved on to the zombie and duck hunting games. It was a good competitive and humorous activity that made our wait go by so fast. The staff here is super nice and very helpful! I am tall so the pit master (not sure if that's what they really call him) had to help me adjust the seat backward and pedals forward. My partner had been go kart racing several times before, and was much faster than I was but still it was so much fun! It's pretty cool that they give you a piece of paper afterwards that shows your average speed laptops, and how you finish compared to the other people who were with you. And I plan to smoke him next time we go. Couple of tips: Ladies (and others with long hair) bring extra hair ties. It is a requirement to tie your hair back. Also be sure that you're wearing clothes toed shoes. This wasn't a problem for us because it was snowing outside so we both had boots on. You will smell gasoline fumes, so drink lots of water! Also, your arms will feel it after! Have Fun!

I recommend going when it's not crowded. Races are longer on weekdays before 5:00p, for the same price. Yes, cart racing is expensive, but they have a variety of deals that can make it more affordable. On our last visit, we tried axe throwing - it's fun too! There are decent food and drink options here, so it's got everything you need to have a seriously fun day. I try to present the good and the bad, so having covered a lot of good: We have had encounters with a couple of rude employees (but far more of them have been nice). And they need to do a better job of keeping up the karts; there were seatbelt issues on several karts that I recently drove, and one kart had the front cowling pushed back so far that my fingers were squashed against the steering wheel in turns. Sometimes a kart didn't want to start. Etc. All signs of a lack of proper inspection and maintenance.

Each racer got two 12 lap races, food & drink, one hour reserved seating, arcade tokens & top finishers got medals - plus all racers got to race together with a reserved time. The price was about $80 per racer. We paid separately for additional food for spectators. These go carts are electric, so no smell & pretty quiet. A few things to note, racers need to be at least 48 inches tall & if you have more than twelve racers you then split into two groups. Also, K1 has an Arrive & Drive option for just racing, it's first come first serve. The day we went was for a birthday. After checking in racers registered & signed waivers after which they got balaclavas & helmets. Instructions were given but it was rather hard to hear. Our racers had a blast...they loved it - it was a great experience. Right after racing our lunch was ready, it was served buffet style. We choose Cheese & Pepperoni Pizzas, BBQ & Buffalo Chicken Wings & soft drinks. There were no salad or vegan options. The pizza was good, however the wings were even better & delicious. Since we were a big group we had a private party room. The only outside food allowed was dessert. Our party ran smoothly, the staff was friendly & very helpful. All in all a great time!

The upper level is larger with faster go-karts, while the lower level is a smaller track that's perfect for junior racers. Since I brought my daughters, we chose the junior track, and it was a great fit. Each racing session includes eight laps, and the operation runs very efficiently. As soon as one group finishes, the next group is loaded onto the track, so there isn't much downtime. After each race, everyone receives a printout with their race statistics and final rankings, which adds a fun, competitive touch. The facility has a nice observation area with plenty of seating for spectators. They also offer carnival-style food and snacks like chicken nuggets, French fries, cotton candy, slushies, and drinks. In the back, there are arcade games to keep everyone entertained while waiting for their race. Check-in was quick and easy using self-service kiosks. If you've raced before, you simply sign in. New drivers can register in just a few minutes, and the staff was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable throughout the process. One thing I really appreciated was the focus on safety. My younger daughter was bumped during her race, and the go-karts stopped immediately. The staff quickly came over to check on her and made sure she was okay before asking if she wanted to continue. That level of attention was reassuring and showed they take safety seriously. The only downside is that it gets pretty loud inside with the music, so you may have to raise your voice to have a conversation. Other than that, it has a fun, energetic atmosphere that's great for families, friends, and anyone looking for an exciting outing. Overall, we had a great experience, and the girls really enjoyed it!

We've been coming out to IMI for years, mostly because there are limited options in this area, and…read morethe kids enjoy coming here. I personally can't say I share their enthusiasm, but we continue to come because they enjoy it. That said, I honestly don't understand the recent price increase when the overall experience and facilities haven't improved. For one bike for a 10-year-old, we paid $30, which feels pretty steep for what you actually get. The track itself may be enjoyable for the kids, although I personally think the tracks could be better, especially compared to others throughout the state. Either way, the amenities and overall experience for spectators simply don't justify the increased cost. There are extremely limited shaded areas for parents and spectators. There's basically one small area with shade in a large, wide-open space where most people are sitting in direct sun. More shaded seating would make a huge difference. And the bathrooms are a major issue. The porta-potties are consistently disgusting, there wasn't even toilet paper available for the women. That is a pretty basic amenity to expect at a facility that is charging admission. I also honestly don't remember seeing a trash can anywhere, which makes the lack of cleanliness even more frustrating. I could understand an increase in price if there had been meaningful improvements to the facility. For example, there is plenty of room for at least a couple of pavilions since the tracks are spread out, or even just some additional benches and shaded seating. Cleaner, properly stocked bathrooms, additional porta-potties, and adequate trash cans would also go a long way toward improving the experience. But as far as we can tell, literally nothing has changed. And this isn't a complaint from someone who showed up once and had a bad experience. We've been coming here for years, and I actually left a review two years ago with the exact same complaints about the dirty and unstocked porta-potties. Two years later, we're still dealing with the same issues. The kids want to continue coming, but if you're going to increase the price, then the quality of the amenities and overall experience needs to increase as well. At $30 for one kid to ride one bike, I just don't feel the cost reflects what you're getting. Hopefully some of that additional revenue can actually go toward improving the facilities and making IMI a better experience, not just for the riders, but for the parents and spectators who spend their time and money there too.

We just happened to be driving up to Grand Lake to do a scenic drive around this gorgeous lake and came across this go karting place that my kids wanted to try out! It's a mom and pops kind of place, which we totally LOVE to support especially when it has a story w/ a BIG heart behind it. Check in was super easy, they give you tokens for go karting or bumper cars. Since it's a small place, the wait didn't take too long. Our family of 6 was able to rent 3 doubles and raced each other. The crisp fresh air and the view of mountains in the background made it even more special. The carts ran very smoothly, the exhaust weren't smoky like alot of places, and they even make it fun by pouring out buckets of water to make the grounds slippery during the ride.. felt like we were on Mario Karts. ;) For the bumper cars, I can tell the owner controlled some parts to make us spin just to give us a good laugh. I loved that! Just observing the place, I can tell there was so much labor of LOVE put into this wholesome fun fun fun place. There was a repair shop with a cart hanging waiting to be restored with lots of tools hanging - the owner must be a super handy man. This past weekend marked 20th year anniversary for Rocky Hi Speedway and we had the priviledge of meeting the owner! Such a friendly guy and my obervation were all correct. Sad to see this place up for sale since it hasn't gotten much foot traffic, but gathering from our convo I felt like he would love to keep it running. Therefore, I would like to put this place on the map and give a special shout out to the guy who put all his heart and time into building this place!
