I have mixed feelings. We went during Spring Break. We were in Greensboro and decided to try it based on a friend's recommendation . Trying to find parking was a nightmare. It took over 20 minutes. Once we entered, we were greeted with "We're Closing soon. " it was 2:30. I explained about the parking hassle. She responded by huffing "I know." We got the gyro platter. Serving was pretty generous. With the gyro meat came 1/2 a boiled potato, plain. Rice (mushy) and green beans with tomatoes which was okay but possibly overcooked. The broccoli and Tzatziki were good. Our server counted out the register nearby while we ate. I asked about dessert, since we had already decided not to return. She said "I already rang you out." Dessert was hot and custard like. It was the best part. So the pricing wasn't terrible, the food was okay, and the service was questionable. How ironic that I ended up at this restaurant for lunch with my friend Andy after just having visited Greece! Just a couple of months ago I was sitting in a gorgeous hotel in Athens for $80 a night eating a huge Greek hamburger and staring at the Acropolis out of my balcony window. As the clock struck midnight at New Year's Eve, I had the added Joy of watching fireworks soar over this iconic ancient site. What a memory! So, it seemed only fitting when Andy suggested Acropolis that we meet there for lunch. I literally had not been in that restaurant for a decade or two. As a matter of fact, when I first moved to Greensboro, I think it was the only Greek restaurant in the area. I remember in my early years at The Community Theatre of Greensboro meeting many a client at the Acropolis downtown for lunch. Although I rarely dined there for dinner, I was a big fan of their moussaka, Greek salad and some other Greek dishes. Although this place never blew me away, I always enjoyed the meal and I remember the owner. She was a pleasant woman, always happy to see me and very welcoming and proud of her restaurant. I have a feeling she no longer is around but she made a lasting impression on me. So, I returned to Acropolis a few days ago. Absolutely nothing has changed LOL. The décor looks exactly the same, the menu looks the same and the atmosphere is the same. That's not a bad thing, just an observation. I ordered a diet Coke to start, and although I like unlimited servings from the fountain, I was okay with Acropolis giving me a nice big bottle for myself. It got me through the meal! Their menu is inviting and reasonably priced. They have specials everyday and I was excited to have the Greek chicken. Unfortunately, when I ordered it they told me it was gone. I ordered the chicken souvlaki platter and it was very tasty. Instead of the rice I asked for a double serving of vegetables which they accommodated. The green beans were quite good We arrived at 1:00 p.m. and the restaurant closes for lunch at 2:00. Unfortunately, the place was not very crowded and so at 2:00 p.m. we were the only ones sitting in the restaurant. I felt the pressure for us to leave which I did not appreciate. They kept clearing our plates and at 2:05 they turned off some of the lights. I understand they wanted to go home but I don't think you should be rushing patrons out of your restaurant 5 minutes after the closing time if they are still in the middle of their meal or conversation. Just saying! Feeling like they wanted us to leave, we headed out. I have mixed feelings about the rating for this restaurant. On the one hand, I felt I was pushed out of the door after 2:00 p.m. I would have liked to have seen unlimited fountain drinks and I was turned off by Greek chicken being offered as a special of the day but being told they don't have any more. On the other hand, kudos to any restaurant that can sustain itself for decades and decades like Acropolis has. Now they are across the street from the baseball stadium. I also was shocked but pleasantly surprised that there was free parking on the street right down the block from the restaurant. In honor of longevity and being the first Greek restaurant to be brave enough to open in downtown Greensboro, I'm going to give them some kudos but would advise them in the future to give people a chance to enjoy their lunch or tell them when they walk in at 1:00 p.m. that they have 1 hour to eat and then they need to get out! LOL I would have to say that I do prefer places like Odeh's, Nazareth Bread and Mythos, but if you are downtown and want to experience a nice sit-down experience of a Greek meal from a restaurant that has stood the test of time, I would head to the Acropolis! It didn't compare to my sitting in my hotel room in Athens, staring at the real Acropolis on New Year's Eve, but I had an enjoyable lunch and very enjoyable company! read more

I went a month or so ago and the food was so good I brought 3 friends back with me last week. They were all impressed with the food, especially spanikopita (spinach pie) saganaki (flaming cheese), and said they wanted to introduce other friends to the place. To top it off, a man played traditional Greek music throughout the evening. He performs on Friday and Saturday evenings--a very nice addition to the meal. read more

I'm sure in its glory days it was very special. Charming appeal and old world charm but food was disappointing. Specifically went for the Saganaki after losing our favorite Greek spot, Athena in WS. It was a liquid and soapy display of what should have been flambé cheese. After an hour wait, hair in the salad, and the mediocre Chicken Slovakia and watery rice would have made a great soup. Closing time is advertised incorrectly as 9:30pm. We were excited to be trying this restaurant for the first time this evening at 8:15. Before we could even get in the door we were greeted very rudely with "we close at 8:30!" we pointed out that their time is 9:30 online and were told "no, it is 8:30 online and on the door!" We had the large appetizer platter, the gyro, Greek fries, the chicken soup, and the baklava. In my younger years, I traveled a lot and grew up in a large Greek community. So when I say I've had my fair share of Greek food, I mean it! This restaurant has got to be in the top three, if not the best place I've ever had! I wish I could remember all the names, but on the appetizer platter, there was this cheesy egg pastry that was so very tasty and everything was so fresh! If I had to say anything negative about it, it would be the meatballs were underwhelming after all the rest of the tasty stuff! My gyro was excellent as well, and the meat was dusted with herbs, which made it very different from any I had before. The Greek fries, however, weren't the best. Frozen crinkle fries with a hint of spice... only good thing is they were cooked perfectly. I didn't try the soup, but it was creamy looking. My guest said it was good, but could have used a little salt. And let's talk about the baklava! My god! I have never had any, anywhere with cinnamon and cloves! I have had hundreds upon hundreds over my lifetime from all kinds of places, but never any as tasty as these! The waitress was quick and attentive, and the food came out with minimal wait time. I ordered a pizza for delivery right after the saganaki arrived. I highly recommend ordering a pizza and skipping this place. I went in with low expectations. Unfortunately, those weren't met. My son was so disgusted by the taste of the saganaki that he barely ate anything else at dinner. I wish my wife and I had canceled our entrees and just paid the check. The service was okay. We walked in and the smells and looks reminded us of our favorite Greek restaurant in New York where we went many times when we first got engaged and it was one of the first places we dined out with our then newborn son. That is where the similarities end. It was my wife's and my 19th wedding anniversary. If I had taken her here when we were dating, we probably would have broken up. We planned to celebrate another night because of the gala. So back to the saganaki. The fire wouldn't go out (maybe too much booze) and the seeds from the lemon ended up in the cheese. Our server, who was relatively new and could not pronounce some of the dishes correctly gave a mild "Opa!" right after. That should have been the first sign of trouble. We were starving and ate it but I regretted that 2 hours later. The pita tasted like it came from a bag. Then came the lentil soup, known as "fakes." Well, maybe it was fake. It definitely had lentils but calling it soup was generous. It lacked flavor but at least it was hot. I wish it had scalded my tongue so I wouldn't have to taste the rest of the food. My son had the avgolemeno, chicken lemon soup. Took a few tastes and said it tasted like it had been sitting for days. Then came my salad. That was the highlight of the meal - fresh and nicely plated until I took a bite of one of the onions. Now I can tolerate some of the hottest and spiciest flavors - this may have been my Waterloo. Next is my son's gyro platter (no pita), and my wife's lamb kebob. The gyro appeared to be the frozen kind you can buy at the supermarket or Costco. The kebob was okay according to my wife. She had 2 slices of toast and butter when we came home. My son commented at the end of the meal that it tasted like a Sysco Food Service meal. This place might be older than me by a year but I think it's well past its expiry date. I hope to outlive it although, with the way my stomach feels right now, I am not so sure. Absolutely hands down best Greek food in Greensboro!!! Right downtown with street parking all around across from the Greensboro Grasshoppers stadium! Has been in business for years, has even withstood through all the construction and growth in downtown nearby and is family owned. Now that I live downtown, I frequent this spot regularly and have tried so many of their items but nothing can beat their souvlaki chicken - it's cut in small pieces and seasoned like no other with green spices! Love their light and fresh horiatiki salad (a genuine Greek salad without lettuce) with their Greek vinaigrette. Was extremely impressed with their Greek marina and meatballs too - honestly better than some local Italian spots!! Everything they make is fresh and to order - always so delicious!! If you order takeout, they always give you a sweet treat with it too - it's a homemade baklava cupcake that has yummy cream cheese frosting!! I'm not a sweets person but I would eat these over and over! Every time I order from this local spot, they're kind, helpful if you have questions on their menu and treat you like family when you go in! I was in the mood for something different today and happened to be walking by Acropolis. It has an old school sort of feel but is clean and well maintained. I was immediately greeted by a very friendly hostess/waitress. I was there on a cold day and had the chicken soup and spanakopita, both were excellent. The soup was hearty with plenty of chicken and rice, and had a nice flavor of chicken with a hint of lemon. The bowl was a generous portion and was the perfect lunch on a cold day. The spanakopita was a positive surprise in the size of the portion and the thickness of the piece. It was well constructed and full of spinach with a nice flavor and texture. Additionally, the phyllo dough was very nice. Discrete, thin layers, flavorful and crisp...it was the perfect accompaniment to the soup. In fact it is delicious, especially the Greek style chicken which is on the menu 3 days a week .. and everything is made in the restaurant by the son of the original owners . I love the old world charm , however , due to an incident I can not go back there again . I was the only person in the bar area with a large loud television on one of the news stations which I found disturbing . I do not need politics shoved in my face when wanting a nice quiet meal . I asked for the tv channel to be changed or the tv to be turned off . A member of the family told me "you can't come in here and tell us what to do " instead of changing the channel .. It has been more than a little while since we've tried the food here. We did take out, and the order included the house specialty, Athenian Baked Chicken (2 orders). We also order the large Assorted Appetizer Platter ( Keftethes, Spanakopita, Tiropita, Dolmathes, Feta Cheese and Salonika peppers along with choice of Tzatziki or Taramasalata, served with pita), Hummus, and and additional side of Tzatziki. Total food cost $59. The Greek chicken remains a nice item (though the side dishes don't rise to the same level), but not as flavorful as in previous trips here. The Keftethes (meatballs) were very, very good, as was the Tiropita, and the small Greek Salads. Everything else was average at best, with the Hummus being especially disappointing - lacked freshness and was darker than any Hummus I've seen in the area. Don't see a revisit here - sad! read more

We ate at this cozy restaurant for the first time last night and the food was delicious. My husband and I both had the grouper sandwich which comes with soup, salad, or fries. Have lived in Greensboro my whole life and never been here so was excited to try it out before a baseball game. Had heard really good things about the food, in fact one of the best kept secrets! We got there about 20 minutes after it opened with a party of 10. The signs do clearly say they can only seat 4 top tables. We didn't see that at first so when the lady behind the bar said they couldn't accommodate 10 we told her we were happy to split up into 3 separate tables/bills etc...She rolled her eyes and was obviously exasperated. Every time I come to Greensboro I stay at the Hyatt in downtown and my special walk as soon as I get in is walking to Acropolis. Their food is amazing, did you knew they are old family recipes!! Those are the best!! Yes they are and you can tell that Johnny the owner, learned from mom. The food is always good, prices are really good, everything is fresh and plenty for the price. We have been going here for over 20 years. Sadly, I will never go back. Tried to take 80 year old mother in law for birthday dinner. There were 6 of us, 2 kids. They will only serve table 4 people and not split. Restaurant not full and only 1 waitress. We were willing to wait etc. no go. Honestly. Food has not been great over the last few years.
