Searched to check the hours, and saw that it had only one review - a rather negative one. Thought…read moreI'd balance it out. I've been here many times. Always found them to be very patient and helpful. The hardware store always has what I need. I used the lumber yard for a deck, with no issues. The prior review complained about handyman references. This is the Catskills. I've gone through roughly a dozen folks here. They all came recommended. They all were a huge disappointment - some after a few jobs, some after one. I've learned never to pay half up front without references, and I've posted to social media those folks who take half up front and disappear. Sadly, it has happened a couple of times. It's not the fault of the establishment thst recommended them.

I relied on them to refer me to a contractor to do a roof repair on my home and they only provided me with two names. I went with Joe Remley- Builder/ Contractor or Ashland, NY and it turned out he was not such a good reference. In fact I had an awful experience. Remley required that I give him a down payment of several thousand dollars to have my roof repaired. I paid Remley the money he wanted and never saw him again. He didn't do any of the work he was supposed to do and has not been responsive to phone calls. Joe Remley is not directly affiliated with Ace Hardware/ Williams Lumber, that I know of, but I relied on Ace Hardware/ Williams Lumber to provide me with a reliable contractor and he wound up ripping me off and scamming me out of thousands of dollars with no work done. This is more of a warning to others to watch out for Joe Remley and to not put so much trust into Williams Lumber for contractor references. Very disappointed.

A few days ago, however, I had the single worst experience taking a lumber delivery in over forty years of taking such deliveries. The delivery person, who identified himself as Abdul, was abusive, aggressive, and physically threatening. Whether he misheard my response when he asked where I wanted the material, I can't say, but he got out of the truck and walked thirty feet to get nose to nose with me and tell me to "back off." He refused to offload the material, opting to continue his diatribe and threatening demeanor, until I had unloaded half of it. I attempted to call the office during this and was unable to get through. I called afterward and left a message for Chris to please call me to resolve this episode, but heard nothing back. I called three more times, and each time Abdul answered the phone and informed me that Chris was "indisposed." I called again and managed to get Chris on the phone, and when I explained the incident, his initial response was defensive and essentially telling me that I was obviously mistaken because they've never had a complaint. I explained that I've dealt with their organization many times with great results and this was an outlier, and he relented somewhat and said he was "hearing me and talking it very seriously" and that he'd look into it and get back to me. It has been over a week and no "getting back to me" has occurred. The bottom line for me here is that Woodstock Building Supply charged me fifty dollars to deliver five sheets of plywood (total charge was $537) sent an aggressive, confrontational, abusive, emotionally unstable person to my home, and now refuse to be accountable to a paying customer. Paying for abuse? No thanks.

However the restaurant owners were on vacation leaving me with a 15 minute waiting time before Curtis lumber opened at 7am. Curtis lumber has been in existence for over 100 years and is headquartered in Ballston Spa near where I live. They have over 23 locations in upstate NY. They carriy a selection of plywood, treated lumber, dimension lumber, hardwood and engineered lumber. To make things simpler its just a lowes or home depot that is locally owned and smaller in size. Buy and shop local.

What a disgrace to call this a family run and family oriented business. It is nothing of the kind…read more Jay-K was a legit family run and oriented business. I understand the purpose of a business is to make a profit but to do so at the expense of the community and the employees is not. I would recommend Lincoln Davies, Ilion Lumber or many other of the small family owned and operated suppliers in the area every day over Curtis Lumber which is simply concerned with the dollars at the end of the day rather than the wellness of the community or the future of its staff. I have been very successful in my career and have had the opportunity to shop at many Curtis locations. I shopped at them only because they had bought up the local stores and in some cases shut them down and there simply was no alternative within a decent range. I just paid the price and went on with things. Almost always, the employees (salespeople and yard workers) were top notch but boy oh boy did I hear many complaints about the management. Both from said employees and other customers. It seemed like policies were designed to alienate and annoy the customers, the people who keep a store open. Yes they offer a military discount but to make it so that EVERY TIME I SHOP, I must go through a ten question interrogation, pull out ID's, ...spend an extra 5 minutes in line to do so and annoy anyone in line behind me (which actually there rarely is) to get a 10 percent discount which might just might bring the item(s) cost in line with the competitors prices seams ridiculous. Put me on file until I am dead and when my name pops up...give me the discount or simply do not offer it at all. Everything they do seems to annoy me as a customer. One time I was told an item was in stock and when I stopped in to pick up said item. I was told "in stock" meant that one of the Curtis locations had at least one of the item in inventory. That could have been Ballston Spa or even Vermont. I guess the management at Curtis does not consider that a lie and maybe technically it isn't but to mislead a customer in that way is just another example of hot to disenfranchise a customer. Please people take care of the businesses that take care of you. Curtis Lumber I assure you is NOT one of them.
