The school not only teaches the art of Taekwondo but also the Korean language. They offer a wide variety of programs for both adults and children and are reasonably priced compared to other schools. I started going when I started grad school as a way to focus on both my mental and physical health. In addition to physical changes to my body, I've also noticed that I have a better time focusing and have a lot more patience for whenever I do something. The instructors are great and the owners are some of the nicest people you will meet! Even if you are a beginner and have never tried anything like this (which is how I was), don't be afraid to try it especially when I transitioned from kickboxing to muay thai. Everyone there is extremely supportive and will always encourage you to do better not only on the mats but in everything you do in life. Another added bonus is that you get to meet and train with amazing people!

Signed my child up here to go month to month. Tried to quit for the summer and possibly start again…read morein the fall and was told that I'd be charged a fee to quit! We were never informed there was a fee to quit when we signed up, Jennifer Luth said most people just pay all summer and not go (why would anyone do that?) and make them up during the school year?? (which is adventageous for them because they still get their money and you'd likely forget how many makeup classes you needed or you just wouldn't be able to do them because of other activities) or we could pay a fee to leave. I replied to her email on June 16 to ask what this fee is and received no response as of June 29th. We've had to call our bank to stop the charges. And no, I specifically chose to handle this via email so I would have written proof. As for the classes, I was not at all impressed. There was no actual karate taught, instead my child spent the hour playing duck duck goose, red light green light, doing basic obstacle courses or running back and forth. Overall, We had a lousy experience, felt like we were taken advantage of and cannot recommend this place.

The owners, Mike and Jen, and the staff are very dedicated to the style and to the students who come for training. As a practical style Uechi Ryu requires consistent and continuous practice and dedication, under direct supervision and practice outside of regular classes. They go out of their way to train the students properly and also provide many opportunities for everyone to support local charities. The school and training is not just about karate and physical action, the style and the school emphasize a whole-person concept of positive behavior and community, both inside and outside of the dojo. I highly recommend a visit to see exactly what it is like.

Twenty years in, and after a substantial hiatus due to a job that wouldn't let me get to this…read morestudio in time for class, I'm back here. These instructors, and these classes, are fantastic. I love how everybody here is friendly, supportive - but also won't coddle you along if you're just stuck in a rut of self-pity. The beginner class is usually divided into four sections: 1. warm up, where you actually stretch out just about every part of your body. Great if you've been sitting at a desk all day. 2. basics, where you work on some basic aspect of kicking, punching, or stances. 3. forms, where you do what would be kata in standard karate; this is my favorite part. The class usually splits into several groups at this point, depending on experience. There's almost always at least one or two beginners in the back working on Long Fist I, so don't worry if you don't know what you're doing - you're not alone! 4. self-defense, where you work on drills to deal with things like wrist grabs, punches, and kicks. I have *used* these (alas) twice, and in both cases, the hours of drilling I did took over while my brain was locked up. Instructors Mark, Karen, and Jonathan are fantastic, and I was classmates with Instructors Melissa and Jason until I had to drop out. They're terrific people, and there is none of the "buy-a-belt, learn to master the soooper seeeekrit martial arts" vibe I've gotten from other dojos. You sweat, and you learn, and everybody's supportive of that. They are also supportive of the fact that people may come in with pre-existing conditions, and will not make you do the idiotic "push through the pain" thing when you're actually hurting yourself. (I've had teachers who did this, and am very grateful not to be putting up with that anymore.)

For adults, they meet you where you are in terms of fitness and knowledge, from absolute beginners to students who been practicing for years, and they then figure out how you can improve from there. For the kids, I have never seen a team of instructors invest such attention and care to every child in every class and then achieve success through positive encouragement. I've been a student myself for over ten years, as has my child, and I'm still learning and growing. Can't recommend highly enough!

My decision to joining Master Tewfik and GMAS Karate has been one of the best decisions of my life…read more I was becoming bored with my normal fitness routine of going to the gym, running on the treadmill, lifting free weights, etc., I wanted to improve my fitness regimen with something more exciting and where I could learn a new life skill. Learning how to defend myself or how to respond to a situation where I need to defend my family seemed like an important skill to have, so I decided to join Master Tewfik's Muay Thai classes three times per week. He also teaches Karate. The classes are exactly how I hoped they would be. Between the incredible stretching techniques he teaches you (which I never would have tried on my own!), the patience and discipline to assess the environment and respond proactively or reactively with defense or offense, the intense fat-burning cardio you get from the various kicking and punching exercises with heavy bags and weights, and the camaraderie I have with my fellow Muay Thai members due to our common dedication to the art, I couldn't imagine not having Master Tewfik's Muay Thai class part of my weekly fitness regimen. Not only am I getting in incredible shape, but I am also learning some key life skills on how to defend myself and asses challenging situations. You get the best of both worlds...fitness and life skills! And all of this under the direction and mentorship of a Master and teacher who genuinely cares about your progress and happiness in your life. He is friendly, patient, and kind. He truly cares about his students and does everything he can to make you feel comfortable jumping into such a physically-intensive activity as Muay Thai. I look forward to this class so much and even bought a heavy bag to practice on non-class days! If you live in the area and want a new way to improve your fitness regimen and learn a new, key life skill, give GMAS Karate a try!

Tom (or "Sir" as he is respectfully known by his students) has been an ideal teacher, leader, guide and mentor for my sons. It is important to note that I highly recommend Tom's martial arts academy for any child, whether highly athletic and "ready to go," or for kids who are less physically confident and more reticent to explore physical activities. My sons have gotten immeasurable benefit from the strengthening, conditioning, flexibility, and agility that comes from martial arts, and in addition their time with Tom has made an indelible imprint on their character, personality, sense of Self, and commitment to integrity. I am so happy that we found Tom, and will always be grateful for his impact on my sons.
