I waited a long time to get a massage from my former classmate Kai since graduating. We were in KRS together and he's worked on my body before in undergrad. I loved it when he would do manual manipulations and stretching on me because he really got "in there" and would explain why what was hurting and so forth. My massage was intense to say the least. He opened up my scapulae from an old volleyball injury. I never felt so loose afterwards. I didn't mind the explanation of why it was hurting cause it felt like college days. He wanted to recreate a natural atmosphere like I was getting lomilomi on the beach or outside so he played natural ocean music which had be drifting! I needed it cause when he got to my lower body AKA my legs and lower back I'm a baby. He took his time and went over time to make sure he got everything. I loved and appreciated that he stretched the hell out of my hamstrings, hip flexors, quads and calves. At one point he lifted me off the massage bed which is a big feat cause I'm 6'2. To say I'm satisfied is an understatement. I always love my time with Kai and my massage was one for the books. Wow! I've never had a therapist more capable of so many modalities and the ability to change each session to the needs of the day! I've gone back now three times and each session was uniquely tailored to what I said were my pains, concerns and needs! Without a doubt, I will return! I've had many massages before, but my experience with Kai at Ace Heal Massage, has got to be THE BEST massage I have ever had! My regular therapist was on vacation. In need of a massage, I looked for another therapist who was conveniently located to work or home. That's when I stumbled upon Ace Heal Massage located in downtown Honolulu. His office was a 5 minute walk from work. I booked a massage with Kai because he had reasonable rates. As soon as he opened the door, Kai smiled and offered me some water and the use of his restroom facilities. The place was immaculate and had a great view. Prior to the massage, Kai clarified my needs with me. I mentioned that I had been trying to get in shape and was going to the gym more often than before. The muscles in my upper body and lower back had been tight due to weight training and group exercises. Kai was very attentive, took notes, and addressed my problem areas. Kai was very comfortable to talk to and had genuine concern for my overall health. When he showed me the massage room, I noticed all the certifications and diplomas lined up against the wall. I thought to myself that this guy knew what he was doing and that I was in good hands. I requested a much needed deep tissue massage. Taking that into account, Kai warmed up my muscles with heat pads to help sooth my aches and pains. When he had begun to work on me, I knew I had a new massage therapist. He used a combination of modalities and the pressure was just the way I wanted it. His extensive knowledge of the human anatomy, combined with his natural rhythm and flow, resulted in a very unique style I've never experienced before. It was very therapeutic and rejuvenating. The knots in my muscles dissipated. The pressure was firm, assertive and appropriate for each body part. Whenever he was about to apply deeper pressure, Kai guided me to take deep breaths and to exhale slowly. His affirming and relaxing method maintained my peaceful state and kept me comfortable. If I could describe the massage experience in one word, it would be EXCEPTIONAL!! On the downside, my feet get cold easily. If the room temperature was a little warmer, the massage would have been perfect; then again, that was my fault for not saying anything. Overall, the massage, or rather put the experience was amazing. If you look up the meaning of the word "Ace" its definitions include "high quality" or "top notch". I am always a little weary about going to anyone other than my regular massage therapist. As he is popular and really good and travels a lot he can be hard to get a hold of. So one has to venture out and try someone else when muscles call for a massage. I had gone to one guy a few weeks ago and man oh man was that a mistake. The table was a high inflatable bed on the ground. The massage was just aweful and I could not leave quick enough. I thought I would try again and I found Kai. He is very experienced and really knows the human body. He hit areas on me that I was not aware needed working on or were sore. His techniques are greatly varied from his wealthy knowledge of differing modalities. He helped me breath through the difficult areas and boy did I feel amazing afterwards. I usually fall asleep during a massage. This one I was increasingly aware of my body and its needs. He is very focused on the body and its areas of need. He hit all the right spots in the time I was with him. I actually would liked to have booked longer but as I did not know him I did not. He also had another appointment shortly after mine. 3 stars. One of the hardest reviews I've ever had to write. Massage is a great thing and really is essential to health. We spend so much on other things that I agree with Kai when he said it's ultimately an investment in oneself. Great point! The work that Kai put into my massage is undeniable. He knows his anatomy and obviously is a natural healer turned massage therapist. Our session started with an assessment that was lengthy, but necessarily thorough. The setting is a calm, clean and relaxing apartment at Capital Place. Although I primarily came for my sprained left ankle and possible onset of bilateral cubital tunnel syndrome, Kai provided a full body pampering that was firm and sometimes challenging for me, but he breathed me through these stages and I am appreciative for his finesse. I cannot explain his unorthodox massage techniques as it is a combination of skills I was not familiar with. Also, he facilitated most of the massage shirtless. He defiantly uses his entire body to maximize long strokes with continual, even pressure. Hard work yes! Massage: 4 stars. Initial difficulties were trying to penetrate the Fort Knox style security and navigating into Capital Place. The supposed ample free parking went totally unnoticed by me as there were no signs indicating where they were or even which direction I should drive in the parking structure. Seriously no signage as I literally lost all orientation (as did several other cars I noticed). I eventually parked in their paid section ($9). Following Kai's direction to enter the building via Queen Street, I press the intercom there and for 5 minutes I get nothing. Someone tells me the thing is broken. So I climb the 200 feet of stairs with my sprained ankle to their main lobby and about four security guards start questioning me as to where I was going and what my business was. I gave them my information, registered my car, gave blood and submitted to a retina scan (just joking, but you get what I was feeling, right?!) Then one of them escorts me to the elevator and selects my floor via turn key. Damn, what have I gotten myself into? Ease of entry: 2.5 stars. After the massage, feeling totally relaxed and temporarily pain free, I settle payment with Kai. Apparently, he has a 25% off a 90-minute yelp check-in deal. Also, I previously bought the $55 worth $80 deal via yelp. So, I'm like, sweet! Let's do the math and see how great this deal is: Cost of a 90-minute massage was $120 - 25%= $90. Then kick in my $80 (for $55) and my damage should come out to: 10 buckaroos, right?!!! Well, not really. Kai was unfamiliar with how to handle the yelp deal and ended up giving me the 25% off and a credit of only $55. So my out of pocket was $40 + $7.62 (credit card fee). So my "deal" turned out to be $102.62. Marketing/Payment: 2.5 stars. So now comes the hard part. I lost track of the time during my massage, but Kai went over an hour and said he just went with what my body needed. I'm not complaining, but that put me in a precarious position of feeling obligated to pay more and downplay my yelp deal (the reason for me coming in the first place). I guess it was my responsibility for checking the clock. I totally understand that providing these deals can be a win win situation for client and business provider as repeat customers are always a great thing and probably Kai's motivation for offering them in the first place. Ulterior marketing? So therein lies the conundrum and instead of a raving review, my experience comes with some hiccups that may have been avoided if the terms were clearly defined perhaps before the massage began. Frustrating to relaxing to frustrating again, best defines my experience. Caution: These deals come with strings. Tips to live by and such is life I guess. The first time I went to Kai, I was hesitant at letting a male massage me. I had only been to females masseurs in the past. He made me feel completely at ease and relaxed and I thoroughly enjoyed the massage. As a waitress, I constantly had a sore back and Kai is a master at what he does. When I was pregnant with my first child, he worked on me as well. His knowledge of the human body and how it applies to massage is vast. Not only that, he is a genuinely friendly person and it was easy for me to relax and feel comfortable with him. I was impressed with place of business. It was clean and calming and very soothing . I've been to him on several occasions and have recommended it to all my friends and co-workers. His massages have varied and that is because Kai just "seems" to know what my body needs.
