Gill-Roy's has been around since 1945. Founded by Gilbert Morgan and Roy Trevarrow down in Flint,…read moreMi. Not too long ago they took over the local True Value hardware store. Hopefully, they help boost commerce here in East Jordan. I'm putting a spin on this write up. Looking at it from a different perspective... While at Gill-Roys I see a much needed tool for $20 that I know I can get at Sam Walton's place in Petoskey for $12. It's important to remember you can't fairly compare a 40 store hardware company in Michigan to a chain of 4,700 outlets across the US. The buying power differences alone make it impossible to compete in price. Next, the tool at Gill-Roys is top quality and made strong in the US of A. The knock-off at Sam's was made overseas and I question the durability. Then there's the availability of a knowledgeable individual to answer questions or guide me in the right direction. Most of the big box stores don't offer it, Gill-Roys has several friendly, qualified and experienced people to point me straight. Finally, I have to drive 40 minutes and wait in a long line at the major retailers. If I need that tool immediately, it's in my hands at work on the project in 20 minutes time. To sum it up, it's more frugal to make the drive to the city and pay less (sometimes), if you know what you need, can settle for a lesser product or are in no hurry. The advantages of local hardware, such as Gill-Roys, are convenience of location, experienced staff to draw upon and a better selection. Where else can I buy just 4 screws as opposed to a box of 100? 12/23

We've lived in town for a few years, but we hadn't understood the full value of this store until we…read morebought a home that was in desperate need of a complete gutting and remodel. Here's why we shop at McLean's: 1. OUTSTANDING customer service with people who know where things are, and KNOW how to get things done! I have asked so many questions, received so much good advice, and I am certain that our home wouldn't be as far along as it is today without the help of the men and women who work in this store. Joe, Gary, Nancy, Cathy, Terri, Kip, Jeremy, Jessica, Alyssa, Celina...the list goes on and on. They've even helped me find solutions, multiple times, that didn't require me spending a penny in store! 2. UNBELIEVABLE selection of products. They probably carry what you're looking for, and if not, they'll tell you where you can get it. (More than once I've been told to head to another store to get a product they didn't stock...who does that??). Whether it's lumber, hardware, tools, or some miscellaneous bolt that you need to prevent a barn door from sliding off its rails (for real!), they have it. 3. LOCAL employees, local owners, and this is a company that invests in the community. They hire a lot of teenagers and work with their school and sports schedules like few other companies do. One of our kids worked for them and we couldn't believe how well they paid her, and how graciously they worked with her athletic and academic schedules. Locally owned matters. 4. COMPETITIVE pricing to go with their significant inventory. Sure, you can occasionally save money on certain products by hitting up the big box stores, but not having to drive 35 minutes (each way), or not having to try and find someone to help answer your questions (seriously...McLean's staff are plentiful and their experience is unmatched!) is worth a few extra dollars. 5. FREE popcorn. yeah, if you were on the fence before you now have a reason to make this store your go-to for hardware and lumber. You can't be sad and eat popcorn at the same time. So if you like locally owned hardware stores that have outstanding customer service, great inventory, competitive prices, and free popcorn...McLean's is the place for you!

Fencing materials. Supplies for dogs, cats, small pets ... but also horses, cows and other small livestock. I have a bad memory that has not faded much over time. I think this place opened back in 2006 or 7. When it opened, there were bulk dog biscuits for sale. We got some, and within a couple of weeks, meal worms hatched out of them. Ew! From a brand new store? They must have bought old stock from some other store. On my recent visit, I did not see any bulk dog biscuits, and not very many dog biscuits at all. I am very, very careful not to get anything with ingredients from China, so I didn't see anything that really attracted me. I did notice Blue Buffalo cat & dog food. Along with some more common kibbles. There were a lot of leashes and harnesses for cats & dogs. What I don't like is that whenever I'm in a store like this, I have to keep an eye on my dog, who loves to find fallen kibble on the floor. She doesn't have any allergies, but I still don't like the idea of her eating anything I can't identify. We usually stop in for hardware items. That's about all this place is good for, in my opinion. Oh, and visiting the parrot.
