Mark Marble, the founder of Accessurf Hawaii came to speak to our community group today on the mission statement, the vision of Accessurf and the desire to help people in all walks of life, of all ages, no matter what disability (physical, mental or both) and to turn them into "abilities" by providing his clients access to the ocean using adaptive equipment and a loyal staff of volunteers, not to mention a lot of love and here in Hawaii, "Aloha".
The Aloha spirit was evident in the DVD presentation he gave us. It almost brought tears to my eyes seeing grown people, teenagers and chidren in every form: in wheelchairs, with a trach tube, catheter bag, autism, Down's Syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder - being carefully guided by trained volunteers to the shallow water of the beach or actually into the water for surfing, stand-up paddle boarding or just merely floating over the surface of the water enjoying the sunshine.
It was amazing to see a child, whose life had been crippled with inattention and fear in the chains of Autism begin to conquer, in small steps, a few waves at a time and finally to full surfing. His confidence in his ability to actually accomplish something has helped him make a positive change for the rest of his life. What a liberating feeling that must be! It sure lifted my spirits.
The co-founder is also wheel-chair bound, and he spoke of his challenges doing the thing he loved to do growing up in Hawaii: going to the beach. For some of us, the beach really is only a place of getting a tan or just going for a "dip" but for most local native Hawaiians the ocean is place of great spirituality and healing. It was heartening to see people in wheelchairs leave the confines of their metal and steel chairs to float in the ocean with big smiles on their faces.
Accessurf program has grown tremendously over the years but still can use the help of the community via donations or volunteer work. If you know someone who could utilize the services of Accessurf, or can help them out in their mission, please take a look at:
