At the time of this review, my kids are 6 and 9 (1st and 3rd grades). Both have attended the school since Kindergarten. My 6 yr old also attended Pre-K at Holy Redeemer. We were first drawn to HRS for its reputation in our neighborhood as being a welcoming school with a firm anti-bullying stance. The teachers and administration work hard to maintain a supportive learning environment where students feel welcome and wanted. What sets HRS apart from other area schools is its small class sizes, its balanced and integrated STEM curriculum, and its committment to developing the whole person. HRS students are some of the nicest kids I have ever met -- kind, excited about service opportunities, curious about their world, eager to help each other, excited about math! The teachers here are incredible educators that encourage collaboration and inspire a joyful curiousity in their students. What I love most about the school is how the teachers (due to the small class sizes and their tenure at the school) really know and look out for my kids. This personal attention has really helped my kids to thrive -- both academically and personally. I also work in a STEM field, and the administration and teachers are very open and receptive to my recommendations of activities/extra-curriculars. They have also granted me many opportunities to share my organization's work with the students - which is so fun! I felt that my concerns about racial harassment and discrimination involving children of color were not taken seriously. In my opinion, there was a lack of transparency and accountability from the administration, and I often felt that issues were minimized rather than addressed. I also felt that many staff members had close personal or family ties to the church community, which made it difficult for families outside of those circles to feel heard or supported. While the school presents itself as welcoming and student-focused, my experience was very different. I felt that promises made to our family were not honored and that tuition became the priority over the well-being of students. Based on my experience, I would encourage families--especially families of color--to ask detailed questions, pay close attention to how concerns are handled, and make sure the school's values align with their own before enrolling. It was night and day…read more Barrie teachers are professionals who stay at the school for years and years (as opposed to turnover every few months at the daycare) and who are engaged in active social-emotional, language, and literacy pedagogy. Every detail of the day seems carefully considered. The kids spend tons of time exploring nature. By learning from the teachers and talking with them about what our kids need, we became better parents.

My daughter found the course to move too fast on some areas that she had difficulty and too slow in others where she found she was wasting her time. The math teacher was not a native English speaker, and she found him to be very difficult to follow. He also lacked charisma for engaging kids on what are quite dry topics to begin with. Absolutely zero one on one time at this school. Also, there was no feedback or diagnostics from the teachers regarding tests. That is to say the course did not react to problem areas on practice tests, specifically targeting my daughter in the areas that she needed. It was basically a general study program for all, regardless of your score or weaker areas. Most definitely not worth the money. If you are already going to pay that amount, better to get a focused tutor to help on your pitfalls.

What? I get to be the first to review? Excellent!…read more Let me tell you how excited my son was to be signed up for tutoring. Answer: Not at all. And honestly, I thought it would be an argument every week going there, but no, he liked it right off the bat, to my surprise and his. The actual physical space is clean, bright and comfortable. The staff is patient - very, very patient and knowledgeable as well. They have the kids working pretty hard but they give them reasonable breaks so they can concentrate for the time they are working. The have 1 tutor working with 3 to 4 kids at a similar level so they get enough time and attention but it's not a one on one focus, which can feel like "pressure" in some ways. Some days, depending on what time we were there, it was 1 tutor with 2 children. Most often, it was 1 to 3. Tutoring is expensive so we all want measurable results and so for us, having the extensive assessment testing before and all along the way as we went along, was really helpful. Monthly progress meetings with the parents showing measurable results lets you know where your child is improving and how fast (or slow in some areas). It's just reassuring the have that measurement. They are also very, very willing to coordinate and communicate with your child's teacher or school, but I found the schools very resistant to that and I was a bit mystified. Seems like its a partnership made in heaven, but our school system was not very cooperative on that front. We had a positive experience and saw some significant improvements during the school year.
