If your dog has behavioural issues, whether it involves anxiety, barking, stress or whatever else,…read moreCardiff Canine Citizens works with dogs and their owners to resolve problems. Caroline Cowan is the dog behaviourist / psychologist behind the company, offering both group training classes working towards the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme (KCGCDS) Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, and one-to-one consultations and training sessions. She's owned many rescue dogs of different breeds and crosses, and currently has several including a Bullmastiff, Rottweiler cross, Skye Terrier cross, and a another mix of Doberman, Dogue de Bordeaux and American Bulldog! She seems to specialise in working with challenging breeds and has even appeared on TV and radio as a behavioural expert. She's well-qualified, and works as a local authority dog warden in addition to her training and behavioural work, which covers Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan. Her private behavioural consultations don't come cheap, however, but you're paying for her many years of experience: within 10 miles of central Cardiff it costs £95 for a two hour session.

When I left home, my pets all stayed with my mum. It's their home and they're happy there so I…read morewould never dream of uprooting them and bringing them to Cardiff. Still, I miss them all like crazy and none of the places I've lived in here allow pets so there's this huge animal-shaped hole in my life. Pets at Home provides some relief from this. Firstly, and most obviously, I get to go and enjoy the cute animals they have there. My favourites are the guinea pigs and the Roborovski hamsters, and I can quite easily spend a good hour in there debating whether my landlord would notice if I bought one. I am eternally disappointed that there are no mice here, but any cute animals will amuse me well enough. Secondly, since I miss my cats and dog so much, and feel pretty bad for abandoning them, I regularly pop in to buy them treats and toys to take home with me. The range of beds is particularly good, which is handy when you have a dog as destructive as mine. This branch also has a Companion Care Vetinary Centre (02920 232 957).

I'm a sucker for pet shops, and I particularly love this chain of pet supermarkets. Although you…read morecan often pick up bits and bobs at little independent pet shops, when you need several things it's often easier to head straight to Pets at Home. My only complaint is that this branch (perhaps it's the same at all Pets at Home branches?) don't sell the dog food I buy (Harrington's), so I still have to pick that up elsewhere. For pick 'n' mix dog treats, squeaky toys, and accessories such as shampoo, bowls, leads and collars, however, Pets at Home has far more choice than most smaller pet shops. The staff all seem real animal-lovers, and if you take your dog in with you they often ask if they can give it a treat or two. Just be prepared for your dog to get into a right frenzy over all the food smells luring them from aisle to aisle - oh, and watch them if you go near the rabbit and guinea pig enclosures!

Before setting up her business, she took in various pets for friends, family and neighbours when they went on holiday, and volunteered at The Cinnamon Trust which involved walking dogs in Cardiff as well as pet sitting cats. She set up Pets Go Walkies to offer people an alternative to traditional kennels and catteries, which many pets find stressful, and to offer a dog walking service to owners working full days and needing someone to drop in to exercise their pet. Kari is obviously interested in animal behaviour and training, and even has some helpful resources on her website to help pet owners with training and socialisation. She can usually cover the following areas: Splott, Adamsdown, Tremorfa, Pengam Green, Roath, Penylan, Trowbridge, Llanrumney, Rumney, St Mellons, Pentwyn, Llanederyn, Cyncoed, Cathays, Gabalfa, Maindy, Blackweir, Heath, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Canton, Victoria Park, Fairwater, Llandaff, Pontcanna, Blackwater, Whitchurch, Grangetown, Riverside, Butetown, Cardiff Bay and Penarth.

My first was a fish named Flipper who lived for 10 years, which isn't bad for a goldfish. I also grew up with rabbits, 2 tortoises, budgies, hamsters and guinea pigs and we also inherited my grandma's toy poodle, Pim, who was rather misbehaved but lots of fun to be with for an 8 year old.' She's had many pets since then, including cats Monty and Sox. Kari has spent time studying the care of dogs, cats and small pets, pet first aid and dog training techniques as well as dog and cat behaviour. She wants to give your pets a happier time, whether offering dog walking services while you are working late on that project, or pet sitting while you are sunning yourself abroad. 'I knew it would be the best job ever, getting to meet & hang out with dogs & cats & other pets; what could be better?' The women is smitten with small creatures, she really is.

My friend, on the other hand, has a far higher maintenance pedigree pooch which she sends off to Clare at Shampooch Groomers in Whitchurch fairly regularly. They'll pick up your dog in their adapted van, and their services are council approved. They are well equipped with a workshop space fitted out specifically for the purpose of dog grooming, and they also offer doggie day care and longer home boarding for when owners go on holiday. They can groom to breed standards (for those, unlike me, who have pedigrees) and to your own preferences (for example some people prefer their dogs to keep their feathering, whilst others prefer to remove it to prevent matting!). It costs my friend about £26 for her dog to be bathed, brushed, clipped and have her nails trimmed, and she's always been very happy with the results.

Misinformation is constantly given, random payments (whereby the amounts differ everytime) are…read moredemanded upfront before they will even book you in for an appointment, they call it a deposit yet they are taking the full amount for some things... That's not a deposit... Extra charges appear out of nowhere whenever treatment has been completed, they manage insurance claims in their own bizarre way (they will only take the full payment upfront and whether you decide to process the insurance claim yourself or whether you request the branch to do this for you via the Pawtal, you STILL have to pay £16 admin fee!? When you ask for clarity as to why this is the case, they tell you you either pay the £16 or you won't get what you need for the insurance claim!) They have a total lack of professionalism generally and minimum customer care is shown from a few of their staff, one in particular is based on reception, whom I won't name to offer her some level of dignity (which is less than she deserves after the altercation we had to endure last week!), seems to think it is acceptable to swear at customers, make accusations about their personal financial situation (which are completely inaccurate), hang up on them multiple times, lie about their own behaviour when called out on it, lie about their professional misconduct, then proceed to add falsified notes to client records as some form of revenge (lol) , which is both childish, laughable, bitter, and testament to their true character. Complaints and client feedback is shunned and point blank dismissed, the Practice Manager is misogynistic and passive aggressive (again, I will allow him to maintain some dignity and hold off on sharing the screenshots of the emails he has sent me), and his general demeanor explains exactly why the practice and some of it's staff are so toxic, and why things have gone down hill so much in the past year. This branch is nothing but money motivated these days (they demanded I pay £16 for the Practice Manager's signature on an insurance claims form that they didn't have to do any admin for!? To which I confirmed that I would rather take the hit of the £90 already paid to the Practice than pay them another penny after the way they have treated us as of late). They seem to have adopted a total disregard for what really matters here... the care of the animal. They are incapable of following simple instructions, they seem to make it up as they go along! Incompetence, lack of empathy, self serving, disorganised, out of touch with common decency. Also, there is a question mark over the amount of things they are allowing their nursing staff/junior staff to do e.g vaccinations, as they seem to leave the room to do these things, which they didn't do before (we have been at this practice for 5 ish years) . Good luck if you are a client here or if you are thinking of becoming a client here! We have now moved practices, as we no longer entrust Vets for Pets Newport with the care of our animals at all!

The knowledgeable gentleman at Aquatic House kindly explained to me that it would cost around £160 to get my new pet all kitted out, which has sort of put me off, but I admit this seems like a reasonable rate (however, it makes me yearn for an outdoor pond that my £15 terrapin could call home) If you're not a reptile enthusiast, Aquatic House has every marine and tropical fish you can imagine, even those cute little ones that look like Nemo (clown fish, I think?). By way of saying thank you for her friendly advice, I bought a few treats for my dog - since I hadn't even bought my fish from her. The shop is long and thin, and not particularly big, but they cover most of the basics for cats, hamsters, dogs, rabbits, and most other popular pets - with loads of aquarium-related stuff in stock - and she has her own little dog sat with her behind the counter!
