No matter how many last minute changes I asked him to do (with literally not much time at all to get it done) he did so with a smile. He never complained and if we had annoyed him (which any sane person would have been) he never showed it. I can not thank him enough for the relentless days and nights he spent to make our dream come true! Most late nights, he worked by himself knowing his crew had families they needed to get home to. He and his wife never made us feel anything less than equals/friends. I never actually met his wife, but if Josh was unable to get to his phone if we called, she had no problem with us having their house number so she could relay messages for us. I didn't even realize how much their family was/had gone through until after Josh finished our dream and we were gloating to owners of a nearby store. Who happened to know Josh and his wife's story. The love that family has for each other even after how much his poor wife had gone through, just proves my point, Josh would bend over backwards for anyone he cared for. His wife is strong and even after we found out what she had gone through, never once complained about him working late. It is not my place to go into details but, if you haven't already had the pleasure of meeting this man., ask around. I'm sure someone will tell you their family is pure love and his work shows it! Not to mention, a couple very happy kiddos they have. So thank you Josh and Kaitlyn Spencer for making us feel like family. We will forever be grateful for what you did for us!

Val was also really confrontational by sending rude text messages saying "I'm not paying for your house" and such, when we gave him money whenever he asked. The kitchen cabinets also have gaps and are crooked (very poor workmanship), and the front doorknob fell off a couple weeks after he put it on. The insulation he put in the basement is falling out and falling on the floor. Val and his son did REALLY POOR QUALITY work and then tried to say that's how it's supposed to be. According to Val AND his son you should buy brand new kitchen cabinets with big gaps and put on crooked (maybe they need new glasses. Val will threaten to sue you if you complain about his work. HAVE VAL (short bald guy) SIGN A WRITTEN CONTRACT AGREEING TO MATERIALS AND EXACT WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE! HE WILL TELL YOU HE WILL PUT SOMETHING IN (hard wood doors, or change The layout) but he'll just put in cheap doors and say "I never said that". He is never welcome here again and I'm reporting him to the BBB.

He and the crew gave me a full price estimate and timeline on the project, asking for half the money as a deposit, also to be used for supplies with the other half due at completion. It took me a few weeks to obtain the building permit required for my porch. He kept in contact with me through that process to ensure we were on the same page and he could start as soon as I got everything in order. Brandon and the guys arranged to start on a day that worked for me, starting at around 9am to sunset everyday until both projects were done. They were profession and courteous through the whole job, only leaving behind sawdust in the grass. Great group of guys. I later had them come back to replace an 8x12 section of subfloor, main door to the house and floor tiles for the kitchen/entry way. Same experience as the first job. I have them scheduled again for this spring to renovate two bathrooms and replace some windows. Apex Construction is one of the best representations of a Maine local business I've seen in a long time. You'll end up keeping their phone number in your contacts for your next construction project, for sure. In light of this company's prior ratings I followed up to research Brandons interactions with the Pro team at a well known home improvement retailer in Augusta and in the end found nothing inconsistent with his introductory remarks that he made to me during an hour long interview in reference to the more complicated project as mentioned above. I am frankly nonplussed by his negative reviews but will proceed in screening for two additional outside bids.

The first was a house built in…read more1980 and the second, which Buckley Builders is working on now, is a 223-year-old brick house with a 130-year-old addition for barn and stable. We were newcomers to Maine and were looking on the Better Business Bureau website for AAA rated contractors. Like the other contractors, Buckley Builders had a wait time. But we needed to have a 40-year-old broken and unreparable stove with a separate cooktop removed and replaced, which meant cutting counters, closing up a window and creating a vent system for the new oven. Not a tiny job. Shawn Buckley took pity on us and made the time to get our new stove installed, because, as he said, you can't really move into a house unless you can cook in it. The company have done really excellent work on both houses, for all their differences in age and condition. Particularly with the current house, they have turned the somewhat unstable barn structure into a rock-solid waterproof ground-level bedroom with bathroom and closets. This has involved shoring up the foundations, strengthening the roof and walls, demolishing a section that was more or less rotten, and a lot more. Shawn, Joe, and Pete Buckley are very sensitive to the style of the buildings they work on and we have relied on their judgment throughout, with no regrets. They have done a beautiful job on trimwork and siding, installing skylights, and building decks. In the newer house, among other things, they excavated and concreted the basement to augment the radon protection and to make it a more usable space. Buckley Builders use plumbers and electricians they have worked with for years and whose work is also excellent. The entire team are friendly, polite, and very attentive to the needs and desires of their clients. They have also been extremely tolerant and kind to our four animals, who haven't always been kind and tolerant back. We are happy to recommend Buckley Builders unreservedly.

Shawn Buckley of Buckley Builders gave me a start date for my project of March 2022. He began 8 months later, at the end of November 2022. Because of this, I incurred the cost of supporting 2 households for those months, to the tune of $12,000. During my project, Shawn continually asked for up-front funds for time and materials, without supplying invoices for the completed work. After 3 months, I finally convinced him to send me invoices. Shawn continually asked for money, until I finally told him that I would have to find an alternate way, to pay him. Shawn continually accused me of owing him money. He walked off the project in May. Comparing Shawn's invoices to my payments - with bank proof of all checks written out to, and signed by Shawn - Shawn owes me $21,203.04. Again, Shawn accused me of owing him money... Somehow, he couldn't "find" 2 of my checks, totaling $25,000 in his bank account. After a long wait on my part, and being confronted with real numbers, Shawn "found" the missing checks. Today, 4 weeks after Shawn walked away from my project; The house has no floors. The kitchen has no cupboards. None of the appliances have been hooked-up. The front door has no handle, the steps to the 2nd floor have no treads, and the sink and toilet have not been installed in the 1st-floor bath. Invoices from Shawn total $110,796.96. I have paid him $132,000. Shawn owes me $21,203.04 in labor and materials. If I add the cost of the March - November 2022 and May - June 2023 (10 months of delays or $15,000 in additional living expenses) into the mix, Shawn owes me $36,203.04 in labor, materials and living expenses.
