Nalu was previously owned by someone else, very friendly; enjoyed going in there. They've since relocated a few times around town. I looked forward to going in there (and spending money). Again, my latest experience with this woman was so terribly uncomfortable and blatantly aggressive upon just entering the shop, I immediately said to myself I can't possibly give her my business. I said hello and very bubbly tried to converse with her (as she was the only person in there) I commented on their new location and she snapped back immediately as if in attempt to embarrass me, "we've only moved twice" then went on to speak to me as if a 1st grader, slowly describing each previous shop location. She kept repeating "Two" "we've only moved TWICE" "that's only two moves". I stopped smiling, looked down and didn't say anything more. She then laughed and said something else about how it was only two moves. It was appalling and awkward. Instead of engaging in such barbaric banter and even acknowledging her lack of professionalism, I just graciously said thank you very much, and left. I will not be returning and certainly never purchasing from there ever again. Which is a shame considering it was one of my all time favorite shops. To make matters worse, while walking out of her shop, she very facetiously, condescendingly and mockingly said "bye, thanks for coming in, have a good day". She will be terribly disappointed in her poor attitude towards customers and having pushed them out like this when she is in need of that incoming revenue to keep her business alive. And if she is not the owner, I hope she is replaced fast.

When a gift gallery is impeccably curated, there is no reason to "shop around."…read more G.S. Hill Gallery on Nantucket is just that. With a perfect selection of jewelry (mainly pearls), glass, china, hand carved wood pieces, paintings and of course, Nantucket baskets, you will surely find many gifts for the ones you love and one for yourself. The owner is lovely. Having recently celebrated 30 years in business, she understands her clientele and doesn't need to play the "hard sell" game. Her pieces are absolutely stunning and truly sell themselves. On my recent trip, I purchased the new "must have" freshwater pearl and leather bracelet by designer Pam Freitus. Each pearl is chosen by Freitus, each bracelet made by hand. Despite their immense popularity, the prices are still "gentle." Depending on pearl size and closure, you can spend as little as $40. Customized pieces are available, all correspondence can go through the gallery. Gentlemen: Trust me here. The woman in your life will be thrilled if you visit G.S. Hill. Give the owner your budget and describe who the gift is for. You will be a gift-giving superstar! NOTE: There is a great selection of pieces made with irregular pearls. I personally find the irregulars have a bit more personality and style than their perfect counterparts, and you know what? They are a lot less expensive. If you're looking for a little something to bring back to Mom, go with their recycled hand-pressed sun-catchers. Small sun-catchers are $9 with the large being $22. The traditional Nantucket baskets come in range of prices, but no matter where you go on the island, you'll spend a small fortune. If you're going to make the investment, I recommend G.S. Hill. The quality of her goods and the entire shopping experience is worth it.

I very seldom post negative reviews but sometimes they are just really warranted…read more I must confess the experience I had at Jewel in the Sea in the summer of '24 soured me on this store. In fact, so bad was my experience it still bothers us more than a year later and I opted to Yelp about it. Prior to '24 I've bought sterling Nantucket basket bracelets for all my daughters and bride, without any incident at this store. Summer of '24: Milling about Town, we went into the Jewel in the Sea. Working the store counter was a young African American woman who was pre-occupied with her laptop. There was no one else in the store, just my bride and me. Walking through the store, I spy a knock-off, Swatch-esque, wristwatch. I collect wristwatches, so I asked her how much this one was. She proceeded to bark at me that she was busy and told me to wait. So much for that gracious Nantucket customer service; the poor little princess from Manhattan College. Now, I never talk down to people like she did to me, and there was really no reason for her to do so; it was a gesture of power and control. After waiting about eight minutes, I picked up the watch to read the price tag. She then started to yell at me, implying that I was trying to steal it. Please note, the wristwatch was not locked up or under glass. Maybe this store is great, maybe their merchandise is nice, and the prices are reasonable. However, the help they employed in '24, at least the day we visited, was downright exceptionally rude. I was even more surprised to read that Nantucket Today rated this store as 'the best' on the island! IMHO, Nantucket Today's judgement is lacking. Plenty of other jewelry stores on the island and in Town.

The women working in this shop were about as unwelcoming as you can get in retail. Judging by the way they looked at my husband and me when we walked in, you would have thought we'd entered covered in the whale blubber the island used to be known for! We were the only shoppers in the store, yet not one of the three women I saw working made a significant attempt at being pleasant or helpful. The entire time we were there, the two blond women just watched us browse. Although they trailed slowly behind us, they did not act at all interested in our patronage...with one mediocre exception: one of the women half-heartedly told me about some of the shoes they carried when she saw me pause to look at them. But no one asked if we were looking for anything special or even asked if we were visitors to the island. We were asked the latter in every single shop and restaurant we visited subsequent to this one. No, it's not mandatory, but it sure is indicative of good customer service. The best part of the experience was when I asked one of the blond women about a particular designer that I thought I'd read they carried and the dark-haired woman who was standing behind the counter inserted herself into the conversation to snap at me the name of a different designer they carried. She said it twice, with the nastiest tone to her voice, all the while looking at something on the counter, as if she couldn't even be bothered. My husband and I left as soon as she stopped talking. This boutique was the first establishment we'd visited on the island, as we had only arrived an hour or so beforehand and the boutique was very close to our hotel. Apart from the staff at our hotel, we had not encountered any locals, and these women, with their noses in the air, made the worst first impression of the island I could have imagined. Too bad. If you've plans to visit Nantucket and want to do any luxury shopping, may I suggest another boutique? The labels and aesthetic are far superior at Olivela than at Serenella. The two women working at Olivela when I visited (Saturday, June 1) were absolutely delightful. In fact, they were so pleasant, welcoming, and helpful, the associates in Serenella could take a master class from them. I was glad to spend my money with OLIVELA, as they treated me like they valued my business. Also, a portion of the proceeds from each purchase at Olivela is donated to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital!
