WO had by far the best food of any place we visited. They moved from their home in Kingson to Washington Oaks together for the first two months. The staff - every one of them!!!, is kind and aware of the needs of the residents. Mom can walk long safe distances with their sky bridges. Physical therapy and Exercise class is on-site. As a result, she keeps strong and keeps walking despite a severe bilateral disability in her muscles. I am confident being here because assisted care is available should she need it. More importantly, my Mom was impressed enough to sell her home in New Mexico and move to Washington Oakes, which is right in our neighborhood. Everyone you meet, staff and residents alike, are friendly and really seem to like it there. Many staff have been there a long time, which tells me the management puts as much emphasis on caring for their staff as they do their residents. The building itself is a wonderfully remodeled, historic school, truly a beautiful structure. The feeling it is cold, and everything is a clean. Only as a last resort should this facility be used. Issues:…read moreThe patient arrived on a Friday. We weren't allowed to speak with him for 1.75 days. Finally, when visited on the 3rd day, the patient didn't have a call button available at his bed until a friend went to visit and insisted on it being provided. This was called out to the director the day prior, but she insisted there was a call button at his bed! At breaks, sometimes the pager was locked in the meds cart with no one attending to patient requests for help. Patient was asked to yell to get help, but his room was adjacent to the laundry and the noise from the commercial laundry exceeded the patient's voice. Additionally, someone would close the room door, so no one would hear him. A patient shouldn't have to beat on the wall to get help. Patient has repeat issues with UTI, but facility wouldn't submit a sample to the lab until 2 days after the request. He unnecessarily was under duress and pain due to their lack of willingness to submit a sample to the lab. When interviewing AFH's to have patient transferred out, the facility portrayed the worst possible and most difficult scenario so they could keep their bed filled. Thank goodness, a wonderful AFH went to interview the patient to see he was fine for themselves. Lastly, because the patient's finances were in transition and there was a delay in paying the co-pay due to the facility, the facility director reported the patient's advocate for financial fraud to insure they'd get paid. The police and adult protective services were involved. This was very unfortunate and unnecessary, especially because the facility was kept informed as to timing for payment and it was completed in a reasonable amount of time. It's alarming to have "professionals" be so unhelpful and divisive while caring for such a vulnerable patients. The director and staffed lacked timely responsiveness, helpfulness, attentiveness not only to the patient, but to all involved. Hostility and untruthfulness were also issues. The patient felt he could've easily died under their care. It's better not to send someone here. He's doing much better at the AFH where he now resides.

Subsequently, we found our she had fairly advanced terminal cancer. The level of care and kindness shown by the entire staff (thanks, Kelly, Nedra, Michael) really touched our hearts. It's not the fanciest place I've seen, but the kindness, love and level of care mean that your loved one will be well taken care of. Our mom ended up in hospice, and eventually passed away in January, 2020. Throughout her suffering and our grief, the staff was kind, supportive and always helpful. They took most excellent care of her, both physically and emotionally. Thanks to all of you.

Come see for yourself. I as well as the whole staff at The Cottages take pride in the care that we offer here. I am also happy to add that every year we are visited by the state who survey's everything from the way we dust and water plants, to water temps, food menus, etc. We have had stellar scores with the state and our residents are happy, safe, and secure. While there is ALWAYS room for improvement I'm very proud of our community and the care we offer. My FIL went there after having his good leg amputated from diabetes. His other leg didn't work…read morefrom a stroke. They did not put him on a diabetic diet. When he rings bell no one comes. He needs help getting on the toilet and they refuse to help him, they shove a bed pan under him because it's easier. Then they forget him and he lays on bedpan for hours. He is there for rehab. Helping him get to toilet would help his rehab. He called us in the middle of the night and in the morning wanting to know where he is and why. My husband explained 4 times. It's clear to us he had a TIA or a mini stroke. We voiced concerns and they just sort of shrugged and said his vital signs are normal. My husband came home all emotional because his Dad's care is so awful. The food is awful. They are short staffed, and the place isn't that clean. His oxygen tube was laying on floor and they put it in his nose. He also got a sore on his left foot and they did nothing and it's possible he may lose his left leg if it doesn't heal. We moved him to Manor Care. Please do not take your love ones here. The care is really sub par.
