This Mexican spot is a must go to. They are open until 4am. We picked up my nephew from the airport and stopped at a location nearby. My cousins ordered Diablo burrito and I ordered the birria. Ever since the restaurant changed ownership, the quality of their steak has been TERRIBLE! Every time I've been there, the steak was inedible as it was ALL pure fat. I complained about this the last time I went. Although, it had a few good pieces it was still way below par. They're being greedy as they give you less meat, give you all the fat that's normally separated, charge for a single sauce, and I should have demanded a refund as the 'carne asada fries' or 'Super Fries' is over $13. Holy Guacamole! Stopped into Abelardo' s for lunch with the wife. Good location close to the state office buildings where I work. Inside is decent with a good cafe feel. The flow is order, sit down, get your food, eat and get back to work. The food is pretty good with great prices. This time I decided to get a taco salad because my wife likes it. First impression was they did not skimp on the toppings at all. There was a generous amount of sour cream, cheese and guacamole. If that wasn't enough they have a mini bar next to the register loaded with different salsas of varying heat and more guacamole in case the half cup originally provided wasn't enough. The salad was pretty tasty I could definately tell all the ingredients were fresh, and the meat was cooked recently. Not the most amazing Mexican I've had, but for only five dollars I left very satisfide. I would recommend Abelardo' s to those who need good tasting Mexican quick that's not fast food and won't cost too much. The ingredients are fresh and everything's made to order. You can dress your food in a variety of different sauces to you're liking, and from what I've tried all are very appetizing. I couldn't find anything to complain about other than the little bit if waiting time for my food. If course this is understandable as they make it to order each time. So if you stop for a quick lunch make sure you've alloted yourself enough time to wait about 5-10 minutes for your order and give enough time to eat and get back to work. Ive come here on many occasions, mostely for their jalapeno poppers, but sometimes they are on the menu and other times they are not. In my opinion, a consistent menu is very important for a restaurant. Ive never really had big complaints from this place but on my recent visit they did not get any of my order right, the torillas fell apart before eating my tacos and the rice and beans where thrown over my tacos in my togo order. First time getting food at this establishment. The Queso dip was not in my delivery (doordash). When I called and spoke to the "manager" he dated he checked my order twice. Meant nothing because the Queso was not in my delivery. He offered double Queso on my next order. They offered I could pick it. I explained it defeated the purpose of delivery. Amazing, fast, and super casual Mexican cuisine. The styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery are fairly unassuming, but once you dig into the food you'll see why they're such a strong presence in the Des Moines area. You get a great deal on food, plenty of content for the price you pay. It isn't anything too out of the ordinary, but they make some classic combos and make them very well. I'm appalled at the lack of customer service and professionalism that was displayed at their E 14th location. I ordered 10 tacos an hour in advance to be picked up at a certain time, but when I got their they hadn't even started my order therefore making me late to the dinner I was supposed to drop off. They only gave me 8 tacos so I went back to get the additional 2 tacos I paid for, but they told me I wasn't able to get them unless I brought the box back, because they couldn't know if "I was lying or not." So I go here all the time and always have great service. Sometimes you have to wait for a little bit but the food is totally worth it. What has inspired my review tonight though is their tamales! I asked the woman working if they were made their and she told me yes. I ended up trying one and let me just say they are the best tamales I've had in Des Moines and I've lived in Arizona.
