I had the opportunity to be an audience member for Windy City Live. The entire process was seamless. Two days before I received confirmation and the day before a QR code. On the day of the show we lined up outside for a few minutes and quickly and efficiently went through the security process. We were seated quickly . The show was 30 minutes and went by so quickly. After the recording Val Warner and Terell Brown stayed for pictures with each audience member. I T was a fun experience and is always interesting to watch a TV show in progress. read more

Dragging my husband to a taping of The View on our honeymoon turned out to be fun for both of us. Everything is streamlined, and the waiting area we sat in was equipped with Starbucks and complimentary juice from ABC. It's very cool to see the show behind the scenes, and their warm-up comedian is perfect for her job. Well, maybe I am just of a generation, but the vulgar, offensive language, that I have come to expect on cable, is now on primetime. Last evening, while watching the Clemson vs Virginia Tech football game, the first half ended with my jaw dropping and I changed the channel. I suggest those from the control room review your tapes so that you, too, can enjoy the comment that some "young lady" shouted. At the end of the first half, just after the final play was reviewed and the referee was announcing his ruling, the F * * K YOU A * * H *LE was clearly audible. Not a comment I wanted to hear. Since I refused to watch the rest of the game, I don't know is Ms. Manners continued her commentary, but you lost this viewer. I wish I knew how to contact the network because I think is is against network broadcasting rules ~ common sense, too. I had a really fun time here For the Live taping of Windy City Live. The whole process was pretty painless. You can get free tickets for the show at https://1iota.com/Show/388/Windy-City-LIVE. Once there you check in and wait about an hour before the show begins. The hour passes by fairly quickly taking pics and we snuck out for a bite to eat across the street. I LOVE the set of Windy City Live! It's so bright and colorful it puts you in a good mood. The audience seating is pretty intimate. I believe at most 80 ppl fit. I actually was at ABC Studios because I was attending a live studio taping of Windy City Live The show actually tapes at about 1 but they have you for in line beginning at about 11:30 but you stand outside I stood for at least 30 minutes they take you inside of the building where you will wait more and get a number and actually step inside the building when you can hang up your coat and you wait some more so about 15 minutes before 1pm and go inside it's predetermined where you going to sit I lucked out and actually had a great seat The set itself is pretty small and it's multi-purpose or they kind of turn to the side or step up a step 4 different interactions or different segments of the show but it's a really intimate soundstage or you're really close we had a really funny guy who was directing us Director on set prompted us in applause in the oooh and aaaahhs what to do on camera and what not to do who really was honest about crowd participation the host Val she was very hospitable she was very nice and happy and pleasant the other two were pretty nice and engaging as well it was actually three separate things on the show that we got to see and I honestly don't see how they fit all those things in an hour it was makeup segment it was Hot Topics segment they had the lady from Sweetie Pie's I believe her name is Ruby it was just a jam-packed show but I enjoyed it and I also walked away with a free t-shirt a book by the author they also had an author there who had like a mentoring program a real rag to riches story After they were done with the makeup segment we also got one of the products to take home with us so that was pretty awesome and after the show The Host allow you to take photos and selfies with them and they also posted them on their way Windy City Live Instagram page read more

The reporter during her broadcast states the final result of a basketball game between Notre Dame and Wake Forest. She states N.D. won. They didn't!!!!! I am very upset today with ABC Channel 7, and it's programming. Today's INDYCAR Grand Prix scheduled to air at 4:00 (The actual race began earlier at 2:30). I accidentally found the race being televised earlier because of a rain delay of the Cubs/Sox game. During the rain delay ABC was running other programming, whatever made them decide to air the race before its scheduled time, they only know. Even though missing 20 or so laps of the race, I settled in to watch it, as it is a great warmup for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500. Just as the race gets interesting, teams are setting up their pit and tire strategies at the mid point of the race, ABC Chicago decides to break away from the race and air the already delayed baseball game. It is only too tempting to write a paragraph or two with the adjectives I am thinking to describe how upset I am with how ABC has handled the airing of the race. I could also write something very unflattering of where I believed their heads were when they made their programming decision. However if their heads were, where I believed them to be, it would render them useless and unable to read my comments and review. read more

ABC 7 posted a status on Facebook about a week ago inviting their fans to a live taping of Windy City Live and a studio tour. I was lucky enough to be online at the time it was posted, so I emailed right them right away requesting tickets. I received an email the next day confirming that i was in. I've been to a taping of Jimmy Kimmel before and I was an extra on One Tree Hill, so I'm not new to the TV taping game, but I've never done a TV studio tour before. Our confirmation was strict about entry time and what to wear, so we showed up at 9:10 AM for our 11 AM taping. I'm glad we did because my mom and I ended up being #12 and #13 in line. I thought we'd spend a lot of time waiting outside, but they were really quick to get us inside since it was so hot out. We first had to go through the security gate and sign consent forms. All of the individuals we encountered during this process were extra friendly. My mom is one of those people that likes to tell everyone her life story and they all smiled and listened even though they had other things to do. The waiting process was painless as there were plenty of chairs in the hall to sit at. After all of the audience was checked in, we were called into the studio for the taping. The taping was a blast and went really fast. After the taping, we were given a Subway box lunch and waited until it was our time to do the FUN part -- the tour of the newsroom. Once we finally got the tour, we were surprised at how small the news studio was. We got to meet the VP of programming (can't remember his name) but he was hilarious and made us feel welcomed. We got to meet Linda Yu, Mike Kaplan and Alan Krashesky. Tracy Butler also popped in for a minute, but must have had work to do because she didn't stay long. I don't know whether the anchors are all really good actors or if they were genuinely happy to meet us, but they were all extremely personable and posed for tons of pictures with all 70-100 of us. My favorite part of the tour was sitting at the weather desk and taking pictures in front of the green screen. They mentioned they are going to do a similar tour/taping in September this year, so I highly recommend trying to go if you get the chance. Having dated someone from this station, it amuses me to no end that I'm reviewing this place on Yelp. When I graduated from college, ABC was in the middle of completing their State Street studio - obviously a move to compete with NBC (WMAQ) over on Michigan Avenue. Now, the studio is open and functional (and has been for a few months). On my trip back to Chicago last week, I was wandering down State Street (in search for a new handbag) and I saw a bunch of people gathered around the studios - it was time for the 5pm news! Now this is one of those shiny objects that you find very hard to walk by without stopping - especially when they're actually doing the news. But I refused to do it! I will not be drawn in by your bright lights and shiny robotic cameras!...ok maybe I could stop to watch one segment. Yea, I guess I don't have to leave RIGHT now...I can stay to watch the weather...wait, we're almost to the end of the show? There's no harm in staying until then...oh look, I'm on TV! Now, while I maintain that I was watching for research purposes (Being a TV grad student, myself)...I did enjoy myself for the most part. The green screen for the weather reports comes down right in front of the audience -- which prompted a few people to think that the news was over and they left. I'm not sure if this was a purposeful placement, but it was confusing and then sort of annoying. I know this isn't ABC's issue, but since there are people stationary for a certain amount of time, homeless men take this opportunity to work their "magic" (or whatever). I don't think ABC can do anything about that issue (as the sidewalk is public property, etc, etc), but it's a little unnerving to try to watch the news and the guy next to you is spitting on the ground and talking to himself. I also know that Chicago has to have some sort of Noise Ordinance or something, but I wish that the news they pipe outside would be a little louder. There seems to be only one speaker, which is above the TV they've swiveled around for passers-by to watch the news on. And if you want to be on TV, you'll be waiting the full half hour. They don't pan out onto State Street until it's over. And the anchors don't look out and wave until the end of the broadcast either -- but that's something I totally understand. If I were in their place, I'd have to pretend there aren't 15 or so people pressed against the glass (like a kid at a fish tank) watching me just to get through the broadcast. read more

I am a faithful viewer of ABC news. I am disturbed when I hear reporters stating that a victim of gun violence is "expected to be okay". These people will never be "okay" they have suffered significant trauma both physically and mentally. They will constantly be reminded of the horrific insult to them and in many cases unexpected or innocent bystanders. Please find a better way to state that they have survived trauma and wish them the best in their recovery which will be a long process. read more

This station has gone seriously downhill in the past few years. And boring Ron Magers being replaced hasn't helped. It's like nobody with a brain is running the place. Just mindless drivel directed top the lowest possible level of viewer intelligence. So what's wrong? They have kissed off any semblance of objectivity in their news reading and have become a flagrant outlet for the left-wing propaganda script, boosting the left-wing agenda. They are not even subtle about it any more. On Thursday, June 14, 2016 Kathy Brock, the dried up old newsreader, went so far as to explicitly describe Donald Trump's statements as "outrageous." That for me was the tipping point. Irrespective of one's opinion about Trump, such mindless name-calling is not appropriate even for the editorial pages and is certainly not professional journalism. Makes you wonder who actually writes their scripts. They have trained and programmed their female news readers to purr like kittens. Just listen to the soothing purr as their voices drop, displaying their inner cougar. This is recent and unique for just this station. Combined with the Happy Talk script they read, they sound ridiculous and unbearably annoying. And they're just getting older and older, not better. And looking really scary in HD. They fired long-time, respected, professional weather man Mike Caplan to bring in an air-headed pretty face from NBC. (Mike is now at Fox 32 Chicago. So is Rafer Weigel, son of legendary sportscaster Tim. The Woman they hired to cover sports is especially annoying, grating, like chalk screeching on a blackboard. Tonight, they interrupted the scheduled program - one of the limited number that are not reruns during the summer - with two of their weathermen yammering endlessly about a possible tornado - near Pontiac, which far south and is not even in the Chicago viewing area. It went on for over 55 minutes - until the 10:00pm news started and they continued their rambling! That is way past the point of unbearable pain for viewers. They probably spent too much money on their fancy new radar plaything and have to justify it somehow. Nationally, are there any ABC programs worth watching? Only Scandal, after the New York Brain Trust canceled Castle. ABC just reinforces what everyone is saying, that there's nothing worth watching on TV now. I will just get my news and weather from the internet. At least there I don't have to suffer 55 minutes of the weather in Pontiac and Dwight. Update: Thursday, July 28, 2016 was weatherman Jerry Taft's last broadcast on the 10:00pm news. He is being replaced by Wanda The Weather Bunny. He was the only reason that program was worth watching. I had the bad feeling he was being phased out when Wanda was lured away from NBC and Mike Caplan was fired. Will now be watching Fox instead. More professional and unbiased, better for grown-ups who think. Update Friday, May 25, 2018: It just gets worse and worse. Jerry Taft has retired (Best Wishes to him on a fine career. We miss you.) Scandal has ended. Then their sports-reader Mark Giangreco tweeted one Sunday calling President Donald Trump a "cartoon lunatic" and referred to Trump voters as "simpletons." The station mis-management only gave him a two-week suspension, revealing their subliminal agreement. He should have been fired. But worse, the last remaining interesting program, Jeopardy!, is now being pre-empted by baseball games! There seems to be NO way to capture or DVR these missing episodes. At least in Chicago. Channel 7 features some of my favorite Chicago news personalities. Lest you be fooled into thinking that the 10:00pm newscast is their flagship broadcast, might I humbly suggest that you tune your TiVo each weekday morning to witness the train wreck that is the 11:00am news? Veteran anchors Sylvia Perez and Linda Yu anchor my favorite hour of television since The Wire went off the air. Linda's hair is a masterpiece each and every day, and Sylvia's multifarious contributions to the broadcast are too numerous to mention. Sylvia and Linda are joined daily by Tracy Butler, the foodphobic meteorologist who cannot bear to watch someone get a shot at the doctors office. Tracy's favorite food is grilled cheese and crab legs. She once ate 50 snow crab legs in one sitting. If that is not a sign of someone on the verge of a nervous breakdown, I don't know what is. Food journalist Steve Dolinsky visits on Wednesday and Friday, and he usually brings a smorgasbord from whatever restaurant he happens to be featuring that day. Linda and Sylvia pig out while Steve explains everything. It's particularly entertaining to watch Linda try to stuff large things into her mouth, so look out for episodes about burgers. (Tracy only gets involved in Steve's segments on her birthday, where they explore white food. Next year, Tracy will sample mashed potatoes.) Each episode is rounded out by a local interest feature segment for which this 29 year old male is totally not the target demographic (proper bra fitting, swimwear fashion shows for ladies of all sizes, and salsa dance performances) and Mr. Food. The latter is the television pseudonym of an elderly gentleman that demonstrates recipes that can be made solely of items from the old generic aisle at Jewel. Mr. Food's segment always cuts away to Tracy Butler, and her reactions to his concoctions are frequently priceless. For those of you who have jobs or lives that render you unable to watch the late morning newscast, a bit of fun can be had on the Friday night 10:00pm newscast. After Steve Dolinsky's Friday Night Special, keep an eye out for the frequent humiliation of lead meteorologist Jerry Taft. We are to infer that Jerry is a man with a somewhat unsophisticated palate. Tune in enough and you may hear Kathy Brock or Ron Magers chide him about how good the featured encased meat must look. If you're up late on Sunday night, you may want to tune into 190 North, Channel 7's Chicago lifestyle and entertainment show. The host, Janet Davies, must be seen to be believed. read more

The big reason that I am re-reviewing, this was the week that Alex Trebek's final 5 episodes of episodes, that he taped at the end of October, before his death on November 8th of last year. Originally these episodes were set to air the week of Christmas, with Alex Trebek's final episode set to air on Christmas Day. And then I don't know whoever made the good decision to postpone the episodes from airing due to holiday preemptions, the would have been Christmas Day, that is the big basketball day for the NBA, like Thanksgiving is the big day for NFL, as they have basketball games in the NBA scheduled to start being played throughout the day, starting with late morning/early afternoon Christmas Day, and then throughout the day into the late evening hours in the central and eastern time, with ABC showing the good many expect for what 2. So it was postponed to this past week, and Monday comes the first episodes, and then Tuesday and Wednesday there is breaking news coverage, which Wednesday Trump supporters storming the capital, in hopes of getting the election results over turned, which really to late for that as ballots were being counted. And so both Tuesday and Wednesday episodes were pre-empted for the news coverage. And then WLS TV made the decision, and announced it in a message doing Thursday's episode of Jeopardy, which was intended for Christmas Eve, that Alex made a mention of it, that there going to show both the episodes, Tuesday and Wednesday episodes, on Friday afternoon between 1 and 2 PM where normally Windy City Live would air. And okay they showed Tuesday episode, and Wednesday episode, which then they interrupt for news coverage of Joe Biden's news conference in which he taking questions for reporters. And I am watching it this morning on tv, and when they interrupted with about 9 minutes to go in the show, and I am like "what". Seriously does all this really be this episode to go live to this, instead of air the shows that were scheduled to air. I plan to watch the final episode that Ale Trebek's taped that was over the course of two days, of the 5 episodes, that the last ones, I don't know how many episodes were taped between the 2 days, that was done on October 29th. read more

1) I am a Cub's fan that is SO HAPPY that the cubs will NOT have any games on ABC next year. It is so obvious that ABC could care less about Cubs games. Every time they broadcast a game, the 2 play by play announcer (Len & J.D.) get their volume turned down so low that you would have to nearly max out the sound on your TV to hear them well - but that won't work anyway because they have the crowd noise so loud you would still not be able to hear them. And today (8/29/19) they blasted there opening music over the top of Len/J.D.'s pronouncement of the 2 team lineups. I've pretty much decided that the only way to watch the game when on ABC is turn off the sound and turn on the radio. Or is that their intention ? Does ABC hate Comcast and Cubs that much? Or is it some unsupervised intern in the broadcast truck? I would not think that after paying the $millions for the few games they get this year that ABC would do such a ZERO rating production. 2) Over the course of several week I tried to hunt down an email contact / electronic point for ABC, but apparently they don't want to hear from us. every page from ABC7Chicago to abc.com that has a "contact us" - if you click it you find yourself back at the top of their home page. And don't bother writing any letters to them - 6 to Chicago & 4 to NY asking for an explanation of why they turn the sound so low for the game announcers went unanswered. Not even a form letter. So next year when Ricketts claims all the Cubs games will be moving to the network he/ the Cubs are starting, I will hate paying his fees, but at least I will get a play by play instead of 85db of crowd noise. read more

The worst news station ever. The mgmt and news personalities all suck. The weather presentation is poor, ignorant and paranoid news personalities, don't know how to hire the right candidates for any job. They will hire anybody. I don't understand y they claim to be number 1 in all newscast. They lie about eberythi g and mixes everything up and don't how to give info. This is for the asinine interruption of the final season-Until 6 weeks from now Jeopardy! game. All because of some frivolous replacement of the Presidential chief of staff. Luckily I found out who won, From the Jeopardy! web site. And those ding dongs let ABC News interrupt with some actually unimportant trivial news story. Now, If in the event our country was attacked again, Or part of some American soil was attacked by presumably North Korea or any of our other enemies, Or if something major occured in the US or other places of some vital disaster or tragedy. Or something happened to the President in a serious or grave manner, Or to our other high ranking officials of importance. THEN I would see a very good reason to interrupt the usual programming, But NOT for something less important. And BTW, The other major network channels had ZERO news interruptions at the time when this rather frivolous story broke. What silly fools for interrupting a season ending Jeopardy!, For some story that many could care less about. And adding salt to the wound, The network dragged on the frivolous story. And I would be lax surprised if there was a busy signal at WLS-TV at the time Jeopardy! was actually unnecessarily interrupted. In this case, WLS-TV & ABC News done an absolutely good job at leaving many of the Jeopardy! viewers in suspense, Until September. read more
