Great place. Plenty of selection. Good peeps. We get our liquor there each time we need to restock.

Terribly rude manager, talks under his breath at people. Not a way to run a business, I don't care how little you're paid. Rude.

I dropped by one afternoon to check out this new pub in North Raleigh and I was delighted to find…read morehow cozy it was and how hospitable and sweet the owners, Kevin and Stephanie, are. The decor in The Winchester Pub is unique in the fact that they don't have all the stereotypical, tacky beer signage that others have and the bar is completely handmade by Kevin himself (it's gorgeous). Their selection of beers on tap is primo -- you won't see any of the over-served blah beers of other bars. Instead, you'll find a finely curated selection that boasts a variety of tastes. If you're not into beer, there are also a few bottles of wine you can choose to have a glass of. There's a small selection of canned brews you can purchase from the display case in the front of the pub, back of the pub, and in the refrigerated unit in the rear, as well as cider, spiked coffee malt beverages, alcoholic seltzers, and beer kegs. Surprisingly, there's even some bagged coffee! If you fancy bringing some pub merch home, there are branded mugs for sale. Above the bar, there are mounted TV screens, perfect for enjoying local sports games (especially European soccer matches on the weekends). Plenty of backed barstools surround the bar, and there's a line of round, leather-topped stools along the back wall. If stools aren't your cup of tea, there are two cozy leather couches you can lounge on: one in the front (by the entrance) and one in the back (next to a pool table)! If you're not craving any booze, there's a water cooler in the front of the pub and canned sodas in the fridge (Sprite and Coke). If you're feeling playful, there are couple of board games on the one of the beer display shelves by the entrance (beneath the framed red jersey). I'm more of a cider kind of girl, so Kevin suggested a fantastic, locally-owned cider out of Pittsboro, NC: "Chatham Cider Works Highway 64". It was sweet, light, bubbly, and strong, especially at 10% ABV (so, watch out!). My husband and I both sampled the "Fullsteam Igor Cake" Pastry Stout (9% ABV), which was super sweet. Hubby ended up ordering the "Casita Home Sweet Home" Imperial Stout (10% ABV), which had a cake-like flavor, was super smooth, and not too sweet. No foods are currently served here, but there are some snacks for sale behind the bar and you are more than welcome to bring in your own noms to accompany any drinks your order. From the cooler, I bought and tried: - Brown Bomber Mocha Hard Latte - flavored malt beverage (5% ABV) made with 100% Arabica coffee and milk. It's recommended to shake well and serve over ice. It was soooo creamy, chocolatey, and delicious -- you can't even tell that there is alcohol in it! - Brown Bomber Vanilla Hard Latte - same as the previous, but vanilla-flavored - Sound Craft Rosé Seltzer (5% ABV) - super smooth and tasting of freshly pressed blackberries, I could not tell that there was alcohol in it! If you're looking for a cozy spot to throw back a pint as you unwind from work, you've found the perfect place!

Pub is tricky to find, so make sure you drive down the hill and behind the main mall. But it is so…read moresmall. I came for a World Cup match. I wanted a great soccer oriented environment. Despite arriving over an hour before the match started, every seat at the bar was already taken. And there are no tables so if you aren't fortunate enough to get a bar seat, you're SOL. I saw one or two bar patrons eyeing me weirdly, like I was invading their home space. So I decided to just leave. Per the online menu, they do have over a dozen drafts available, but I didn't get to try any of them. So disappointing.

My ma sent me here to fill up her car with gas. Which went…read morefine. Then since I rarely have a chance to see 400 beers I thought, "Why not pick up a 6-pack."? So I wandered around checking them all out, and thinking, you know, if these were in some sort of recognizable ORDER this would be a lot simpler. As they appear completely random to the shopper. I finally chose a nice Dogfish Ale, marked 10.99. I feel it to find it's warm, as they all were. What's the point of having everything in refrigerated cases and they're all at 65 degrees? Seeing the hopeless nature of desiring a cold beer, obviously my bad, I go up to the registers, and the guy rings up $13.99, $15 bucks even with tax. I'm like... WHAT? That's about FORTY percent more than shown on the shelf. But I'm already there and I just figure I'll buy it and never come back. So I sigh and stick my credit card in the slot. [CARD DOES NOT READ.] Now I know my card is fine, I'd just used it, and I pay my bills. "Try again" the guy says. [Remove Card, DECLINED.] Now I KNOW I'm not the issue here, so I pull out another card. Register boy is getting irritated. "Sometime she not work right mon." He leans through the plexiglas and takes my card, waving it around the machine. [DOES NOT READ] I take the card back and attempt to slot it in place again. "Swopyacah" he says through his mask. "Swopyacah". Nope, still not registering as an English phrase. Can you translate that to the local language? I ask. "SWOPYACAH!" he orders, and grabs my card again and SWIPES MY CARD. Mystery solved. Finally the crappy machine registers my card, ringing up the usurious fifteen buck price. "Oh by the way, I said, this beer is marked 10.99 on the shelf over there, and now it's 13.99." "Well I didn't do it." He intones, shrugging all semblance of working there. "NO, I can see you're not responsible in any way...I'm telling you so you can make a note and then go correct the problem and the next guy, who might be having a bad day, won't get pissed off when he gets jacked for an extra FORTY PERCENT and smash the six pack on the floor." I didn't bother to listen to whatever mealymouthed excuse came next as I was out the door, never to return.
