So contrary to what you might be thinking, I came here to buy alcohol to eat- not drink. I woke up with the sudden urge to make Banana's Foster and went down to Trader Joes for ingredients. I was reminded of the funky NC alcohol laws (CA Trader Joe's sell wine, beer and hard liquor-FYI they even have their own generic brand of vodkas and rums!). So I quickly Googled the nearest ABC store to home and wham- I ended up here! I didn't want to invest in an entire bottle of rum (especially since the recipe called for only a few tbsp) so I bought a few of the tiny airplane bottles. They seemed to have a pretty wide selection and fair prices. The ladies at the front counter told me that there was another ABC store nearby, but that location was small and served you from behind a counter. These same ladies also helped me pick the right brand of rum for my recipe (which I was thankful for since rum ain't my poison). For all of these reason's I will return! Well, all of these reason's and the simple fact that this is the only place I CAN come to buy alcohol. North Carolina kinda has me by the balls on this one.

Good luck finding a parking space on a Saturday afternoon. Also, good luck working your way around the Papa John's delivery drivers on the way out. By the way, much love to all of the Papa John's drivers - you guys are awesome and thanks for all the pizza. The selection is one of the worst I've seen. I can get most of my favorites (Tito's, Tanqueray, Bulleit), but I always have a hard time finding anything out of the ordinary. On my last visit, the store was operating two checkout lanes, and then switched to just one as soon as 10 people needed to check out. I didn't quite understand that strategy. The Cameron Village store is much nicer.

First of all, Heritage Market is a classic convenience store with an old-time feel but carrying the usual drinks and chips and good humor ice cream. Nevertheless, if you want to escape the traffic or break up a road trip, this is a good place for a mini-stop. Whether it's a breakfast on the go, or a few minutes extra for lunch, they're set up so you can grab a sandwich, a cup of Larry's beans coffee, and sit at a small table in the corner to watch the traffic outside or the news on the overhead TVs. This store was super busy. I was inside for only a few minutes, but nearly everyone who stopped in was greeted by name by the employee. It's obviously a popular stop with the locals. As I reached into one cooler to grab some water, the cooler next to me had some large blocks of various cheeses from Ashe County Dairy, and, the cheese was conveniently located right next to some six packs of beer. Party fixings all in one convenient place - who knew? I guess there's more than one reason why these are called convenience stores. I like Heritage. It's an old-time store but with all the modern things that make a convenience store convenient.

"Swopyacah". Nope, still not registering as an English phrase. Can you translate that to the local language? I ask. "SWOPYACAH!" he orders, and grabs my card again and SWIPES MY CARD. Mystery solved. Finally the crappy machine registers my card, ringing up the usurious fifteen buck price. "Oh by the way, I said, this beer is marked 10.99 on the shelf over there, and now it's 13.99." "Well I didn't do it." He intones, shrugging all semblance of working there. "NO, I can see you're not responsible in any way...I'm telling you so you can make a note and then go correct the problem and the next guy, who might be having a bad day, won't get pissed off when he gets jacked for an extra FORTY PERCENT and smash the six pack on the floor." Hours are limited and all are closed on Sunday. While there are sales, all prices are the same state-wide. You will not find wine, beer or any non-alcoholic beverages or related products--not a typical liquor store if you're from anywhere else. Also surprisingly few of them. Best strategy is to stock up while you're there.
