What's here: this is a good place for handy people who don't mind doing a little work. It's not a convenience solution. The operating organization is the Preservation and Conservation Association, and the items for (very affordable) sale are largely historical or quite vintage. When I passed through they had light fixtures, doors, what sure seemed to be a Philco BC-221-N Vintage Radio Frequency Meter, door locks with keys, school lockers, etc etc. As another reviewer noted, the doors are all labeled with measurements and organized so you don't have to fish things out unnecessarily. Staff is super friendly and helpful, I bought a project and the staff made sure I knew what I was getting in for. There is a little museum section in the back of the store with historical items on display and they have some books for in-store use on topics like making a home more elder-friendly and dealing with vintage hardware. Community health: when we went, the doors were open for cross ventilation and half the staff were masking (note, I knocked a star off bc community spread is high right now and everyone, regardless of vaccination status, should be masking indoors).

It's all salvaged, so you don't find anything shiny and new but you'll find things that have character and are worn down - which seems to be totally in right now! This is a great place for art students looking for inspiration or random materials, theatre companies looking for set pieces, or anyone interested in doing some random building. Prices were hard to find. Not everything had a price and I didn't want to bring every piece up to the counter to check it. There's no way of knowing whether the piece you're buying is in working order or not (e.g. electrical pieces). It's a fun place to wander around in and see what they have, but didn't have anything worth my money this time around.

The guy who helped me out (I didn't catch his name) was extremely helpful and got me exactly what was needed. I was especially impressed because they obviously cater more to contractors than individuals, but I was still treated very well even though I wasn't making a large purchase. There's a very good chance I'll start my search here the next time I need anything home-improvement related.

This place used to be great…read more My recent experiences with them were frustrating and I wish I'd just gone elsewhere. They have a guy in back with a Phantom of the Opera thing going on. He's the one who does cutting and millwork. But he basically refuses to talk to people. You'd think they'd have a system in place to work around his idiosyncracies, but they really don't. As for the counter/office: There's a guy named Kevin who doesn't really return calls or follow up. If you try to work with someone else, friction results. I made an agreement with the owner. Armstrong was to cut five boards to length for $15. He kept his agreement on first order, but then charged me about $150 for cutting five boards on second order. I thought he'd just made a math error, but he dug in when I requested that he refund overcharge to my card. So now I get to waste time gathering notes and emails and writing a credit card dispute and potentially filing a small claims suit. It seems like Armstrong is struggling to survive and is making bad decisions. I don't have time for games and drama. It's time for me to find a new supplier.

The cost was a tad bit higher than a competitor I found, but the quality was 1000% better. You get what you pay for and I got the best! They also cleaned up after themselves so much you couldn't even tell I had yard work done. I also had a boulder done from Boulder Designs. The designer there was very knowledgeable and talented in helping me design my boulder. I loved the was it looked and their proof was very similar to the actual product. Everyone in the office was pleasant to deal with. This is such a unique item that I am thinking about giving one as a gift.
