Just found out last night that Menards will make it harder to shop at their stores. This time they want to make it impossible for you to go thru the exit doors to get in the store and pass thru the unused register aisles.. Why it matters? Peeps don't want to walk to the far right of the store just to go back to the far left to be where they need to be. And if you cant get it in the store, then you have to go to the back of the store to order, go up front to pay, drive around back to pick out, wait for some one to help, drive back to get checked by the guards then go . WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!! And then there are the rebates While other stores give you on the spot sales discount, Menards will have you go home ,print out a rebate form, fill it out, pay for a stamp and envelope, drive to the mail box and wait for up to 2 months for your discount. WAIT, it gets better!!! Then you can only spend it there at Menards and they hope you will add your own money to the rebate for something higher . 4/5 stars because we found 90% of what was on our Menard's shopping list. Yay! We visited on a Saturday afternoon and the store was moderately busy. A couple of employees offered us assistance, which was much appreciated. I think the prices at Menard's are on point; especially for obscure food items and things you aren't necessarily going to Menard's to pick-up in the first place. We scored a great deal on LaCroix sparking water---less than $3.50 for a 12-pack. Menard's price for Charmin toilet paper wasn't bad, either. Would definitely return again, even though it's across town for us. Some of the deals are too good to pass up. Watch the weekly circulars. read more

Menards is honestly a good store... Until you have to pick something up. It feels like every single time we come here, there's no communication department to department. We're always tan in circles, told that they can do something, when in reality they can't etc. We went to get doors, when we got here to pick them up, they were no where to be found. Turns out someone had already gotten them all down and placed them somewhere else and didn't communicate that with anyone. 90% of the time I feel as if no one wants to communicate here. I also understand not knowing everyone you work with(considering this is such a big store) but not even a head of each department or anything??? read more

Despite the fact that the infectiously catchy "You'll save big money!" song plays incessantly in this big hardware store, it's my favorite one in town. I like the selection, good prices, and truly qualified people working the floor in plumbing, electrical, and paints. Note that you have to go to the very back of the store to visit the "Service Desk" to buy things like lumber and drywall ... then you have to pick it up out back. This takes more time than Lowes or Home Depot, which is kind of annoying, but I find I get better and more diverse choices at Menards. If you want big brand tools like Dewalt or Milwaukee you'll probably not find them at Menards. The tools are more basic for sure. Still, a good hardware store. read more

Store review: With my move to Champaign, I am excited to have a Menards which is a lot cheaper than Home Depot and Lowe's, however the quality is also slightly lower, but sometimes cheaper is okay. The best items to buy here are the rebate items which allows you to get some or all of your money back in the form of a voucher to be used for future menards sale. The selection is also quite expansive as well. The only downside is that it is often hard to find someone to help you out. Pros: cheaper option for home improvement, rebate items Cons: limited staff, occasionally not very helpful employees as detailed by waiting in line at the customer service desk for 5 minutes before being helped Hidden deals: 1. the ad in huge numbers and letters says 11% OFF EVERYTHING! Sounds good but in small letters it says....mail in rebate in form of merchandise credit. I realize you need to read the fine print but to me this is a big scam to get you in the store. A mail in merchandise credit is not a % off everything. A % off means I get money off to spend where I choose. I will stick to Lowe's. read more

This Menards used to be very safe to shop at, but in Early October they started to not enforce mask wearing. I saw the same staff member with no mask twice this week, another employee with a half mask, and several customers every day (I went four times this week) wearing half mask/chin diapers. A half mask is no mask. And an employee wearing no mask is not magically immune just because she works there. Menards is seriously not safe from COVID . read more

If I place a special order and the employee says that he will call me on Monday with the status, I expect a call. If I then call on Tuesday, and the same guy says he will call back on Wednesday, I again expect a call back. By Thursday with no word, it's pretty clear the place has blown me off. Two stars because Menards has so many odds and ends at cheap prices -- from $1 throw rugs to $5 shower organizers and backpacks. They even carry name-brand food at discount prices. My husband shops at Menards all the time. Usually satisfied. Today's visit he left behind a $1.98 cabinet lock. After coming home, he discovered it wasn't in the bag. He drove back to Menards with his receipt. (Luckily we only live in Urbana). They checked the security cameras to see when he was at the checkout lane (seriously?) And because he left with a bag of other items he purchased, they assumed he had the lock. They wouldn't replace a $1.98 lock. Do you seriously think he's going to drive all the way back to lie about purchasing a $1.98 lock? read more

I do not recommend Menards' special order service. I ordered replacement garage door springs, but upon looking carefully at their return policy (can't return to a store, only via shipping at my cost plus a 25% handling fee),I immediately emailed to cancel. So far, so good. I received an email that they had sent a cancellation notice to their order processing, but that the cancellation would only work if the order had not already been processed and shipped. Later the same day, I received an order completion and shipping confirmation. I also received a UPS tracking number. Fine so far. Some days passed, but the status never changed. No update from Menards or UPS. I've contacted a Menards Special Order Representative several times explaining the "in limbo" situation. I received no replies until today simply stating that the order had been cancelled. Grrr..... Five or six days lost in getting the door repaired, and it doesn't look good for living up to my "I'll get that done" promise to my family. read more

I asked 2 people why no gel and 1 said they ran out( however they were selling it) the other gal said the corporate said we didn't have to supply any for in store use! I went to Menards today, in a hurry because I needed some materials and didn't have any money. I brought in a tile saw that I had purchased but ended up not needing. I could not find my receipt and I just wanted store credit, so I could get what I needed. Instead what I got, even though I am a contractor who has spent hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars in this store over the last twenty plus years, was accused of stealing because the person who was handling my transaction was not competent enough to find a recent transaction that matched my purchase. I will not attempt to tell you that I did not go completely ballistic, I am not accustomed to being accused of stealing. I would not spend another dollar, even a penny in that store again. So if you cannot find your receipt, be prepared to be humiliated. read more

Rude check out woman, and rude supervisor. I questioned the price of something, as she charged me more than what the sign said. The supervisor was very flip with her answer and said that the item was $29.99 with a $5.00 rebate. The sign in front of the item had no mention of a rebate. I've been shopping at this Menards for over 10 years and am consistently doing over $10k/yr in purchasing here. I own a home, a neighboring rental property, and a small business, so I have non-stop repair and improvement projects. Menards is better than Lowes and Home Depot in almost every way. For years I used to comparison shop until I finally realized it wasn't worth the time because Menards is always cheaper. The only reason I visit other stores now is to look at wider variety in things like light fixtures and kitchen and bathroom fixtures/appliances and such. For raw materials like drywall, lumber, dry-mix products like concrete, insulation, plumbing and electrical, as well as hardware/consumption items like nails, screws, fasteners, sandpaper, blades, etc... they're always the winner. You can tell just by looking at the quantities they handle. Their stacks of sheet goods move at a rate that makes an embarrassment of Lowes and HD. Menards' stockpile is gigantic. After you figure in sales and rebates Menards beats all in the price war. The only rare exception is using gift card and coupon combos at Lowes. The things I usually end up buying elsewhere: toilets, vanities, sink tops and faucets, light fixtures, etc... I have and will purchase these things at Menards but I just often find a design I like better at another store. As far as customer service goes, it's pretty lousy at Menards, but pretty awful everywhere else. You just can't expect to find people in hardware stores who know much about construction. Very few people in the store know anything about what they're selling. It's especially bad in the paint department where you really need some advice on what product to use. There's just one guy at Menards who works in plumbing that knows a lot, and I might go to him with a question. Anyone else need not waste my time. Checkout lanes are generally fast and well-staffed. The outdoor yard is a great convenience for loading. The big downside is they won't let you in without a pickup ticket. The problem with that is if you just want to look at something before you buy it, you'll have to walk about a mile through the store into the yard and back out. Frequently I'll get a pickup ticket for some 2x4's or something then when I'm in there I can inspect all the other stuff I might want, drive all the end of the yard and walk into get another pickup ticket for the other items. Early in the day it seems there are lots of people to help you load, but in the evening I usually have to chase someone down to help with drywall. It bugs me that they want to check inside your trunk when you leave - if I wanted to steal stuff I could hide it anywhere else in my vehicle, plus I frequently do have a bunch of hardware store stuff in my trunk but not once has a gate guy asked me about it, so what's the point of checking? I probably do most of my power tool purchasing online because it's almost always cheaper. Menards is definitely lacking in brands since they don't even carry Dewalt. They have some Bosch stuff but in general I feel like their power tools are cheap junk brands. I wouldn't really shop Menards for deals on power tools. I do buy plenty of hand tools at Menards. I wish propane refills didn't take so long. I wish they didn't play that irritating Menards song in the store. I wish the checkout people would stop asking me if I'm going to pay with my Menards card (I'm not). Menards has, without question, the best return policy of any store that I'm aware of. They'll take back anything after any amount of time in almost any condition for almost any reason. They'll even do a price adjustment if something drops within two weeks of your purchase. read more

Last fall I came in to get an air mattress. I rode my bike and the closest bike rack is either at JoAnns or Binny's. I decided since people come in with their scooters all the time, I'll just bring my bike in while I shop (to be clear, it's not like I was riding it through the store). Suddenly, this biker dude starts following me around the store and informs me that I must leave my bike at the front. I'm thinking to myself "why is this creep harassing me about my bike". Cyclists are used to random vigilantes harassing them so I decide to ignore him. He keeps pushing the issue and following me and shows me some sort of badge he's wearing at his hip. I used to work at a costume shop so I know these things are pretty easy to come by. At this point, I became nervous and sought out the first customer service desk out of pure fear that this man was seeking to take advantage of me behind the power tools! When I get there, I find out that this guy apparently works for them! Why an undercover security employee was sent to deal with me my bike and not a customer service employee wearing a blue vest, I cannot understand. The regular Menards employees were very helpful at that point but maybe if it's a security issue to walk your bike through the store, they should put bike racks out front! After all this, nobody asked me if I needed help finding the air mattresses which took me forever to find. read more

I had a lovely experience when I returned an item. First of, what a great idea to have a kiosk when one can retrieve a receipt based on the credit card I paid with!!!! I've only seen this at Macy's so I was really impressed. Also the customer service was amazing. We were trying to build a few pieces of furniture and checked out Menards and their lumber selection. It was much bigger and much cheaper than that at Lowes or Home Depot. The only problem was that they didn't have a saw big enough to cut the sheet of wood we bought into pieces. So unfortunately we had to buy it at Home Depot and pay much more. But I will definitely be returning to Menards in the future. read more

You can always count on them to have what you need and what they advertise. If I have trouble finding an item (not necessarily lumberyard related) I can usually find it there! They have a few groceries, a good pet supply department and a variety of surprises. I go to this store at least weekly and more often if we are working on a project. The staff is friendly and helpful. I just wish they were in other parts of the country, too. We go to Denver and we go to Florida and we have to go to the competitors in those areas. The store is what it is. It is not a true full service lumber yard despite the huge yard because it fails to maintain stock of some basic items that it should have. That is no worse nor better than any other big box store, though. What is bad is after paying $79 for delivery that I wanted into my garage the delivery man shows up and comes to the front door but doesn't ring the doorbell. He knocks on the door. That works if you are trying to reach someone in a one room apartment but it does not work in a modern house. He got no answer because he seemed unable to find the huge Ring doorbell button on the front door frame. There was no call ahead. There was no attempt to reach me. The load was dumped on the driveway instead of in my garage as requested. That is not service and at the price I paid I expect more. It is really just an average or below store and I cannot recommend it. At least a little effort at service would help. read more

I was in the store on 5/25//17 and had several items in my cart. I went to the restroom and came back 2 minutes later and my cart was gone. This is the second time this has happened. The first time I found the IDIOT putting my items back and I told the IDIOT what I thought and left the store and shopped at LOWE's. I told a cashier and she tried to find the cart. Between the 2 incidents over $300 in sales were lost. I will avoid this store in the future and shop at LOWE's or HOME DEPOT in Champaign. I will not walk this store twice to do my shopping. I am very disappointed with today's service when returning items. A person with the name Gaby at Menards'- Long Grove was very rude and did not want to help me. To my question, if someone else can help me just say NO. I was the only person at her desk so she was not busy. She did not apologize to me. When I asked for a manager, she told me to look for him/her alone. This behavior should not be accepted on the return service. Such a person should not work with costumers. She was not competent, she could not find my order, so she only said that I was doing it myself. I am terrified of this situation and it is in such a large store. There are a lot of great things about Menard's. They have a great selection and the best prices of the Big Three home improvement stores in C-U. We also found their employees in the store to be the most knowledgeable and helpful by far. My gripe with them is regarding a special order we made. It took twice as long as they said it would, and when we kept calling about the status, they'd either tell us "maybe tomorrow" or the employee wouldn't call back at all. We'll keep shopping there, but just allow more time for special orders. read more
