I usually don't write reviews but there aren't any recent updates for him. This review is solely on customer service since I ended up not going to him for my car. I called Saturday and left a message asking if they can work on my car since a check emissions system light came on. He called on Tuesday (7/5 was a holiday for everyone) to say he could look at my car on Tuesday, I said I was working but would love to bring it in first thing in the morning at 9am. He said great. He didn't get in until 9:30, at that time I had left after waiting for 20 minutes and left a VM and schedule an appointment with another mechanic. read more

Found ABC Motor through a recommendation. It was a little further than I wanted to go to get my car checked out, but I'm so glad I did! Sam was great! My check engine light had been on for a while and I was finally getting it looked at. Sam told me what was wrong and gave me an estimate. Said he could have it done in about 2-2.5 hours. I ended up going to get brunch and coming back to fixed car! The great thing about Sam is that he took his time to show me what he did. He showed the part from my car that he replaced and showed me under the hood what he did. Granted I don't know much about cars, but Sam took the time to explain everything to me. Brought-in my AUDI tt for a manual-recommended timing belt, tensioner, and water pump replacement. It was my first time to use ABC Motor so I was a little nervous and hesitant at first. But after a few minutes of conversation with Mr. Sam Lam, the owner, I felt more at ease as we continued the discussion about my vehicle. His soft-spoken but confident demeanor made me feel more comfortable and less intimidated. I was very impressed with his professionalism, knowledgeability and honesty, which was evident since he never tried to upsell me into doing other unnecessary repairs or services. I also liked the fact that he told me he didn't like to rush to insure quality. His prices are very fair and the quality of the job, superb! I think it's worth mentioning that he didn't charge me for the initial exam. and for topping-off the freon on my air-conditioning. I just purchased a used 1999 Accord, and I wanted to get everything on it fixed. When I brought it to Sam, he gave a quick run down and pointed out several issues that I hadn't spotted! The previous owner had some things done on it from cheap automotive places, which Sam explained in great detail about the reason why it was done wrong. It really opened my eyes at how inexpecienced other places can be. So I left it at the shop for him to inspect and give me an estimate. A day later, he tells me all the problems that he suggests I fix, then lists some issues that he thinks are too expensive to fix but wont effect the safety of the car. He gave me a great deal on the service and parts, and during the job he found another issue but fixed that for free. Although I didn't expect the car to have so many problems when I bought it, I'm glad Sam was able to evaluate it and get it into proper working order. I called the manager and i explained what was going on with my car, he replied that he could fix it no problem. I got a towing truck to his place and when we arrived, he took a look at the car for 4 mn and then told me he can not fix it after the towing truck left. He went back to his garage without any apology when i was double parked in one of the busiest street of San Francisco so i had to wait another 45mn to get another towing truck. Awww Hell Naw. I don't trust anyone with my Subaru WRX. Seriously, I don't trust anyone. Yuuuuggggh! I needed Sam to treat my car as if he owned it himself. I needed a Smart and Honest mechanic. What What? After a couple of dates (oil changes) I was ready to commit eRRRaY! I dropped off my baby for a complete overhaul: Timing, Therm, Gaskets, Oil Pump, the list goes on. Sam, was great and pointed out some other things that might need to be replaced. I never felt that he was upselling me or taking advantage of my trusting nature. When I felt that my brakes needed to be looked at and replaced, all of my friends recommended that I stop in to see Sam. They all bring their cars to him for routine maintenance. I'm always skeptical about bringing my car anywhere since my dad is a mechanic and had always maintained our family vehicles, and he's shared many horror stories about people bringing their cars in to get them back in worse condition. I have been going to Sam for all my automotive service needs for 8 years now (2007 to present day 2015). The first time I stepped in his shop I told him I was fascinated with working on cars but had no idea where to start. He took a wrench and walked me through how to do an oil change, how to check all the fluids on my car, and what things to keep an eye out for that will wear-and-tear. There have been times where I have called him where I was stuck at home with no idea how to fix the mess I created, and each time Sam has came through with a solution over the phone - I didn't even need to bring in the car. I have had a Lexus (sold at 195k miles with no major issues), Mercedes (going strong with no major repairs @ 120k miles), and Acura (my precious baby currently @ 45k miles) - each of which have been taken care of by Sam I know this is probably a perk for being a client of his for such a long time, but there have been plenty times where Sam has offered buying me lunch if I happen to come in during his lunch hour. I have sent at least 8 friends to Sam for their automotive service needs (ranging from Mercedes, BMWs, Hondas, Lexus, Acuras, Toyotas) and each one have told me nothing but 5-star reviews - it feels great being able to give a good shop recommendation to friends so that dealerships aren't robbing them. read more

I've been coming to Sam for over 6 years now. In fact everyone in my family trusts him with our cars. We've gotten everything done from oil changes to breaks to engine swaps here and never had a problem. His prices are more than fair and he does excellent work. When it comes to cars, he's our guy. I've never had a negative experience here and I've never seen an unhappy customer here either. Every time I go in he does a quick routine inspection for me. Last time I was there getting an oil change, Sam and his mechanic told me I needed new tires. Sure enough, a week later one of my tires popped. It's tough to find an honest place these days. ABC motor is one of them. Typically he'll show me the broken parts he replaced and gives me a thorough explanation of how it worked and why it needed to be replaced. If you're curious all you need to do is ask. Sam knows his stuff and gets the job done in a very timely manor. Believe me when I say this. If you bring your car here, you won't be disappointed. Sam is a pleasure to deal with. Honest, reliable and a shop that takes pride in their work. The car is worked on efficiently and ready as promised. Performed a brake pad, rotor replacement, distributor replacement, radiator replacement (all separate occasions). Sam consulted me on the make of parts he would be using before he went ahead and did the work. This is important - I prefer using top quality pads and rotors on my car, rather than cheap aftermarket versions of the parts. He is always very thorough on explaining what needs to be done and what was done after completing the job which I like to know. I don't know much about cars. You probably don't either. You probably don't trust mechanics much due to your ignorance. But you can totally trust Sam and the crew at ABC Motor. He has been extremely up front about everything, and very trustworthy. How do I know? The other day I took my car in because of... thumps when I accelerated or put the car in gear. He could have said he'd keep it overnight and take a look and find something to charge me $500 for. Instead he told me if it were his car, he'd get the fuel injection serviced for $70 around the corner and if the car was still making noises to come back in. Well, he was right. I went in for a stubborn check engine light in the past as well and he was extremely helpful. Bottom line is, these are good people! Give them your business. read more

You will not find another shop so honest or helpful. Just like Elena said in a past review, Sam always takes me through what he does with my car before and after he does anything. I don't know anything about cars, so it's nice to have a safe place to go to where I know I won't be overcharged or charged any unknown or questionable fees (unlike the dealerships that almost always do that...). This is THE place to bring your car! Sam is the BEST! I have a 23 year old car (1991 VW Fox) and it suddenly died on me. Okay, so it's an old car but I have owned it since it was new, it's paid for and it is a good second car for me and my partner. I wasn't ready to let go of it yet but I knew that this problem could result in the final death certificate of the car. I didn't have a mechanic to take it to and a friend told me about ABC Motor and Sam....So I had the car towed there and Sam got started on it. Sam is one of those rare mechanics that answered my calls, called me with updates and kept me informed along the way as he tested and investigated the problem. Most mechanics would have given up on the car but Sam saw this as a challenge and was determined to find out what was wrong with it so that I could proceed with fixing it or send it to the junk yard. Sam figured it out, told me what it would cost to fix it and then fixed it. It runs like a new car now! Again, I realize it is an OLD car but I would rather spend money on an old car that I know than have to replace it with an unknown used car that could become a money pit. The day I went to pick it up, Sam showed me photos of the car (that he took with his phone) while it was all apart. By the looks of everything, he spent a lot of time working on it. I am so glad that I found an honest mechanic like Sam...I will bring my VW back to Sam until it stops passing Smog check...and I will be bringing my other car to him as well. He has earned my trust (and business) and when it comes to mechanics, it is hard to know who to trust. One final note that I think sums up my experience at ABC Motor: When I was paying Sam for the work that he did, I was so grateful that he fixed the car and knew that he had to be losing money on this job (or at the very least broke-even), so I offered him a $150 tip...and he REFUSED to take it! I had my alternator replaced a couple of months ago at a shop while up in Reno, and was concerned yesterday when my battery light started coming on intermittently. Of course, this happened on a Friday night, so I figured it'd be tough to even get an appointment on a Saturday. I called, and Sam said to come in and he'd take a look at it. He and his associate hooked the battery up and checked everything. Turns out that after their testing everything came up fine, which left me relieved. Best of all, he didn't charge for the testing.
