We got hungry after running errands so went out for dinner this Thursday around 6pm, parked on the street (free parking), and seated immediately by a friendly hostess. We chose to eat indoors since it was hot out (90's) so we sat at table 1 for the high top seats to accommodate my husband's height. There were around 5 other tables occupied and the rest of the dining area was empty. Our server was Boo and she had a delightfully bubbly personality, letting us know the specials and local origins of the food. We ordered Coke no ice, ginger ale no ice, cajun fries no bacon, well-done Swamp Burger, buffalo chicken bites, and a mahi mahi fish basket. My husband decided to use their restroom, which interestingly enough, are located outside around the corner of the building. I'm guessing this was done so the chefs in the cooking area (in the food truck) could use them easily. Our drinks arrived in minutes and appetizer (cajun fries) arrived around 10 minutes later. The rest of the food was brought out about 10 more minutes after that. The entire order was correct and made very well. Cajun fries were crispy with gooey cheese sauce and cajun spices. Fish basket was tasty and not fishy at all (yay!). My husband said his burger was good and not oily. All in all, cost was about $95 with a generous tip. We would come back for another date here, hopefully with Boo as our server again :)

Moving from Grand Rapids recently, and following mustard plug since I was in high school (long time ago haha) I couldn't miss this show with VooDoo. love that they make it to Florida. Had never been to DeLand, but once we got here, and saw the Venue we were pleasantly surprised. The check in process was flawless, and they had a massive food truck with tons of wonderful options. They had an outdoor and indoor bar, fully staffed, with lots of drink options. The bar is very punk rock, with lots of nostalgic memorabilia hanging from the walls. Lots of neon with the angst of chaos amongst the stickers and art. I felt very at home, and this was the perfect venue to host ska music. I highly recommend people to take the time to appreciate the love they have put into this place that's hidden down the alley of this beautiful small town. Overall, a must whether it's a concert, beer or quick bite to eat. Super casual and fun, and also a perfect place to just hang out and shoot a game of pool with friends.

My all time favorite place to be on a Saturday night! It's that place that makes you feel welcome…read moreeven if they're about to close...and I've even called before and said I'm on my way there (my birthday) but that I may not make it before closing time...do you know they actually stayed open just so I could have at least TWO free glasses of whatever I wanted and it was free because it was my birthday?? THAT'S the kind of place this is. The owners are the greatest people in the world...full of life, knowledge, and Shasta has even made the local magazine and was touted as a "budding" entrepreneur! My first picture has the other owner, Eric (Shasta's husband), behind the bar serving us. Knowledgeable in the making of mead, craft beer, etc...you can have the best conversations with this man! You will learn so much about all the things you like to drink and how they're made, different ways to brew, different flavorings, yeasts, temperatures, ingredients...just a wealth of knowledge! And finally, but not least, their karaoke night is insanely fun! All kinds of music is played, sung to (some, you wonder if indeed that IS called singing! Lmao) and some familiar ones are picked up by the entire bar! Yes, yes, they are also a "vape lounge", but there's no stinky cigarette smoke smell, no ashes or butts sitting around in ashtrays...everything is clean and fresh smelling, they have huge fans and usually leave the doors open as well...that way, anyone who MAY be bothered by an accumulation of vape fog will not be! You'd hafta try them to believe it. So what are you waiting for? See ya on Saturday night!

I was at the Flying Boat last week (Ocala, near Belleview) and talking to Kevin about going to the…read moreMetro Craft Beer Headquarters. Kevin said that was a good location, but recommended I look at Sandy's Shack if I wanted better prices on brew. I went over the next day. To set the stage, Ocala is - surpriingly - a great craft beer city. In fact, there are other towns close by that also have a great selection in their taprooms. You can buy beer to go in many of the taprooms, but store wise, Ocala has two really good beer shops: Sandy's and Metro. This little gem of a shop sits in the Beall's shopping center behind the Outback on Silver Spring Blvd east of downtown. It is primarily a beer and wine shop and the shop owners, Sandy and Alex, were manning the fort when I went in. I started a conversation and Sandy showed me back to the beer section. There are 5 colors full of beer and the options are well curated. Many of the best breweries in Florida, with a decent selection of great brews from other states. I also ended up buying a bottle of wine, as they had a great selection of Italian wines: Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Nabbiollo, etc. And the knowledge the owners show for both wine and beer is fantastic. How does it compare to the Metro Craft Beer Headquarters? I think Metro may have a slightly larger selection, but fewer brews you can buy by the single. Plus, I found many of the beers to be a dollar or two more expensive per can at Metro (example: $8.99 for a 450 North Slushie Sour versus Sandy's $6.99). As such, it would be prudent, economics wise, to see if you can exhaust Sandy's Shack prior to Metro, unless you have a need for a particular beer you know is more likely to be at Metro. The shop also does some free tastings and the owners are more than happy to give you an education on wine and/or beer. Highly recommend.
