I hadn't ever been inside this store until I found out they were offering a class in fondant/gumpaste... So, I am not taking a cake decorating class here and found this store to be quite the hidden gem. Most of the ingredients that I would typically buy off of the Internet, they have. Powdered dyes, FOND-X, Silpat in large sizes to accommodate the larger pieces of fondant.... They also have a huge selection of candy making supplies, cookie cutters, and other various baking necessities. Mind you, a lot of the items they have range from Wilton Brand all the way to the higher-end baking stuff. So there is a great range for beginners to professionals. I had not experienced rude employees until I was at check out paying while my sister kept an eye on my daughter, she had a spatula in her hand and was playing with it until my sister put it back. Liz, the lady at the cash register was not paying attention to my money because she was too concentrated on the spatula she wanted off the shelf because my daughter "put it in her mouth" but my sister reassured us it was never put in her mouth. I offered to pay for it, if that was the case, so she charged me for the spatula. She was super rude about it and kept looking at us like we did something bad. When you walk into the store it smells like cake even though they don't actually sell cakes here. There are tons of different decorations for every imaginable celebration, most under a dollar a piece. There are tons of different types of candles, and uniquely shaped cookie cutters. I also come there to get bottles of their emulsion flavors for my baked goods (try the red velvet to intensify the flavor of your cake). I was a bit nervous going into the shop for the 1st time. I had seen reviews on other sites that said the staff was not friendly, and I was needing to ask a lot of questions. I found the staff very helpful. They know their merchandise and can direct you right to the hard to find items. You can find ANYTHING you want for cake decorating. The first time I went into the store I was looking for supplies needed to make a princess cake. I saw a cake at a local grocery store and went in looking for the supplies needed to make it myself. They had exactly what I needed all prepackaged in a kit. Recently, I sent a friend of mine in because she was throwing herself a Double Quncineta (she was turning 30.) I made her a beautiful cake but told her she needed to find her decorations. She found everything she needed for her gag b-day cake. The staff at ABC told her they want pictures. Prices are reasonable. I have found that most stuff is cheaper than buying online, but be prepared... As other reviews have said, if you are there browsing you will find extra stuff and spend more $. read more

ABC is really the only place in Phoenix of its kind, other than going to Michael's or Joann's for cake supplies which can get pricey. They do not always have what I am looking for but they have a wide selection of many cake baking and decorating items. If you are thinking of making a themed cake, you can really customize it here because they sell individual decor items here (glass slippers, balloons, figurines, cartoon characters, etc., you get the picture). They even sell fondant and edible cake jewels, pearls, glitter, etc. The tips are in the glass case and they also sell gorgeous sugar flowers if you don't know how or are too lazy to make it yourself. Come here for the cheap cake boxes and cake cardboard rounds. One of my favorite cakes made with some edible paint from this store was the NIN cake (which you can google if you like, I have pearls around mine). The cons: *Close too early :( *Small store that easily gets very crowded, so you may be overwhelmed by Thelma and Louise looking for a spatula. *Most of the workers are snobby. With the exception of one older woman, I have never received friendly service from anyone else in the many years I have been coming here. I remember coming here when I was a young teen and it has always been the same. Luckily I just devised a get in and get out routine, I already know what I need and where it is. They have what I need and I am willing to put up with it because it beats ordering online, or paying high prices for a small selection elsewhere. This store is great. Comprehensive collection of baking and cake decorating supplies. They had everything I needed to complete the cakes for my brother's wedding. The staff is everywhere and super helpful. I didn't feel lost at all. They were also quite friendly. Frick and Frack (not their names, but what can ya do? :) ) behind the counter were hilarious to listen to and interact with. So fun! It's in a good central location, although it is still quite a trek for me. It's worth it to find everything I need in one place. Their website is also super helpful. I call this "The Cake Store". That's the only name it needs to me. It's been "The Cake Store" since I was about 5 and I used to come here with my Aunt who make professional cakes. While she hunted for what she needed and scoped out what was new, I was in imaginative kids heaven. Rows upon rows of tiny cake toppers. Mini barbie dolls, mini cans of coke (and beer), teddy bears, army men, sports cars, Disney characters, Strawberry shortcake, 50's Retro Bowling themed stuff - and SO much more. And all of these things are available from things as small as pick flags (they stick in cupcakes or occationally on cakes) all the way up to large 3D things to make a "setting" on a cake. It's pretty amazing. Then there are the professional baking pans and accessories. I love the new cupcake trees, and I first saw them here. They have great wedding cake pans too. Don't want to make your own frosting and fillings? They have pre-made stuff here so you don't have to even bother. Or are you more a candy person? They have tons of candy molds for just about any possible creation - and candy chips that you can melt down. Or, if you'd love to do this but are clueless - guess who offers classes? They have a full class room right next door with Wilton classes teaching everything from cake decorating to cookie bouquets and seasonal fun classes like gingerbread house creating. This store is fantastic. I don't decorate cakes, so I can't take advantage of everything they have to offer. But I do make cake pops and I can find many of my supplies at ABC - sprinkles (the great wall of sprinkles!), sucker sticks, candy melts, candy molds and boxes. Prices aren't the cheapest on some items, so if it's something I can pick up at Michael's with a coupon, I will do that instead. I love to browse the aisles and marvel at all the products they have, wishing I had the talent and use for everything! They offer several classes I'd like to try, but the times just don't fit my schedule. The staff is friendly, although I don't usually have any more interaction with them other than check-out. It's a 30 mile drive from home, so I only stop in weekday afternoons after work, when it seems to be fairly busy. Which means the only thing I'd really whine about is their hours - a 5:30pm closing time is a little earlier than I'd like, and some days I can't make it in time! read more

This is Disneyland for bakers! They have everything you will ever need to bake and more. For a newbie baker, like me, it can be intimidating. Okay, it WILL be intimidating. However, I can keep walking through their aisles for hours and not get bored. So much to see, touch and feel. My wife's family has used this place for years but I had the pleasure of going in for the first time yesterday. I went in for mermaid theme stuff but as I was checking out I saw a gold, cursive "one" cake topper on display and I had been on the hunt for this for an event I had been asked to help with on short notice. I asked the girl behind the register if it was for sale and unfortunately the stock wasn't coming in til next day, which would be too late. Sabrina was so great and packaged up the one on display for me to purchase! I know it seems small but when your as detail oriented as myself, it means the world! Literally my favorite baking supply shop in town! I wish they were open about one more hour each day as I am not very close to them and I'm always pulling up 10 minutes before closing time...haha. But the prices are good for the average consumer and can save over some of the bigger stores. Also nice to buy just one disposable cake box or cupcake container, instead of multiples if you bought online or another retailer. I attended their 50th anniversary party this morning and I have to say, the staff did an enthusiastic job putting it together and entertaining the customers. They served a variety of homemade mini cupcakes (white, chocolate, pink champagne, lemon), cookies, and beverages (lemonade & pina pineapple, rice flavors- unique!), as well as some candies. I also like the non-edible cake / star confetti they sprinkled around that I could collect to take home. They had raffles & prizes, as well. They gave a 15% discount in their entire store, and I had a bonus 10% off from the back of their business card that I picked up when they had a booth at the Ultimate Women's Expo recently. Big savings, and I was able to find some mini cookie cutters, cookie cutters, candy mold tray, and a magazine cheaper. There was a photo op with Baker Bob that you could take with your own cameras, to treasure ;) The store is a decorating & baking supplies mop-and-pop where a dedicated baker can find almost anything needed to, you know, bake ;) They even have a fridge full of whipping cream (remember that nom-nom 'frosting' of yesteryears before fondant of today?). Of course, there may be limits in what they carry so you'd have to find some elsewhere i.e. Wilton candy melts- they have other brands but unless you are specific in certain brands. They also carry a few baking books & magazines. The store is located in a small strip mall since 1985 that gave off a slight nostalgic feel in a so-so neighborhood (typical of Indian School Rd, you know), so that made it worthy of my trip just to feel vintage-y... I had shopped in the store a couple times in the past and was happy to visit again to check out the event. 50 years in business is a long time for Phoenix (gasp)! Jan 2021 - I purchased a sugar sheet (thankfully, just one to test it out), and the picture came out terrible. The entire photo had a green hue/tint to it. I expressed my surprise at the green pic and was told that's just how it came out of the printer. Well, I tried to support a local store, but when I got home I ordered a sugar sheet online from Inkedibles.com. What a difference...a huge difference! The pic actually looks like the original pic. The colors are perfect. There is no green hue. I figured just like my printer at home, when the colors start to run out, it will pull from whatever color it finds. I called the store manager, Sabrina, to let her know. I know they don't refund "food products", but I honestly thought if I spoke to the manager and explained that they sold me a subpar product, she would probably offer to refund my money. I was even going to bring the new color sheet to them so they could see the difference in what the pic should look like and what their pic looked liked, but surprisingly, she just gave me the same answer...."that's just the way the pics come out sometimes"..."it's not the ink because we use it so frequently, we replace it all the time". Ok, then it may be time to get your printer serviced or a new one. Or at least tell your customers up front "sometimes the pics don't come out good", but no one told me that when I placed my order. Or imagine, a surgeon (not quite the same I know, but for comparison purposes) tell you, "well, we win some and we lose some" right before surgery! Great selection and variety for your baking needs! The only down side for me are their hours. Baking is a hobby for me that I truly love but to pay the bills I must work, work, work, in the world of offices schedules and deadlines. If my shift ends at 5 or 6pm then it is impossible with the congestion and traffic to get to ABC after work, the only real window of opportunity is Saturdays and that is usually when I reserve time to do the actual baking, besides the shop is way closer to work than home. So thats it, never a perfect scenario its it if you want to get what you need for baking perfection, you must work extra hard!!! read more

Growing up on Long Island, I used to frequent a place called Grandma's Candy Kitchen. There, my mom and I would be transported into a world of chocolate melts, molds, and every piece of cake decorating material under the sun. When I moved, I was convinced my holiday chocolate-making was over....and then I found ABC. This place is PERFECT! Not only do they have delicious chocolate melts and a huge selection of chocolate molds, but the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Love this place! I could spend hours looking at all the neat things they have! I drive from Tucson whenever I need stuff for cake orders. Wish there were more places like this around so I wouldn't have to drive so far. Some things, especially fondant tools, are pricy, but I don't always have time to order online or the shipping is too expensive. A lot of people say the staff is friendly and helpful, sadly, I've been here 20+ times since starting my cake business and not once have I found the staff friendly or helpful. Worst customer service!!! I've been there a couple of times I've never had one person come out of their way to see if I needed help I always have to find them. One time I was ready to check out and one lady looked at me and continued to stock product, I then waited for another lady to look at me took her a minute then she finally walked over to check me out. This last time I went in I got what I needed, went to check out. The cashier was rude didn't ask if we found everything ok, didn't look at us, didn't say have a nice day or smile. She then started a conversation with another customer in the other line!!! Sooooo rude!!! I work in retail and this is not okay!!! I depend on this place for a lot of supplies, particularly cake boxes and plastic molds since they have a pretty good variety of those. I've always found the employees to be helpful with a good attitude and the prices to be about the same as Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. One thing I wish they had was black standard cupcake liners. You would think being a cake specialty store that they would raise their prices on items, but they really don't. Everything is marked as low as they can still make a profit on. They carry so many items I wouldn't even know where to begin. Every pan you can think of, cake toppers, sprinkles galore, pre made fondant, cake fillings... the list goes on. If you're not sure they carry it, just give them a call. If they don't have it, they'll let you know where to go to get it. I'm so glad I found this place! They have cake decorating classes if that's your thing. I just signed up myself. There are 4 courses you take and each course contains a "kit" you must purchase. Here's the general breakdown: Classes are put on by Winston. These are the same classes you can take at Michael's Craft Store but they are half the cost. Cost per Course: $25 (this covers all 4 lessons) Amount of lessons per course: 4 Cost for Kit: $25 - $35 depending on class (kits include all the tools you will need for the class. Cake tips, cutting tools, etc) You meet once a week, for 4 consecutive weeks, for 2 hours. You can call and register right over the phone and they will let you know when the next "class" starts. Since I just signed up for Course 1, here's the breakdown of what you will learn: Essentials of Cake Decorating The use of cake decorating tools How to make buttercream icing for future lessons How to fill and frost a cake Very basic. Class 2 you will get into creating flowers. Class 3 looks like it's going to bring it all together. Class 4 is where you learn the fondant and gum paste. I love to buy from locally owned shops in Phoenix whenever possible but the lack of friendly service in this place makes me want to buy elsewhwere (big box or internet). I had one experience with a SUPER unfriendly sales clerk but chalked it up to "being busy". I returned a month later and as luck would have it, I had to be helped by the UNFRIENDLY lady again! This is a one stop shop for cake decorating and candy making supplies. This place reminds me of Home Depot. There are many "shiny" things that can get you totally distracted from what you were going there for, but the staff is knowledgeable and helps make sure you get everything you need to complete your project. There is no other place like it in the Phoenix area. The product selection is more than triple that of any Michael's store and here the staff can actually give you recommendations rather than just directing you to the right aisle.
