    Five Stone Tax Advisers

I started using Five Stone Tax Advisors to challenge my Austin property taxes (two properties, for…read moremany years) for quite a few years now, after a bruising meeting with the Travis County committee that meets with homeowners, a horrible experience. Most years, Five Stone has been successful in getting the appraised value of my home lowered - sometimes by a lot. I think the fee they charge for this is reasonable, and they seem to be efficient and very easy to deal with. Usually, we exchange only 1 or 2 messages per year. They donate a substantial portion of their profit (about a third) to local charities, and they invite their clients to choose from a list. They're a great business; highlky recommend.

Useless service that cost us money when we tried to use them. We signed up a few years ago (2024)…read morefor the purpose of having them protest our property tax increase. They did zero work, literally zero, as soon as we signed up they literally told us to go find comparable property sales ourselves and sent a bill at the same time because they wouldn't do any work to try and protest for us thus they knew we would not find any savings. The entire reason we used them was to find the comparable and do the protest, which they didn't do either of. They should at least have a policy that if they have zero data they can use to make a case, you should not pay anything to them at all since they won't do anything. I would not use them again, I have contacted state representatives to suggest regulating this industry due to unethical companies like this one.

Fast Forward to a couple of weeks ago. I was so happy with my first H and R Block experience that I visited again...... bad move. The thing that I didn't realize is my taxes are a little more complicated from a year ago. I am filing jointly with my wife, I moved to another state, I have a 401K, a HSA, etc. With each complicated task, you get charged more money. I left H and R block with a 400 dollar bill! The crooked thing is that they don't tell you your total till after you are done completing your filling. After sitting there for 2 hours I didn't have the patience left to say "Never mind, I'll go somewhere else".I left angry that some of my wonderful tax return would have to go back to H and R Block. Especially considering I don't have any idea what the heck they did. I watched the guy hit the buttons..... it looked like something I could have done from home! Next year its all about Turbo Tax. If you are single, then H and R Block is great, but if you have difficult taxes I would consider finding another alternative.

I had my basic tax returns done with Greg for 2013, and will not be returning. I was disappointed…read morewith his communication skills, which were spotty at best. The main issues I experienced were 1. Not receiving complete responses to my questions in a timely manner. and 2. An inconsiderate attitude. First, the few times I had questions (not many, or complex), I was mindful that it might take a while to hear back since he was completing these the rush week right before April 15. No problem. Take your time ... But once he responded, he'd respond only partially, leaving key questions unanswered .... leaving me to (time and again) chase after him, via phone and email, for simple answers. Not pleasant or considerate, and a lot of work. These were easily avoidable experiences. I tried to withhold judgment and give him the benefit of the doubt, but the final exchanges soured me further. I needed to obtain my 2012 tax papers that I'd left at his house, and did not have time to stop by to pick them up. Incidentally, he didn't mention his business was at his house before my first appt. Home businesses are great, but I - and my GPS - would just have appreciated knowing this ahead of time! I didn't have time to stop by again because I was busy moving. I figured for the price I paid him, I'd earned some documents sent back via mail. I asked him kindly to send the papers a few times. Again, no response ... one week, two weeks, three. I did, however, receive a nice automated thank you email or two emphasizing the importance of Yelp reviews to his business and inviting me to leave one! Finally I told him that I'd found his communication skills disappointing, to say the least, and asked him to clarify if he'd sent/or would send my papers back. His response made it clear that he preferred clients picking things up at his house mail box (regardless apparently of his clients' lives/needs/ schedules/preferences); sending client documents back via postal mail -- which I'd consider standard/reasonable considering what I paid -- was in his view " a favor that he could accommodate under special circumstances"!!!! (Apparently only after being asked how many times?) (I did finally receive the documents, several weeks later - via certified mail.) Greg put his own preferences and concerns above mine (his client). He was inattentive, and arrogant. Next time, I hope to find someone more considerate, and thoughtful.

I also believe in telling others about superior service when I come across it so I've chosen to take the time to write a review regarding my experiences in working with him. Greg Schroen's services have more than warranted glowing reviews from my husband and I. We found Greg's name on an Internet search for Tax Preparers and decided to go to him for help with our taxes. We left the experience with much more than we expected! Not only is Greg a fabulous tax preparer, but his personality and 'desk-side-manner" helped us to feel at ease while dealing with our two most dreaded issues, the IRS and money in general. Greg is amazingly adept at explaining the complicated concepts that have always causes us confusion and stress. He listens to our questions and concerns and answers them, he provides us insights and clears up misconceptions we have, and he helps us to understand our options so that we may make the best decisions for our situation and needs. He has provided us information and assistance that we would have never found on our own and has, therefore, made our lives easier and better, all the while being a great human being and someone we are glad to know. Knowing that Greg is on our side has taken a tremendous weight from our shoulders and made managing our taxes and finances seem possible. We have been able to face stressful money and IRS situations with confidence since we know we have someone on our side that really knows what to do, how to do it, and how to explain it so it makes sense to us. We highly recommend Greg Schroen's services to anyone who wants to get their taxes done properly in order to eliminate that nagging worry that accompanies the pile of tax forms you filled out yourself and sent in to the IRS. (C'mon, you know you worry about it. Were you supposed to use Form 1259? Did you enter the right formula on line 64? Will the IRS audit you because of an error you made? ...We used to worry about all these things, too, until we found Greg!) We also highly recommend you go to Greg for any financial services he offers that could meet your needs. Greg is a knowledgeable, capable and good person and he had a genuine desire to see people succeed in setting and meeting their financial goals. We give Greg an A+. Give him your time and your business and you'll not only be glad that you did it and be better off for it; you'll probably be writing a similar glowing review here, too. Thanks, Greg! You're the best!

Hi, This review is…read moreto warn other customers of what could happen to them. I was told my a financial advisor that Ms.Heyman the tax advisors would be a great assets to compete my personal taxes this year. I am the type to complete my taxes or HR block as I do every year. This year I decided to use the advice of a my financial rep who stated " let Michele see what she is able to complete with your taxes and if you don't want to use her to file you don't have to" I then reached out to Michele explained not once but twice this was my first time using a CPA. Here is an exact e-main to Michelle: "2nd question I have is as I stated before this is our first time using a personal CPA to complete our taxes and not use HRBlock. I did fill out my taxes in HR block just to see where we would be and we are owing around $158 as of now. Now once you are able to complete our taxes will you be able to let us know if we owe or will be receiving a refund? If there is by chance tax credits we may miss or did not understand. Also, I know we will have to pay you for your services so i know that may be on top of filing our taxes(if we owe). I just want to make sure I complete the most cost effective way to complete my taxes but also have them completed correctly." So knowing I have already completed my taxes in HR Block and only owe $158 asked her again I am just looking for the most cost effective way to compete my taxes. Instead of stating you will be paying at a minimum $650 + the $158 you owe in taxes you probably should just file through Hr block. She proceed to ignore that question and ask for more documentation. So now they would like me to pay $650 to them (money hungry) pay $138 to for my taxes to The IRS instead of the 3 HOURS it took me to fill out my taxes with Hr block. After explaining this to instead of even offering a discounted 50% for the way she could have done. Which would not have been a lot as I have nothing but W2 and day care for tax credit it's not like I'm a business who has tons of stuff. She wants to charge me interest now on a unpaid invoice after speaking with her about this. Very unprofessional and I understand you have to make a living as well. The facts that I I asked multiples times before hand how this would be handled and still did not have a clear answer or even a honest professional one (you save money by not using us) would of been a great start. I do not recommend this service unless you are unable to use a computer and log into a tax service provider for yourself. You're better off paying a friend $50 for this service. Very smart lady I'm sure but did not look out or have the best interest for me and my family during this pandemic where people lost their jobs.
