Park your car and walk everywhere! Within 3 blocks or so are the Oregon Shakespeare Festival theaters, the downtown shops, a bike rental shop, a marvelous grocery store, banks, coffee shops, several great restaurants, and more!
We stayed in the Heron, a lovely, roomy, very clean, 1-bedroom, 1-bath cottage that has everything you need: iron/ironing board, washer/dryer, dishwasher, outdoor BBQ...the works. The bed is quite comfortable. It's nice to sink into the two recliner-type chairs in the living room (futon sofa in there as well). TV if you need it. Great wi-fi. Lots of windows, so it's not dreary (all the windows have blinds for complete privacy).
We were there during a heat streak--106 degree days with nighttime "lows" of 68 degrees! The Heron's A/C chilled the kitchen/living room nicely. We opened the screened bedroom windows and used the ceiling fan to circulate the night breezes. Tall trees shade the cottages and grounds. The short path between the cottages leads to an inviting shared deck overlooking the shaded creek, and there are a couple of comfy plastic adirondack-style chairs for relaxing. So we stayed cool despite the heat.
We walked to the large local community market for groceries and for ready-to-eat selections. Hot, delicious, individually packaged portions of salmon were about $3 each, and there were whole rotisseried chickens, as well as a food bar with a variety of hot entrees and a salad bar.
We also walked to, and highly recommend, the Eleven Bistro (don't miss the Mar Y Montana, a paella-like dish, and the Duck Espagnola), the Thai Pepper restaurant, and the Taj Indian Cuisine restaurant (wonderful all-you-can-eat lunch buffet). We fried some bacon and eggs, slathered our toast with farmers market jam, and ate breakfast at our patio table (the Heron has a private front deck with a table and four plastic chairs). In the early morning or after dinner, we occasionally saw a deer or two strolling by our cottage or feeding down by the creek. Idyllic!
We loved staying at the Heron. It is a clean, well-outfitted cottage on quiet, charming grounds with safe off-street parking. It is within easy walking distance to the OSF theaters and the downtown shops and restaurants. The owners are good communicators who respond promptly. This is the perfect place to stay in Ashland! read more
