If it tells you anything, I was too excited to dig in before taking a photo. I'd never been here before and the menu was daunting! So many good choices and they also had a case of baked goods in addition to the frozen menu. I asked the workers at the counter for help and they were more than happy to offer suggestions. My order was prepared LIGHTNING fast. Like, seriously. I had only just walked to the pickup counter when she whirled around and had it ready. I got the cookie dough cake batter flurrie. Topped with whipped cream of course, it was so delicious! I couldn't finish it all and had the rest later in the evening and to my surprise, all the cookie dough chunks were at the bottom! When I looked at the menu, I needed to step back and take a few minutes to figure out what I wanted. They had a ton of different flavor options and different ways you could order them. I eventually decided there was no way I could decide and had to ask for a recommendation, which the girls at the counter were happy to give. So much so that I won't penalize them for employing this horrible new trend in seating, which is metal chairs with strange backs that are not meant for any human being to enjoy. There are several varieties that are available pretty much all the time, and then a special menu that rotates based on the whim of their employees. They also have custard cakes, pies, and other goodies to go, as well as pints and quarts of their own flavors packaged and ready. I went with the chocolate cookie dough custard, and this was definitely not a bad decision at all. The custard was creamy, had a deep chocolate flavor, and then those chunks of doughy goodness sprinkled liberally throughout to provide a texture change and flavor pop. I was glad I got the larger size, as I scraping the cup at the end trying to get every last tasty bit. I ventured into Abbott's with my son to try them out. The first thing that hit me after walking in what the delicious smell of the fresh waffle cones being made. Is there any better smell than that? Yum! It's awesome to see a place that makes them fresh. A warm greeting by the people behind the counter where they were making the waffle cones welcomed us into the store. Friendly faces all around. The menu had plenty of options to choose from. I opted for the smallest portion because we had just finished dinner at Dairy-O across the parking lot. I always get vanilla to start because it's my go-to flavor for first visits. If they can do vanilla well then I go for a different flavor on another visit. My vanilla was good. Not amazing like I've had at other places, but tasty. I'm not wowed like I'd hoped. However, the service was friendly and quick and there was still those delicious freshly made waffle cones that were calling out to me. My son and I settled into a seat at the bar in front of the waffle cone area. My son ordered coffee flavor. He loved his and said it was the most concentrated coffee flavor he'd ever tasted. He would definitely order that flavor again. As we sat at the counter, I casually asked the gentleman making the waffle cones how he managed not to eat every fresh one that came out. He promptly handed me a hot from the iron waffle cone! Oh this made my day!! I of course shared it with my son, but it was the best cone I'd ever had. Soft and warm, and a slightly crispy crust. As it cooled, of course it got more firm but it was SO good! As for value, I did feel it was a little overpriced for what you get. I know quality ingredients aren't cheap and neither is the time it takes to turn those ingredients into a quality product, but my son would have liked a bit of a larger portion since he ordered a larger size than I did. I can't speak for any of the other specialty items since I didn't order any. Abbott's is a solid 4 stars in my book for the custard. The service and waffle cones bumped it up to 5 for me though. Their Butterfinger Crunch is comprised of the creamiest vanilla custard loaded with a significant amount of the candy bar. This place is a must stop on the way past Clemmons on US Highway 40. We are accustomed to Andy's custard and how rich and creamy it is, Abbott's is way better. The custard is firm, creamy and rich, and very flavorful. The flavor choices and toppings were plentiful with something for the entire family. Our crew ordered an assortment of their offerings. The cookie treats, milkshake, and assorted sundaes were selected and did not disappoint. Service was great and the shop itself was clean and well organized. The treats were so good we ordered 3 pints to go for later. I'd encourage everyone to try this spot. We will definitely be making trips over in the future for our custard fix. read more

Before I launch into my review of my fourth frozen custard joint, I want to invite you once again to read my review of Andy's Frozen Custard for a brief history of the rise and fall of frozen yogurt and exactly what frozen custard is as it makes it's rise through the ranks of frozen treats. As far as Abbott's is concerned, the bottom line is this: they make a positively superior product in every way. The texture, consistency, and flavor of Abbott's Frozen Custard is second to none. I have ordered vanilla at all of the frozen custard places I have visited, but I have also sampled the chocolate, and Abbott's chocolate is the best of all of them. That is the case for me because I don't like an overwhelming amount of chocolate flavor, for it sometimes seems artificially overdone. I found Abbott's to be perfect. The vanilla was excellent as well. In addition, Abbott's makes a homemade waffle cone, which really makes a difference--fresh, crispy, malty--and it tips the scales in Abbott's favor as far as the best frozen custard I have run across so far. Also sporting more flavors than other places, the Abbott's in Clemmons is in a really nice location and has some outdoor seating in a new shopping center. read more
