I WILL NOT return to "A Better Smog" due to their poor customer service and their made-up fee of an additional $5.00 because I needed my smog test conducted at a Star Certified smog check center. The lady behind the counter at "A Better Smog" tried to tell me it was a state fee, but she later admitted it was an additional fee they chose to charge. (Think about it, if the state wanted another $5.00, the state would have increased my vehicle registration fee by $5.00.) I used to bring all my vehicles here for years, but never again. I believe they changed owners and now they are overpriced and it seems they add in house fees at will. read more

This place is a joke! I pay $70 for my daughters car to get it smogged. He says it's a hose that's not connecting. Ok. I get a hose clamp. Go back today. The lady says "sorry he's not here. He will be back in an hour." So I go back a few hours later and now he says" sorry I'll be back in 15 mins. Have to go get my dogs". Then I go back and laughed at me and says " it's not a new hose. The clamp isn't going to work". So unprofessional. Not even realizing it takes time to get things done and I had to include his in convincing time and he had the nerve to laugh. No free retesting. Which is crap! Never am I going back there again!! read more

This smog station is not very competitive in my opinion. I, as well as most of my directly related family have been going to them for years. I never recall having a bad experience with them until this year's smog test. Its not a horrible experience,but it could have been better. I came in on a weekday at 4:30 p:m and was greeted by a heavyset gentleman at the counter who seemed a little annoyed and was initially somewhat rude.First thing he said to me was me why I arrived so late. Well, I explained to him that I just got off of work. In fact,I was still in my very dirty work clothes.I never made an appointment since an appointment is not necessary and the smog was finished by 5:00 when the store closes. If this guy was the owner (maybe he's the new owner) he sure didn't seem like he cared about providing enthusiastic and helpful customer service.In fact he seemed like he was more anxious about quickly finishing the smog so he could leave. When my smog was done he said I failed it because the vacuum lines were not hooked up to the sensor. He said they couldn't stick the hoses back in,and it looked like they mangled a line trying to force it back in. The passenger side drivers window is also left open and won't roll up!. I don't know what they did to it,but I eventually got it to roll up. What gets me is the heavyset gentleman who has so far done all the conversing says albeit in a friendly tone 'Well lets get your paperwork ready and get you out of here, I've' got to get home and eat my dinner". Probably not his exact words but close enough. He was rushing to get my paperwork signed and didn't offer until I asked him to supply me with information about what exactly I need to dos since this is my first smog failure. What topped things off was the no free retest that MOST other smog stations offer. He was only going to offer me half off if I came back within 15 days. It turns out after taking my car to a very honest smog and repair station that I only needed a replacement vacuum hose that cost only $5.00 including labor which actually became $10.00 because I gave him a $5.00 tip. Thanks Valley Auto Repair Center! I was going to take it to a dealer because i figured the hose size was a specific size. I did take it back to Abetter because I don't want to go somewhere else and pay full price, and passed the smog the second time around.But if the gentleman would have been more helpful and informative without making me feel like I was a burden to him, I would have had a much better experience. I'm going to give this place 2 stars and unfortunately they have lost my business as well as others in my family possibly forever. DON'T GO HERE!!! IF YOU ARE IN A HURRAY!! They leave you car running for 50 minutes on the machine before they test it (with the probe in the tail pipe). This way your vehicle has a chance to load up and not burn clean. The tech smogged two other vehicles while ours sat idling on the machine. The tech asked us if we had come here first. My husband said no, went to breakfast then right back home (which is one mile from our house). Then went to the smog station 45 minutes later. The tech then told us it had high hydrocarbons (which happens after your car idles for 50 minutes on the machine!) My husband then asked how can you have a honest test if you let the car idle for 50 minutes before running the test? The tech couldn't or wouldn't answer the question. My husband then said to the tech retest the vehicle. Our vehicle passed with flying colors even after all that. Do not patronize this establishment. read more

Was a customer for 20+ years but the business is under new ownership. Took the vehicle in and was told it did not pass the test, and advised to seek a costly consultation elsewhere. Did so, and was advised there was nothing wrong with the vehicle, it should have passed, and the problem was obviously with the test/equipment. Was also informed that industry standard provides for a complimentary re-test. After all, had already wasted money on the evaluation that was utterly unnecessary. Upon return, the owner was rude, belligerent, obnoxious, dishonest, and completely unethical. His behavior was so egregious that his humiliated employee apologized profusely for his behavior and treatment of us. I will NEVER patronize this business again. Consider yourself warned! read more

Been going here for almost 20 years with good experience up until this trip. New owners and new prices. I will never return to this place and wouldn't recommend anybody to get vehicles smog tested here as there are plenty of other choices in town. The worst experience and greatest rip off ever! And, they lied about the $98 dollar fee... quoted me $53 over the phone! I called to inquire re. how much a smog check would be for my 1999 vehicle, and the nice sounding receptionist told me $58, and that if I did not pass I would not pay. That was relatively in line with other shops, so I trusted their name and what I was told. Also, I said I had a $20 discount that I found on line, and she said they would honor that. Well, I drove from Galt to Lodi, only to discover the opposite of what I was told. Only, I figured I simply wanted to get the smog check accomplished, so I agreed to the $68 dollar fee. When I questioned the "nice" lady, she said their normal rate is $79, plus the $8 for the sticker and other fees. So, my "discount" was still more than the originally quoted price. She said she did not recall quoting me $53, so I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere with her. I must have been too tired to have been thinking clearly, for I normally would have simply asked for my vehicle back at that point. But, no... I allowed them to do the work. After waiting more than 30 minutes, they said my vehicle paperwork was ready. It was then that I was informed that they were going to give me a $10 discount, since they could NOT complete the work, as I had just had a new battery installed the day before. At the outset of the work, I was never informed about any potential problems with a reading if my battery was new! Ya think that would be one of the first questions a shop like that would ask those of us who do not have an automotive background! That was only the beginning of the "bait and switch!" They then informed me that I could bring the vehicle back to them for a second check for only another $26 once I had driven the vehicle for 150 miles, since my battery was new, and the computer in the vehicle needed a chance to gain sufficient information. When I asked her why I should have to pay for a lack of completed assessment when she had informed my that if I didn't pass I would not have to pay, she said she would have never said that to me, since NO shops do that any longer. Really? Once out in my vehicle, I called Galt Smog, and they said I would be able to have a second assessment with them for free if my vehicle did not pass!!! So, I let the "nice" lady know of my dissatisfaction, and she simply just completed my credit card transaction of $58. As, I got in my vehicle, the mechanic who had "worked" on my vehicle (a rough looking man in his early 60s) called out to me as he was just getting out of another vehicle that I needed to drive the vehicle more. He said that with kind of an attitude. In response, I decided to ask him if it was normal for a customer to have to pay for not receiving a full diagnosis. He evidently did not take kindly to my inquiry (though I was very polite to him), so he abruptly asked me if I would like to know what he thought of my question? It was then he informed me that he was in fact the owner of the shop. I said I was only inquiring, to which he replied that he could care less, and did I know what it cost for him to keep his doors open for business, and that he was not simply offering his services for free. When I mentioned that I had contacted another shop to inquire into their practices (pass or do not pay), he simply became even more snide and threatening. For a moment, I felt he might take a swing at me, as he was closing into my personal space, and raising his voice, while becoming ever more demeaning in his tone. I then simply indicated that I was offering some feedback into my level of satisfaction as a customer. He bluntly stated that he could not care less about customer satisfaction or feedback!!! At that point, it was clear that I was dealing with an irrational individual, who supposedly finds it hard to gain new customers. Gee... I can't see why! So, if you have not been insulted in a while, had someone get in your face to tell you, the customer, that you are an idiot and of no concern or consequence to him as a business owner, and want to walk away with nothing completed on your vehicle in terms of smog, and be lied to about the $89 fee for a smog check, then by all means you have found the right place. However, if you are looking for quality service and to be treated with respect as a customers, you would do well to stay far away from "abettersmog" in Lodi. read more

Definitely had the worst experience of any smog shop it was ridiculous my van passed emissions perfect with no issues but they wouldn't pass it because of a visual because of a vacuum line from the canister to the intake that was so easily accessible I fixed in less than three minutes and took it to an honest station. Been going here for years with good results, but ownership has changed hands, and it has really gone down hill. The shop was understaffed on the day I was there. The tech was also acting as the receptionist. Smog check was ok, but it took a while to get to my car, and the worst part was the billing. There was a bait and switch. When I called on the phone, I was quoted a much lower price for my car; then when I arrived the tech didn't provide an estimate before he did the smog check. Then when the test was over, the tech raised the price $30.00. This shop is not recommended based on poor operation and unfair pricing. After going to this place for nearly 20 years, I will have my smog checks done some place else in the future. read more

Being new in lodi, I was sceptical about a lot of places around here and thank goodness for yelp. So I get on here to find a smog place in lodi, and I come across this place. There was only 1 revieiew but I called anyways. The lady that answered the phone was very nice and she quoted me $58. So I go in a couple of days later to get my bimer smogged and I got to say I was very happy with their service, and $58 and 40 mins later I was out with my certificate. Good place and fast.
