Working with him, however, was a completely different story. He was rude, righteous and phenomenally disrespectful. When I spoke with our contractor about the experience, he said Bill has a reputation for demeaning women and that his (the contractor's) wife, who manages their business, refuses to work with him directly due to chronic mistreatment. While the rest of the world is living in the 21st century, this particular engineer is stuck in a time warp where women don't have the right to vote, never mind own property. Holy smokes. Buyer beware.

Initially, my experience with this company was not unpleasant, and when I was asked to fill out a Zillow review on the realtor agent, I did. In my honest and overall positive review, I mentioned that one area for improvement was that it wasn't until after my offer on a third house was already accepted that I was sent an Exclusive Right to Buy Agreement, which outlined an unusual commission fee that I, as a buyer, was responsible for (the commission from the seller was simply not enough for this company). At this point, since my offer was already accepted, I did not want to risk losing the house by rejecting the agreement the realtor agent just sent me, I signed the agreement and paid the extra commission fee. If the commission fee was disclosed ahead of time -- that is, if I was given the chance to make an informed decision about whether or not to proceed with the agent's service before my offer got accepted, I would not have proceeded with the company, but they really left me no choice but paying them more than just the commission from the seller. After receiving her review on Zillow, the realtor agent immediately reached out to me and offered me a refund on the extra commission fee as a compensation for her mistake. However, 5 days afterwards when I reached out again, she said she was sorry and could not refund me because her boss would not authorize it. Overall, not disclosing costs ahead of time or failing to fulfill promises on a refund represented rather disappointing service to their clients. I reached out to Lillian hoping that this matter could have better resolved, but instead of offering solutions to my dissatisfaction, I got patronized and more lectures on why agents are paid on commissions. Again, I am truly grateful for their service in my first home purchase, but I would not do business with this company again.

Hawthorne Land Surveying Services put these questions to bed. Chad was always professional, personable, respectful and easy to work with. After discussing the workscope of the project, he required very little direction for moving forward. His prices were very reasonable. Chad was always prompt in his communications. He informed us when he would visit or if he needed to reschedule. He kept us up to date on the progress of the project and was amenable to changing the workscope as needed. Chad would readily answer any questions. He explained basic surveying information to us patiently and in detail (it was admittedly a surprising pleasure to learn and appreciate a part of the world that always been there in front of us, but that we did not see or understand). We also appreciated his honesty. If he definitively knew the answer to a question, he stated it. If there was ambiguity, he laid out the options. Perhaps above all else, I felt like he took the time for us to understand and appreciate what we were paying for and what the other options were. He was clearly looking out for our best interest. In our final meeting, he walked the entire property with us and made sure we understood where the stakes were (lots of thickets in the wetlands) and how they were notated.
