Aamanns Deli in Copenhagen
Bruce K.

Wow. Definitely one of the better meals that I had in my time in Copenhagen was our stop here on the food tour. Our tour guide took care of the ordering and the arrangements, but the drinking and eating was all on me. With an organic beer, we were presented with four small slices of rugbrød with different toppings. Avocado with a lemon cream, organic boiled egg with pickled onions, chicken salad with lettuce and bacon, sliced sirloin with bearnaise and fried onions. OMG, they were all awesome. Delicious. Fabulous. Like I said, one of the better meals in all of my time in CPH.

Items Selected: Eggs with Smoked Salmon, Raw and Pickled Fennel, Tarragon Emulsion, Rye Crumbs Grilled Sirloin, Bearnaise Cream, Baked Tomatoes, Pickled Cucumber, Crispy Potato Queen Victoria Cheese, Strawberry Marmalade, Vanilla, Roasted Almonds Told that a visit to Copenhagen without eating Smørrebrød would be sacrilege, the open-face Sandwich on Rye a staple of Danish culture and seemingly sold at no less than three stores on every block in the city, the question became exactly *where* to taste this national delicacy, the name Aamann's Etablissement frequently brought up based on ingredient quality. Originally opened in 2006 as a Take Away Counter, owner Adam Aamann gaining notoriety over the ensuing years thanks to a focus on making many of the restaurant's ingredients including Creams and Marmalades as well as Schnapps and Vinegars in house, it was after lunch elsewhere that a visit was paid to Aamann's before taking the bus to Louisiana Museum of Art in Humlebæk, a twenty minute wait at the Etablissement circumvented by walking next door to Aamann's Deli & Take Away where a slightly smaller menu is offered to go, though there too seating was completely filled with diners speaking exclusively Danish. Clearly as popular as rumor would suggest, Smørrebrød offered between 50-60DKK with an extra five added for dining in, it was after a few minutes perusing the menu that a young server approached from where he was busy making sandwiches with another staff member, the request for three 'pieces' at a cost of 180DKK quoted as 'just a few minutes' with a branded box and bag quickly packed up and taken to a small table on the outside pavement. Offering just cold Sandwiches to-go, pan fried Fish and warm Pate sold as dine-in only options along with a demi-size 4-piece combo chosen by the kitchen for 155DKK, it was with intentions to try Seafood, Beef and something sweet that the sampling started off with hardboiled Eggs and Smoked Salmon topped in Fennel plus Tarragon Cream, the Fish unfortunately thicker and more 'firm' than expected with anise notes of both Fennel and Tarragon overwhelming everything but the Bread beneath them. Varying the menu seasonally, though certain signatures only change a bit, the next Smørrebrød tasted featured thinly sliced Grass-Fed Beef topped in dots of Bearnaise Cream, Baked Tomatoes, Pickles and Potato strings, the Meat itself slightly sinewy but well-complimented by everything around it while the Queen Victoria with Strawberry Marmalade, a hint of Vanilla and crushed Almonds was fine, the makings of a Cheese Plate on Rye, but no greater than the sum of its individual ingredients.

Very good smørrebrød, although not my favorite in Copenhagen. (That would be Schonnemann.) I came for an early lunch and did the smørrebrød tasting, which included beef, avocado, salmon (off menu), and eggs. The beef and salmon were my favorites, followed by the egg, and then the avocado (which I thought I was going to love, but actually wasn't that crazy about). It's not overly cheap, but it seems like that's the case with this class of food more generally. Regardless, pretty solid spot.

If you want to eat here be sure to make a reservation, otherwise your only option is take-away (which will actually save you a little money). The food is as delicious as it is beautiful. Be sure to get one of the homemade beers; the mash from the beer is used in the bread so everything goes together really nicely.

Smoked salmon full-sized smorrebrod and marinated herring smorrebrod from tasting menu

I recommend going for the smorrebrod tasting menu, which is 4 smaller open-faced sandwiches of the kitchen's choice - this way you get to taste more of Aamanns delicious smorrebrod combinations. I ordered the tasting menu - on the day I went it was herring, beef tartare, cooked beef, and pork - and a full sized smoked salmon smorrebrod. This was enough food for a light lunch for 2 people. Each one was delicious, but I especially liked the herring, salmon, and beef tartare. All the smorrebrod have lots of ingredients on each of them. Our waitress was so nice too! Something to note is they stop doing seated service and switch to take-away only at some point between lunch and dinner - not sure when so be sure to check their hours if you are set on a sit-down lunch here. The deli part of Aamanns is right next to a fancier restaurant by the same business - if you're looking for the smorrebrod place it's the one on the right side if you are facing the restaurant. They also charge a tiny additional percentage on credit card purchases (something like 1.75% of the DKK bill) - but it's so small that it's almost insignificant. Highly recommend this place!

Stop by on 5/21/18 for lunch and was told without a reservation, they had no space. I have to say they only have room for about 10 people and so we did take away. They have 4 tables outside where one can eat and that's what we did. The Danish love their open faced sandwiches and that's what we had. During our trip to Copenhagen, we went to about 3 places and had open faced sandwiches. I do have to say that this was the best place due to all the fresh ingredients they use. They are a little more expensive but we save 5 kronars on each sandwich by taking it to go.

salmon, herring, chicken salad smørrebrød, ginger juice and lemonade (?)

Cap Horn - My gravlaks (smoked salmon) open face sandwich

This restaurant is on "Restaurant Row" in the Nyhavn area. This restaurant was a recommendation,…read moreand I would recommend it too. There were outside tables, but it was a bit chilly, so we opted for the nearly deserted inside restaurant. We had a table near the window, so it was a great view. The restaurant was nicely decorated and the service was very friendly. I ordered the gravlax open-faced sandwich, which is smoked salmon (very similar to lox) on an excellent sour dough bread. I opted to skip the mustard sauce, but the sandwich was perfect. My wife had the potato open-faced sandwich, which consisted of new potatoes, organic rye bread, lemon mayonnaise (romaleid), fried onions and pickled pearl onions. She really enjoyed it, along with her Spritz drink. Denmark seems to be one of those countries, where you cannot order tap water. Fair enough. However, our water consisted of an open carafe (which I'm sure was tap water), for which we were charged 50 Krona ($8). This seems high for tap water.

Staff had a "I don't wanna be here attitude"... we were definitely a bother. Went for the burger,…read morecouldn't add cheese, staffed stated food was not made there, so no modifications. Settled on fried fish and shrimp croquettes (ok). We knew it was a tourist trap, but we were looking for better service. Great location on a beautiful day, if not for the excitement of being in the city... the staff could have destroyed it. On vacation, looking to order a drink, I was advised they only had what was on the menu... mind you, as you look around, the establishment next door was rocking a full bar! In my opinion, pick a trap with friendly inviting and help staff... not unless you like it that way!
