Turns out not only did I need a new fob (just the plastic part because no upselling here, so I replaced my already broken spare, too) but also an ignition switch, which Mark explained to me in detail, using photographs, because he didn't want me to think I was being taken (I didn't and I wasn't). Asked who they could recommend to do it, and he said: We can. And they did. In under 45 minutes and for under $230 in total. I feel so lucky not to be stuck in the mountains somewhere unable to start my car (knock wood) or searching the ground for a key that fell out of the fob. However, American Garage Door & Key completely fixed in an hour what other repair people couldn't seem to solve. Our garage door is tracking smoothly and humming right along. The repairman that came told me the seals were fine and also told me the springs were old and showed signs of impending breakage as they were not uniform on the bar they occupy. His quote seemed high, $1850.00, but we are new to Portland and have found things to be more expensive here. We wrote a check for that amount and after the tech. left I searched the internet for costs to remove old and install new springs for a 16' x 7' garage door. I found multiple examples of that repair for almost 1/3rd the price I paid. I did pay extra for springs that the tech told me had a longer warranty. I found it interesting that the tech., Dan R., has his snapshot on the review pages of American Garage Door and Key identifying him as The Manager. We were not given a receipt or warranty statement. I attempted to contact the business by phone and email to discuss correcting what I felt was a mistake in billing but got no response. Today I called the same business again to discuss changing the top 16' panel to one with windows. The same technician Dan R. arrived in the late afternoon, driving the same White newer Dodge Ram pick-up without any advertising for his business i met him at the door and recognized him immediately. He is tall and thin, a darker skinned young man with curly black hair on his head and beard. I asked him if we hadn't met before and he stated he did not think so and pulled out his cellphone to check for our address in previous conversations but stated he was unable to find it. He asked to see the door opened and took a photo. Again I asked if he hadn't been to our house before and he insisted that he did not think so. Our home is easily recognized as we have no plants or trees in front and one side of the property has artificial turf which looks like a healthy natural lawn and the other 1/2 is all grey pavers. I asked him the name of his company and he stated "Speedy Garage Doors". I had to ask him to repeat himself as his accent (he told me he was Jewish) made it difficult for me to understand. I thanked him for coming out and went inside to attempt to learn more about this business in hopes I could speak with someone about the cost of his previous visit. I have proof that we wrote a check for the first visit. The tech is easily identifiable. I'd appreciate being contacted by American Garage Door and Key. I'll check back here for a response.

Key fob go to Harry's Key Service on 117th. Specifically the 117th location does vehicle fobs,…read moreothers do not. They've got high tech machines that copy the key part flawlessly. They have several very kind and informative employees. It turns out, the key copying is only part of the trick for the key fobs, as (at least my) cars have a radio sensor on the ignition that checks if the fob part is approved (programmed). If the key part matches for my car, it'll turn radio on but won't kick ignition over unless the fob part is programmed. In my car's case this was a set of steps such as insert old key, turn on for some seconds, turn off, insert new key, turn on off several times, then it programs it in the car. The people at Henry's explained all of this to me made it very clear that I am welcome to Google and try and do the fob programming myself to save money, or they can try it, or they can order a fob that's more reliable than the flimsy Amazon fob, and if none of those work it'll take an actual dealership unfortunately to get the thing to program. And, they have TONS of key designs to get inexpensive copies of your house keys!
