Let me preface by saying a lot of the reviews below encompass the initial repair experience of the job. At face value it appeared that Jeff is honest, reasonable in price, professional, to me this is very important and I felt rest assured with his easy going charm. He had performed a repair on a new home that we bought and found that the chimney needed some work which the sellers we obligated to pay for. So as satisfied customers we decided to have him install 2 gas log installation, upstairs and downstairs. Once it was complete we were happy to test out our new gas log installations and only using the fireplace the second time we started to notice an extreme amount of soot buildup which was cause for concern. I left several voicemail's with Jeff with no returned calls, and then texted him to which he responded: "Its not dangerous just need to take a horse brush every once and awhile when its off of course and it will come right off" Taking his recommendation we used a horse brush and found that while it removed the top layer of soot, the gas logs were permanently stained. We had asked him if maybe the logs were causing a blockage from gas escaping, from a quick google search on the issue and received no response. I then took it upon myself to contact the manufacturer of the logs and they confirmed that improper placement of logs will create the soot buildup. Two days later, I sent another text to check in and finally a response: "...I am officially overwhelmed with work please follow the instructions I gave you" I then told him the horse brush did not work and no responses after that. Fast forward to the end of January 2017 it was really windy in my area and noticed the chimney cap was not secure and was squeaking throughout the day and night. I texted him of our concern that it may fall on my neighbors car or hurt a passerby and 5 days later received a response again he said he was overwhelmed with work and that he could come in a few days which his time did not work for me so I asked to reschedule. It has been 15 days since this text and still have not received a response from Jeff, in addition I have left several messages. I normally do not write reviews but when people spend hard earned money on an investment to their home they expect at the very least workmanship is warranted. In this particular job, Jeff had warranted the work for 5 years, which literally means nothing but smoke and mirrors. While Jeff might be friendly and seemly knowledgeable, think twice before using his services. read more

I think the company has good service. Jeff and Greg were responsive did an admirable job on a chimney repair. My review is not based as much on their work, but rather the attention I didn't get. In addition to cleaning, he painted the inside of the fireplace, Installed new pan, sand, fire rocks and made a new modern fireplace! I highly recommend Jeff at A-1 Chimney Service. I called him during the end of the rainy season. It was a heavy season and my chimney had a missing piece I didn't know about which was causing a leak down my interior slider door. He came the very next day, and stayed extra long to get the job done for me before the rain was to come again in just two days. He literally worked until the sun went down to get it done. Jeff was very friendly and knows the ropes very well- he exudes confidence, with good reason. He came out to handle a small repair and "level 2" (for homeowner's insurance/National Fire Protection Association recommended) for my gas fireplace. He was very thorough and noted that the chimney needed to be swept as well- no pressure, very factual, I really didn't feel like it was an upsell. He even invited me to take a look myself. He was able to handle it in the same visit. He offered me a deal on the whole package in light of the extra work, which made me feel good- he even threw in some extra coloured fireplace glass as a courtesy, which really made the existing white glass pop! What more could ask from a chimney sweep! It's New Years holiday weekend, I have a house full of guests all hoping to sit by the fire and enjoy a long weekend and the smoke is backing up. I called every sweep in OC and not only did he answer the line at 9pm forwarded to his cell while on the roof at another job, he was the only one willing to work this weekend. Although he got a bit delayed by rain, he worked through it. He stuck incredibly close to estimate, was clean and efficient. He gave a nice lesson on the history of chimneys to my kids and even wore the cool hat. Generally I avoid services with the name A-1 or AAA because they are just looking for the quick hits on 411. I called him to install a chimney screen and change the fireplace gas pipe for fire glass but he told me that there was no reason to charge me for the screen since there seemed to be one there from the builder. Jeff is a small business owner and really cares about doing a good job. He is super helpful and personable and will do the best job possible to fix your problem. Called Jeff in the morning and he came out that same afternoon. Needed a couple of caps and dampers fixed. I thought both dampers were stuck but Jeff was honest and stated only one had an issue. Jeff is a chimney sweep and fireplace inspector. He knows everything about fireplaces, flues and chimneys. We had him prepare one of our fireplaces to be closed off - he capped the gas stub and placed a cap on the top of the chimney to prevent rain, birds and other things from entering the chimney. The other fireplace was very dirty and smelled of smoke. He cleaned the firebox and chimney, and deodorized the inside of the firebox. No more smoke smell in the house! He painted the firebox with high heat paint, which makes it look brand new again. He replaced our single gas pipe with a 3 pipe gas pipe for future installation of glass crystals. He cleaned up everything and did an excellent job at a fair price. read more

Jeff was able to schedule work on my chimney very quickly and did a fabulous job. He worked really hard to open the damper which was rusted shut. This saved me lots of $$ as his hard work meant I didn't have to replace the unit. Very affordable and he emailed me before and after pics of the masonry work he did on top of the chimney.
