A1 Bed & Biscuit Review - In loving memory of Duke I strongly urge anyone considering taking their dogs to A1 Bed & Biscuit to reconsider immediately! On Saturday, March 30th, 2024, I took my 9-year-old, St. Bernard, Duke, and my 11-year-old, English Bulldog, Brutus, for their monthly grooming visit. I was called as I was en route to pick up my dogs from the groomer. Laurie, the groomer, said that Duke had been panting excessively and could not stand up as his rear legs continued to give out. Laurie told me they put down rugs and towels to help Duke stand. When I arrived, Duke was in the hallway in complete distress. I picked up my dogs and called my wife to fill her in. Once I stopped home to drop off Brutus, we immediately went to Metropolitan Emergency Animal Hospital. Duke was taken back right away. The veterinarian broke the news to us that Duke suffered a heat stroke and had a temperature of 106, and needed to have a breathing tube inserted to stay alive as they ran further tests. Duke's bloodwork came back completely normal, and there were no underlying issues. Our son joined my wife and me while waiting in the private room. The veterinarian returned to update us on the side effects of heat stroke. Duke was in distress, and recovery was not likely. We were left with the difficult decision of putting our sweet baby boy down. Now wholly devastated, we returned home without our Duke. Laurie, his A1 Bed & Biscuit groomer called for an update. I told her that Duke was gone. I then received a random test message later that evening from what turned out to be Laurie's cell phone. Laurie expressed sincere compassion, which at the time seemed reassuring. Laurie even offered to pay our vet bill and stated how much she loved our dogs. I replied that it was not necessary as I, of course, thought this was a genuine act of kindness. On Sunday morning, I received another text from Tillie, an A1 Bed & Biscuit staffer. Again, she expressed her sympathy. Something felt off, though, as I reread her text messages and tried processing what had occurred. My wife and I discussed how this could happen and why it happened. We decided to ask Laurie some questions. It turns out Duke was left under a fan, which was different from what fans had been used on Duke in the past. Laurie admitted to talking it over with Tillie and said the fan motor generates heat. In my opinion, this is the only logical reason for Duke to have a heat stroke. I asked Laurie when she noticed Duke panting and his rear legs giving out. She answered it wasn't until she brought Duke over to do his final brush and nail trim. Laurie assumed Duke must have just been in pain. Laurie notified me that the fan had been taken out of service to prevent this from happening again, even though there had been no other incident. My final reply to Laurie was, that is a good thing, but it will never bring our Duke back! Her response: I'm so sorry. We believe they knew what happened, and if we hadn't asked the questions, we would never have gotten the answers. STAY CLEAR OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT if you LOVE your dogs! read more

We gave this place two tries. But never again after what I learned about their process. Skip to the bottom if you want the quick advice. But here was our experience... The first time, we boarded our 7 mo puppy over night. We brought a toy, extra food, and his bed. We picked him up the next day and none of our stuff was given back to us which makes me think they just put it away somewhere and he didn't actually have it with him in his cage. We had to return to get it and it took them awhile to find it. To be fair, they do have a sign saying they are not responsible for lost items. Whatever though, we got it back anyways. It was our dogs first time at a new place so we were curious how he did. 3 people were standing there and they all said he did great, he could come back anytime, and they reminded us to get him fixed before he turned a year. We were pleased. We took him back two weeks later but just for doggy play group this time for the day. I had a very painful medical issue and just needed this puppy to be tired. Well.. he wasn't. We picked him up and asked how he did this time. They said "well he didn't play with any dogs because he's not fixed." We said "I thought he didn't have to be neutered until 1 year". They said "oh, that is true, I'm so sorry and then proceeded to make us pay." I was super mad because not only am I in a lot of pain, but I also have a 7 mo puppy that was caged all day. I asked if his age was in his file and they said they do not keep files of their dogs (red flag!) and a manager would have to call me the next day to apologize for their misunderstanding. Okay.. no problem just probably a mistake. We were frustrated but everyone makes mistakes, right? Well the manager (Tilly) called the next day and was extremely defensive right off the bat with very snappy remarks before I could even explain what happened. She admittedly said that she was not there that day but then went on to change the story and say how our dog was not allowed to play with other dogs because he's "too crazy." He "runs around and plays with dogs" She said she witnessed this herself the first time. Okay yeah, he's a puppy? Also they currently have a naughty list display of dogs for the holidays highlighting a doggy day care dog who "body slams every dog" but our dog is to crazy for running round? I asked why the 5 different people I spoke to between the first/second visit never explained this to us and continuously told us he was doing great and could come back? She said she didn't know but he was "for sure not allowed to play with other dogs." I asked how they remember specifics about each dog without a record system and she said "by memory" . Oh, she also said they have about 60 dogs each day. 60 dogs by memory. Okay. Well, Tilly, if you're the only one who knew our dog was "a hazard to other dogs" how was this the reason why he didn't play with the other dogs yesterday? And why would your team admit default and explain they made a mistake if it was on purpose? The story does not add up. And our dog has been welcomed my many other doggy day cares without issue. We were really hoping to love this place because it was close and our dog's doggie bestie goes there however, I do not recommend this location for your precious pup. Especially if you have a high needs animal. The lack of record system would make me very nervous. They also have a terrible service recovery system when they do mess up and a manager who lies about what happens when she wasn't even there? Mistakes happen. But just admit when you make one, it's that easy. If you do choose to use this place, I would double confirm all specifics about your dog each and every visit. I read another review about how a dogs special medication got mixed up with another dog with the same name and that dog was hospitalized. Don't expect to get any accurate updates on how your dog did. Some places give you nice reports on who your dog played with and what they could work on, not this place. Or maybe verify how your dog did with Tilly herself since she knows everything with her super memory and makes zero mistakes read more

First, a little history. We had used A1 a couple times in the past. I always found the $1 addition fee for "playing with the dog" to be a little concerning but always paid for socialization. I believe that this establishment has good days but when things go wrong, it results from poor management and procedural control, which amounted to excuses, lies to cover their tracks and a lack of communication and record keeping by under qualified caregivers. June, 2018 we decided to vacation in Cozumel, MX. Winston's medical shot records were updated and faxed to A1. The day prior to dropping him off, I called to confirm boarding and to let A1 know I was bringing his food as he suffered from food allergies (grain). I also asked for them to groom and cut his nails prior to picking him up. After all, we like to tell Winston that he is going away to a posh Spa! lol. On the morning of drop off, Winston and his food were given to the young lady who was doing the receiving. This is also a good time to mention that the girls working and answering the phones seemed awfully young, perhaps high school to 18 years old as they were eager to please, and seemed unseasoned in communicating details and facts. In fact, one girl looked 12, which I later find out that it was the manager's daughter. More on this later. The Mexican adventure had begun! We arrived in Cozumel on 6/25 and without concern for all the pets we left behind. On 7/1, I received a phone call which I had quickly declined as I was boarding a SCUBA boat and did not want to take the call. Upon returning, I revisited the number and discovered it was A1 as I copy and pasted it into google. I immediately called back and a young lady answered as I inquired the nature of the phone call. The young girl explained that Winston had "hot spots" on his neck and that they had contacted another dog named Winston's owner by mistake. Of course I was confused. The young lady explained that a day ago, they had groomed him and it may have been from the shampoo. I was even more confused as any professional groomer uses PH balanced shampoo. The young lady explained that they were taking him to the vet and they would let me know how he was doing. I asked how large were these "hot spots", using a quarter as a reference, and the girl said about about a quarter size and that there were 3 of them. I kindly thanked them for responding as quick as they did and I will be waiting for their phone call. On 7/2, a person (the manager) called and left a message explaining that they were in the car taking him to the vet (a day later for an allergic reaction??) and that she apologized for the confusion but that they had "bathed the wrong Winston". I was confused as I wanted him bathed! I immediately contacted A1 and spoke to Tilly, the manager. I was told that the previous person I spoke to yesterday had been mistaken that the wounds were all over his neck and they believed that it was due to an allergic reaction. I explained that he has food allergies but not from shampoo use. The morning after returning to Ohio, my 2 sons were excited to pick up Winston. Upon first sight and to my amazement, Winston looked like a shrapnel war victim! I was enraged and confused to how this could have happened and to the degree of injury and response to medical care. Tilly, the manager, mentioned that she had a "bunch of goodies" to give me. The "goodies" she was referring to were his prescriptions and antibacterial ointments! Winston had bubbles all over his head and his neck was all crusted and bloody. I had paid the boarding fee, and Tilly said she was not going to charge me for the doctor fee and grooming fee. I was perplexed, as I needed time to figure out what really went wrong. I reluctantly thanked her and was given a bag of medications. When i got home, I looked over Winston and recognized the bubbles/sores as years early he exhibited the same rash feeding him grain. Ever since this allergic reaction, Winston was given the proper diet and has NEVER had an outbreak since. Interesting uh? I contacted Tilly and explained to her that someone was lying. After excuses and twisting of facts, I concluded that they mistakenly fed the other Winston MY Winston's food!! Tilly was speechless to an admission of fault of coverups and lies, conceded. Wow just think if they did this with medication and were confused over a similarity in a dog's name! I demanded that Tilly refund me the total amount as they did not care for Winston and I would also send them the vet bill in the event of continued infection. Tilly said she would contact me after the holiday. On 7/5, another manager contacted me explaining they were sorry and that they were refunding me the total amount. I will never use A1 again and it's not because of an honest mistake, but of the dishonest/deceptive way they handled it. read more

They know my dog very well there; she always gets a bath and nail trim before she comes home. Hours are a little goofy but I am glad they open on sunday so I can pick my dog up. Place needs a thorough cleaning in the customer area...I realize there are dogs in and out but a little presentation would be nice. I have never seen the kennels and they don't really want to show you...probably upsets the dogs back there but my dog always seems excited to go there. They treat the dogs nicely and have day care for dogs as well. read more

I have been taking my dog, Mazie, to A1 Bed & Biscuit for daycare for about nine months.  Since I am older and live alone, Mazie needed socialization with more people and other animals.  She has been going twice a week since she was four months old and has shown improvement in relating to others.  I was curious to see how she interacted with the other dogs and asked if I could peek through the fence to see how she was doing.  I was told that I would have to call to schedule an appointment to view her.  I thought that was strange and a red flag went up, considering I was there and Mazie was outside at the time. There were a few days when we entered the office that Mazie immediately turned around and cowered by the door wanting to leave.  When I asked If she was having any problems, I was told it was probably due to separation issues. Also, one time when I picked her up she was wet and sticky and smelled like feces.  Thank goodness I was dressed in washable clothing and could carry her, but the thought of putting her in her car seat was disgusting.  I asked why they were sending her home in that condition, and they said they would have to charge for grooming to clean her up.  I had to carry her into the house directly to the bathtub. The hours for daycare were from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  A1 has a long single lane driveway, and I had learned that the most practical time to pick up was right before 6:00 p.m.  If I went at 5:45 p.m. or 5:50 p.m. I'd run the risk of having to sit on Hosford Rd. waiting for cars exiting the parking lot to come down the driveway; or while trying to leave the parking lot, end up having to back up into the parking lot and wait for cars that had already started up the driveway.  I live less than 2 minutes away from A1 so it made sense to pick up a few minutes before 6:00.  I would walk in the office, they would open the half door to release her, I would leash her and be back to my car by 6:00.  When I would arrive, the lights would be turned off, the "closed" sign would be on the door, and the employees would be standing with their coats on. I was surprised when I arrived to pick up Mazie and was told that they had changed their hours to close at 5:45 because it was getting dark earlier.  Of course, the girl telling me this was standing in the office with her coat on, lights turned off and "closed" sign flipped.  The next time I took Mazie to daycare I happened to see the older woman who rarely smiles and asked about the closing time change.  At first, she appeared to not understand what I was talking about, but then made it clear that the time change was only for me because I always pick up after 6:00 and keep the employees late.  She even mentioned that I had come as late as 6:15, and the next time the door could be locked, and I would have to pick Mazie up the next day and be charged for boarding.  Apparently, she is being given misinformation by her employees, but there is no excuse for her rude and ill-mannered diatribe.  I have been a long-time grooming and daycare customer and have overlooked disturbing issues with A1, but this was the final straw.  I will never use or recommend them again. read more
