Automotive Authority - transmission shop, Troy, MI 48083

    Automotive Authority

    (34 reviews)

AUTOMOTIVE AUTHORITY REVIEW This shop was personally…read morerecommended to me; I really wanted to like them. However, bottom line: the issue I took my car in for was NEVER FIXED - across several visits. Nick & Tim are very nice and seemingly easy to work with; however, if the issue is never fixed, and new issues keep showing up, what's the point? VISIT 1: On 01/26/2026, I took my 2014 Subaru Outback (200k mi) because the engine was shuddering upon braking, the car then stalling itself off while driving. They test drove it and did a diagnostic, telling me what I already knew: the catalytic converter (CAT) was due to be replaced. I was not ready to commit to that repair at the time; the current issue was something new that hadn't happened previously. They couldn't find anything else wrong. They insisted fixing the CAT would surely take care of this NEW PROBLEM and offered to use an aftermarket part to lower the price. The codes were reset and I left. Less than a week later, all lights on dash turned back on. VISIT 2: Forced to make a decision between the pricey CAT repair and having to start over elsewhere, I begrudgingly agreed to the CAT replacement BELIEVING that it would, indeed, fix the problem, as I'd been told. However, within 72 hrs of this 'repair', the engine shuddering (original complaint) happened again AND it turned all the engine lights associated with the catalytic converter back on. VERY CLEARLY, the problem I brought the car in for had NOT BEEN FIXED. VISIT 3: I was told to bring it back in on a Friday evening (01/30/2026), so they could drive it cold in am to better diagnose it. They FORGOT to test drive it cold. They ran the diagnostic but still didn't know what the problem was. They cleaned out the air manifold, a GUESS as to what may help, then reset the codes. 2 weeks later: HUGE engine shudder causing a stall in traffic; all warning lights back on. Also: violent shaking on the freeway; an entirely new problem. VISIT 4 (2/20/2026): After running another diagnostic, they told me they still had no idea what was causing the initial engine shuddering/stalling issue; they literally said "It ain't broke enough yet!" for them to fix it! They said the highway shaking was caused by 2 control arms needing to be replaced, a safety issue that should be fixed immediately but that I had not been alerted to at any previous visit. Every time I picked up my car, I was assured that it had been vigorously test-driven before it was approved to leave, yet new problems showed themselves each time I had it back. After having the control arms replaced, I was again assured that the car was ready to go, no visible/diagnosable problems present, (save the ORIGINAL COMPLAINT which was 'not broken enough to fix'). I had given them about $3000 of my money at this point; the ORIGINAL COMPLAINT yet to be fixed! Here, I vowed that I would go elsewhere should the original problem repeat itself again. Clearly, Automotive Authority had no intention of actually fixing the original complaint! Immediately upon leaving that time, I knew something was VERY WRONG with the brakes. I thought "No way would they let me leave the shop with brakes about to fail; I must be mistaken". I KNOW the brakes were not in that condition when I dropped the car off. There was a tactile and audible grinding of the brakes from the moment I left that shop after the 3rd unnecessary repair. On March 3, 2026, the brakes completely cut out WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I had to use the paddle shifters on my Subaru to get home safely. What had they done to my brakes?!? I dropped the car off with normal brakes, lots of wear left, and after picking it up from an unrelated repair, the brakes were worn to the point of failing. I have no answers. But, they certainly didn't test drive it before giving it back to me; there was no way they could have missed it! After $3000 already paid for unnecessary repairs, I was not going to pay AA to fix it again. I reached out one last time to tell AA the brakes had died while driving and to ask if they would take any parts back that they sold to me and I didn't need. I never heard from them again. I got ONLY $900 trade for that Subaru and had to buy a new car in the end. My advice: never trust these guys without a 2nd opinion...or, just don't bother at all.

So these guys are real class act. I got my transmission serviced here and my rear diff as well…read more They showed me how nasty my rear diff was. And they also told me my trans fluid was looking very nice but this was a used car so I wanted to start fresh and change all fluids. So waited 3 hours for my car to be done after I spoke with some one there earlier that day and was told it would take 30 minutes tops. Not only was I late for a very important meeting but also had to go grab cash to pay for my service. I was told one price when I walked in and got charged more after my car was done. I was just trying to get out of there fast. While watching my car have service done, it looked like they had 3 teenage kids working there. One was working on my rear diff. He attempted to drain the oil out smooth but got it all over the floor and all over himself. Witch was funny. Then he put the diff cover back on without a gasket.... :-/. I did not want to say anything till he was going to put the oil in. But since I was looking at him one of the other co workers came by and noticed right before I was going to say something. So that was scary. A few days later.. My car starts to jerk on the freeway and making grinding noise when moving from park to gear in the morning. I took it back and they said they forgot to mention that my oil pan had metal shavings in it.. I do not recall this what so ever. I only saw the rear diff being changed. So took it to the dealer and this shop put the wrong trans fluid and did not inform me of my trans needing repair.. Witch I would have of done at the time of my oil flush. Well now I have a broken trans and this shop to blame. DO NOT COME HERE. Shady shady people. Would not even help me out with taking care of this. They want to charge me the price of a new trans to rebuild me old trans.. Very very shady. Will never come here again and I will always talk down on this company. Oh yes, forgot to mention they also had 3 customers who had been waiting for their cars longer than I had to wait for my car while I was there. And when I came back for them to look at my car again, one of the same guys who was there the first time I was there was also complaining about some work they did that day.. At the dealer they pulled my tans out and said who ever worked on this tans must have been high on something. The filter was not on right and the oil pan was not even tight.. Wow what a piece of work.. Stay away from these thrives. Wish I could give them no stats or negative stars.

EVERYONE we met with was exceptional friendly and did not rush through explaining the services needed. I might also add that the appointment was made two hours before their closing time and on a Saturday at that. In a day and time where customer service is not always at the forefront of concern for businesses, Car fix seems to still value it. Highly recommend. Mr.& Mrs. Jerry Williams

Car Fix Troy - October 2025…read more VALUE - Highly Suspicious & Questionable. Hourly rate for service $200 per hour - You pay for overhead. I'm deeply disappointed with my recent experience at Car Fix Troy. I brought my vehicle in due to an ABS warning light. The salesman looked up the dealership model, found what the cost of a new replacement part was, to use that as the "Shock Price" in my case a new ABS Module was $1800. However, Car Fix of Troy offered a "deal" at over $300. That sounded promising--until another employee admitted the job should've taken no more than 1.5 hours and explained that I was being charged $200 per hour. I knew something did not seem fair. When I protested, explaining that is unusually high for labor - $200 per hour, the salesman promised me before I approved and left my care with them, he assured me they'd revisit the labor charges. He justified this with vague references to overhead and reprogramming costs, saying he had to purchase programming access from GMC. The job was supposed to take five hours (according to the salesperson) but stretched overnight due to "reprogramming issues". I wasn't contacted until well after the promised time. But, the next day, he was cold and dismissive and decided he would give me $50 off. I was actually charged $200/hour for labor totaling $400. He took $50 off the cost of the ABS Module. In my previous encounters, they had me run SNAP financing. From that time, it felt like my pricing was based more on my financial approval than the actual work. Every time I've brought a car for attention by Car Fix of Troy, I've had to return for additional repairs. I allowed them to do other work on this car that was over $4,000 initially. However, when their next quote was over $5,000, conveniently aligned with my approved financing and spotless payment history, I declined. These experiences have eroded all trust. I won't be returning.
