It seems like Stephanie's tours are kind of hit-or-miss but the Bread and Chocolate tour was more on the miss side. All of the food we tried was delicious, but there was very little history woven into the tour, much of it post 1975 or about the architecture of the neighborhood, which was a little repetitive and not that compelling. She clearly knows a decent amount about Santa Fe, but it was really not built into this tour-- I felt like I had to drag details out of her that might have been better covered in another tour. And the places we stopped did not have much historically to recommend them (that she shared, anyway), they were just tasty food. Given that we never had a bad meal in Santa Fe, I think we would have fared just fine on our own. It was off-putting that she asked for tips at the beginning of the tour, when the tour was quite expensive to begin with and the fees/taxes that are part of the cost do not count toward her $150 "minimum" for doing the tour. Stephanie is very kind and friendly, but this walking tour just didn't feel like a good value. read more

Stefanie is an excellent guide, deeply knowledgable about many aspects of New Mexico history and culture. I took a Meetup group on a specially arranged Jewish Cultural Legacy tour of Santa Fe. We learned about the "conversos," the Jews who were forced to convert during the Spanish Inquisiition, who ended up in the New World, some in New Mexico. We also learned about crypto-Jews, people of Hispanic lineage who descend from conversos (many don't know they are Jewish unless they take DNA tests). We then went on to visit several sites of Jewish historical importance in the 19th and 20th centuries. Overall a great experience and very reasonably priced. read more

Wow! Stefani, the owner and guide of the Bars and Brothels tour we went on while staying in Santa Fe did not do a good job. We thought the tour sounded promising and enriching, it was neither. Tour guide met us on plaza as promised but since other group "cancelled" she raised our price and solicited for tips before we even began. This is a grown historian who claims to have her PHd and owns her own business, I guess no one ever told her not to Ask for tips. Our guide has been in Santa Fe since 1975. She told us the history of quite a few bars we walked past but unfortunately it was only the history since 1975. BORING! The tour also promised stories of brothels. Most of her stories were hearsay not too many facts and not nearly as bawdy or salacious as we hoped for. At our request we stopped at one bar on the tour where we were promptly charged TWENTY dollars each for a bourbon and coke!!!! Crazy! We walked through plenty of dark alleys that had no history therefore no one was talking. At one point she tried to take us through a locked gate in a deserted parking lot. Many of the bars we were supposed to visit were closed and our guide commented she was "glad they were closed." Bizarre since it was a bar tour. Stefani talked a lot about town politics and which bars were not successful etc. again, boring. End of tour we did tip her and ended up spending $120.00 total for something we could have done on our own, at our own pace and a lot cheaper. Stefanie's tour was an excellent peek into Santa Fe history through walking the city on foot. She started with what was to be expected in the tour so we understood that we would be walking a good distance, what we would pay, tips are appreciated, that we would be stopping in any bars we wanted and some general history. She was polite and well spoken through out. Stefanie's humor was on point and appreciated. We stopped and talked about 7-10 bars and we learned about Santa Fe history throughout. By far our favorite part of the tour were the excellent and creepy ghost stories. Stefanie is good at spinning a tale and left us perfectly questioning the existence of the spirit world. Stefanie's tour is not for someone who wants to go into each bar and drink and party. This tour is really about the history that made Santa Fe what it is today. If you are interested in a well organized, informative and interesting history tour you won't be disappointed. Stefanie went over our tour time by a half hour because she was so caring about giving us such a complete picture of Santa Fe. I would love to learn more about this fascinating city and would book her again in the future. Wear comfy walking shoes and be ready to learn. read more

There were 3 of us. We've taken other walking eating tours in other cities. Thought it was cheesy she shows up with two waters for herself in her fanny pack and didn't bring us waters. The bread part of the tour was so so. It would've been nice if she actually had pre ordered items rather than have us wait with her as if we just walked in off the street. I spent a good part of today reflecting over my experience with Stefanie. I cannot speak for those participants in my group, but I can say that we had some reservations upon reading certain online reviews. Stefanie was timely, courteous, and knowledgeable in certain areas of our tour. We did not have any issues involving her discussions of her CV or qualifications. I know this was mentioned in other reviews, but we did not have this experience. In fact, there was a mutual appreciation as our little group had an MD, JD, and MBA. There were some areas of the bread and chocolate tour worth critiquing. While I understand the need to be prompt and timely during the tour, I do not agree with jaywalking for whatever reason (to shave a few minutes of walking time, because the sidewalks are uneven, etc...). I have three young children and cannot assume every driver will be sympathetic or understanding about our crossing in the middle of the road. Secondly, I feel it is quite rude to interject personal opinions on whether we should or should not purchase additional items to eat while on the tour. This is of particular note because your tour is on a limited budget. Our guide frequently pointed out what she intended to purchase, how much she intended to purchase, and how deviating might result in additional expenses. For example, tourists beware that free water is ok but coffee and other beverages are on your own additional dime. I don't feel we need to be privy to her finances and limitations of the tour. Some discretion or preplanning might have avoided this uncomfortableness. She was a lovely conversationalist but she will limit her conversations if materials seemingly cross into subject matters included in her other tours. Reasonable? Sure. Open and forthcoming? Not so much. Finally, I might advise you to google this tour guide by name. I don't need to elaborate more than this. We were a small group of six people, three adults and three children. These are just some additional factors for you to consider when reading my review. read more

We took the Combination Santa Fe + Jewish History three-hour tour. The value for money was very good. This is a walking & listening/talking tour. Stefanie has impressive educational and professional accomplishments all of which inform her tours. We started in the Plaza. She presented information from many historical periods and perspectives. Santa Fe's role as a remote outpost in the Spanish empire was made evident. We talked about the evolving relations between the indigenous peoples and the interloping Spanish. Stefanie also gave a helpful introduction to the regional geology, a few local environmental issues, some local politics, and some regional national parkland news. On the porch of the St Francis hotel, Stefanie presented a well-researched introduction to the history of the Jews of Santa Fe. Much of the information centered on Governor Oñate. But, she distinguished well the various Jewish in-migrations, and changing nature of Jewish identity and observance in the region, up through the present day. Stefanie is very comfortable taking and answering questions, as well as listening to ideas/comments from us. Total distance walked about 1 mile. Pacing of the trip was very good for our needs, and sit-down stops were included. Overall, hard to imagine a better tour in a walking/talking format. We are glad we took this tour. read more

Our extended family of 10, ranging in age from 17 to 82, took the Ghost Tour of Santa Fe last week. Stefanie is incredibly well-informed, and well-connected in Santa Fe, so she knows a lot of stories that you might not hear on other tours. She is also intelligent and articulate, and has a PhD in History. We are a skeptical group so we appreciated that Stefanie was not melodramatic and did not try to "scare" us with the ghost stories - she simply reported the history and eye-witness accounts of what happened at various locations around the Santa Fe plaza and left it up to you to reach your own conclusions. Our group consisted of elderly seniors in wheelchairs and walkers who had to walk 2 blocks to participate in this tour, we were late because they can not walk fast. She told us to park in the parking lot which we couldn't because our van is 30 feet long and to high to enter. We had no way to contact her because she has no cell phone!! As we approached her she attacked us, with a very unprofessional and rude attitude!!! She even became more upset when we didn't have exact change. She told us it was cash only she didn't say exact change. Shouldn't she have change since this is her business? She wouldn't give us a receipt, till this day we have asked several times and still have not received a receipt. She was rushing us and has no empathy for elderly handicap people. We will never use her again!!! We would not recommend Well-Born Guide now or ever, especially if your elderly or handicap! read more

A dear friend and I delighted in the Santa Fe "Bread and Chocolate Tour" with our very talented, knowledgable and fun guide Stephanie! It was such a special occasion for our 45 yr friendship, as we were in town with our husbands to celebrate these friends' 50th anniversary. I wanted to plan something out of the ordinary for "us girls"...and we got that in spades! What a great concept for a tour! Stephanie took us to several wonderful bakeries, restaurants and chocolatiers (KAKAWA our favorite!!) to sample delightful confections and concoctions...all of them sprinkled generously with her informative tales of Native Americans, Santa Fe history, architectural facts, state and town tidbits, etc...and much of this while walking leisurely throughout beautiful "off the beaten path" residential streets and parks. We were blessed with the perfect crisp sunny October day...and with a great and gifted guide!
