The person who recommended me to go there my first time said cutting hair to Mohamed is like sushi is to Jiro. So true. Before Mohamed I liked going somewhere and chatting with the barber. But Mohamed is too engrossed in his craft for chit chat. He hums or sings along to the music playing on his laptop as he transforms you into a more handsome version of yourself. He could rent out other chairs to other people and likely make more money. But no. He wants to focus on the task at hand: cutting hair. There are no appointments. It is first-come-first-sever. Bring a book or your phone and just hang out in the modest shop, taking in the music. If you don't know what to do there are a few months-old magazines to peruse. Hanging out with people as they wait, even without talking, has a special sense of community. Five stars for many a great haircut, and so many relaxing mornings just hanging out listening to Algerian music.

Not only do the cuts make me look my best, the pleasant experience of just interacting with the great employees at Vera's Barbershop makes the trips more than worth it. I always get a great conversation from Big D, the barber, and all employees are respectful and professional. I made the mistake one time by going to a local barber in Annapolis and paid the price, literally. The cost of the hair cut I received was 75 percent higher than that at Vera's Barbershop, and I almost had to hide from my friends until I could get back to Vera's. I recommend Vera, Big D, or any of the employees at Vera's Barbershop. I've yet to see a customer not strut out of Vera's feeling on top of the world. Captain Tony

But let me tell you, the first guy took 45 min, second guy was 75 min in and still going by the time I left. The first barber (light-skinned latino) took 45 min, worked hard and did an excellent job on an older man. Honestly, while I waited and saw him work, I wanted my cut with him. Unfortunately he left to go inside their building and was replaced by this young black haired latino. He was working on this guy who walked in with a Phil Foden cut and 75 min in, largely unchanged but with a clean trim on the sides. (There was hardly any hair on the ground ) One reason his cut was taking so long was this barber was too busy live-streaming on his phone, occasionally looking at peoples' comments. It also didn't help he was cutting at a snail's pace. It's one thing to be attentive to detail (something the first barber was good at). It's another to just go hair by hair. Bad for business, wasting peoples' time, so much that I don't feel like stopping by the actual shop. Hope the business sees this and if they do, please let me know the name of that guy. If I ever do stop by, I'd like to avoid him at all cost.

He recently moved from the Dashery to Powell's (where he got his start decades ago). He is meticulous about his work, kind to his customers, and a fun guy to be around while he practices his craft. The barbershop is upbeat, social, and everyone seems to have a great time. Below is my prior review which discusses Bey's work and approach in more detail. --- So, I think I should start by stating the obvious. This is a black barbershop and I am a white guy. When I walked in I asked if they felt confident about cutting my hair. Bey said, "man, hair is hair--have a seat" along with a big smile. He asked me what I wanted and then gave some recommendations and outlined his plan. After almost an hours' exacting work Bey had perfectly executed his vision. Not only did I get a good haircut, he also trimmed my beard, transitioned between hair and beard, and added a straight razor shave. The price for all that work was extremely reasonable--$25. ...

I went in a bit of an unruly mess, and I walked out, yes, still a mess--the man is a barber, not a psychotherapist--but noticeably less unruly. Almost presentable. Nice work.
