Safety Garage Door

Safety Garage Door

A roller broke on our 16-ft garage door causing the opener to get stuck. While we managed to change…read morethe roller and reset the opener, the opener started making a loud noise, so we called Safety Garage Door. Khaled showed up within the time frame and wasted no time. Our garage door is 60 years old and the axle and rails probably are original. But Khaled didn't try to tell me that everything needed replacing. He pointed out the problem parts, such as the spring that was overwound (causing the opener to work hard to close the door). He also pointed out some indentations in the axle, remarking that it would be best to replace it but it would not be unsafe to leave it for now. The rollers were old and covered in dirty, caked-on black grease. He gave maintenance tips, dissuading from WD40, pointing out the parts needing 3-in-1oil. He also threw in labor for swapping out bearings for the axle. When the drums and cables are ready to replace, I plan on calling these guys, and will probably have them install a new axle.

Long, long overdue updated review (previous review was from a tenant that quickly wrote it after…read morebeing requested to when the job was done): Absolutely atrocious installation, and very, very unprofessional. The garage door installed was not the one that was negotiated during our call, which had a few other additions to it. The installer even FORGOT TO BRING one with a MAIL SLOT!! Unbelievable!! After realizing a garage door does indeed need a mail slot, he said "Oh, well, don't worry, this one is on the house, it's on me man!" like it was some kind of favor or nice thing to do, then expressed "I have to go all the way to Home Depot to get it, but since I'm a nice guy I'll do this for you this one time." I couldn't believe what I was hearing, he seriously thought it wasn't his fault. He then proceeded to install the most ghetto mail slot, it wasn't even straight or aligned correctly, not stainless steel, and when inserting your hand through the top part of the metal that he cut snags the top of your hand and can cut you. The metal part he cut even covers at least 1/3 of the insert hole! He also did not install the new chain that came with the garage door opener and kept saying it's not needed and is an "extra job" to do. Anything that was said that wasn't satisfactory he kept saying "it's fine, it's fine, don't worry about it" and "you don't have to care so much about it, why do you care about these things? I think it's fine and nobody can see it anyway," while there were some dents on the "new" garage door after he installed it when it was pointed out. Even when asked "if you installed it like this at your place, would you be fine with it?" He replied, "I don't really think it's a big deal." So unprofessional. He also tried to upsell me on railings and wheels, and other things I didn't need. Furthermore, when he was contacted about everything, he told my tenant "I'm not the main installer guy, the other guys that work at this company are way better and they can install them 100% correctly, but since they weren't available I had to go out and do it." I can't believe this kind logic and all these excuses, and still expected to be paid fully like nothing was wrong or weird. Very dishonest company and will try to use any excuse to half-ass their job or laziness, as well as using ways and saying things in a way to make the customer "feel bad" or "uncomfortable" to not speak up to them or mention something off. Ever since then, the garage does not properly close, having to get out and hold down the button from the inside since the sensors think there is something in the way or wrong with the rail alignment, the door is super loud, even making a really big "bang" sound each time it goes opens and closes. The garage door hasn't been able to close normally for quite a long, long time now, by garage door remote or normal wall button, often times having to manually close it by hand as well! Also reading other reviews, I was also told that there was tax and was charged for it when maintenance and service labor isn't taxable. Stay away from this company, please! The low star ratings are here for a reason!

Gil's Garage Door & Gate Services - CHI Cedar plank with obscure windows on the left

Gil's Garage Door & Gate Services

West Berkeley

We had a garage door issue and Gil's was the 3rd garage door company that we talked to. Garage…read moredoor company #1 sent a rep that was very pushy and super sketch. He also wanted $600 to lower the door prior to assessing and quoting on recommended repairs. Garage door company #2 sent a rep that was still very aggressive, but at least they were able to get the door in a somewhat functional condition (door rollers back on the rails, cabling back on the drums, spring tension redone) for $200. It was functioning in manual mode, but in automatic, the door would stop 2/3s of the way down and go back up. Company #2 incorrectly diagnosed the problem as an internal issue with the limits on the door opener. They also wouldn't give a straight quote or a recommendation on what to fix. It was more of an a la carte - if you want to replace the springs, $699; cables + drums + springs ($1529); garage door opener $2500+. This would be like going to a car mechanic for squeaky brakes and getting menu pricing of replacing each part of your car. I digress... here's the actual review: Because of the first two companies, I was ready for more shenanigans from Gil's. However, the representative that arrived was a breath of fresh air. Avi examined the area and gave us his assessment. The door was balanced and no visible issues with any of the parts. The Chamberlain wall mount unit was unlikely to be the issue as they are fairly robust units and probably just needed reprogramming. I told him I wanted to try and reprogram it myself and asked for a quote on a replacement in case it was an opener issue. Avi was extremely professional, honest, and taught us a little about the mechanics of the door opening system. Even though we were able to resolve the problem, I would definitely go with Gil's for any major repair. After seeing all three repairmen, I took some time on the weekend to see if there was anything I could adjust. I noticed the rail was two separate pieces of metal and that they weren't aligned perfectly with each other. I used an adjustable wrench to bend the rails a little to fix that. I also added some lubricant to the rails and cleaned the safety sensors as well. Garage door is working like a charm now.

I called and was offered a same day appointment which was nice, even though I had a non-urgent…read moreissue. The technician arrived on time and had called earlier to give me an ETA too. Honestly, the whole appointment was really confusing for me. I'm not sure if it just depends on the technician, but I didn't get that "free quote/estimate" as advertised on Gil's website. I felt like there was a lot of upselling initially, such as pressure to get entirely new cables, rollers, and springs when my initial concern was the gap between the door and floor (potential rodent entry). When I questioned if this was really necessary and that I wasn't interested in pursuing any of those services same day, the technician made comments such as "when it breaks let me know" which was unsettling. Later he did say that I could reuse the rollers and cables I already had to save money which changed the tone of things. He also kept asking personal questions which was uncomfortable. At the end of the appointment, I was slapped with a $721 bill - for what??? Note, if you want to avoid the 3% charge, they recommend paying via Zelle or Venmo (they did refund me the $21 (3%)) since I paid via Zelle. Initially the technician just asked me to Zelle/Venmo him (I didn't even know the amount yet!), but I refused without seeing some kind of invoice first which I did receive in the customer portal minutes later and did pay. Anyways, after the technician had left, I called back to ask for clarification on the services with the price breakdown (learned that it was $175 each for panel repair, motor limit adjustment, springs retention, door rebalanced). I contacted the company again to seek clarification on the services such as whether or not there's standard pricing or if written contracts are typically utilized. I wish there was more explanation on the services. I guess the technician/company could tell I was confused about the situation and at least offered to rectify the situation a few days later which they did. They wanted to emphasize customer satisfaction which I do appreciate. I think the overall experience would've been much more pleasant if everything was in writing and there was actually a (no-pressure) free estimate as advertised. Overall, I don't think Gil's Garage Door & Gate Services has any ill intent and they do value customer satisfaction. Maybe it just depends on the technician. Also recommend buddying up with someone during the appointment to avoid being asked personal questions or reduce possible upselling. Other than that, Gil's work quality seems fine and they are very quick.

We had "Door Pros (Justin/Josh)" replace our old garage door about 6yrs ago. Yesterday (Sun,…read more1/25/26) we had an uneven load issue resulting in the improper tension and the two end lift cables misaligning the door so I frantically called and requested service via their online tool. Josh got back to me within a half hour asking for photos and descriptions to aid in resolution which I provided. Amazingly Josh scheduled their technician Matt for an appointment the next morning (Monday)..! Well Matt was incredibly understanding and quickly assessed the series of tasks to release the door, adjust the spring/torsion and accommodate for the slightly uneven driveway to ensure an even bottom seal. Further, Matt re-aligned the tracks, bracing, inspected and lubricated the rollers. It's still boggling to me that Matt was able to accomplish this repair in less than an hour.! I wish I could give Matt and "Door Pros" 10 stars instead of just 5. I wholeheartedly recommend "Door Pros" to everyone who not only needs a better garage door but also the years of support, service and trust you gain with great products. Thank you so much Matt! - Phil R.

Door Pros Garage Door Co…read more 2023 we purchased a very expensive wood garage door from Door Pros. Bobby was the salesmen in San Rafael. I should have ran once I met Bobby. The kind of guy that promises you the best in the world. Well when they delivered the door to install it the door was still wet from the stainer Door Pros had stain it. They swore it would be fine! Fast forward to 2026. I have had Door Pros out over 20 times to try and get the door properly working but every Tom, Dick, and Harry (smokers who smelled like a tobacco factory) they sent must have never been to garage door repair school. Joe the lead technician in the beginning told us the door needed to be taken off and sheetrock cut out so the door would run properly. The next Joe Schmoooo told us something different. So every guy that came out in 3 years had a different story. The last guy 2 months ago said it was installed wrong and he would have the owner call me next week but NEVER a call back. I even spoke with Josh the owner a few years ago and he said they would make it good. We finally said GOOD RIDDANCE to Door Pros. They aren't Pros at all. Just a company that gives a lot of talk and gives you no action. We called another company in SF and in once visit they told us Door Pros had installed the whole door wrong. Wrong springs, bend rails, etc. etc. The door after one visit works beautifully. So stay away from Door Pros. Listen to your gut. I wish I did as we wasted 3 years of our lives with that awful company. Too many photos to post but believe me I have them in a file of companies NOT TO USE.
