Funny how I found out about this place. There was a plumber (Enzo) that went to my friend's house to replace a garbage disposal. As he was finishing up I asked him where he was from? He said he was from Venezuela. Then asked him if he knew of any Venezuelan restaurant with excellent tasting food? Never had it before and was so excited to try it! Went with my brother and his wife and luckily she spoke Spanish. We ordered one of everything (I think) and they also had a Christmas combo item we got as well. Surprised how different everything was and had a small Mexican similarity to tamales but that is where it ended. Service was fast and fun, the server kept laughing and making fun of us for ordering so much food. He also took us on a tour to the other side of the building were they are building a larger dining room. The greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area continues to surprise me, in a good way. I decided to try out this place, and their food. I forgot that "A lo Maracucho" tends to be Venezuelan for big, bold, and in your face. I ordered the tostones, expecting a handful of small plantain discs. Nope. It was one disc, approximately the size of a small pizza, crispy and cut into wedges, served with Venezuelan white sauce and salty cheese. The menu claims it is an appetizer, for many it could be a meal in itself. The parrillada plate was also good, but big. Unfortunately my hotel room did not have a refrigerator for my leftovers. I saw they sold pastelitos, tequeños, arepas, and cachapas. All looked good, but BIG. Maybe next time I am in town. The place is authentic Venezuelan, and has a little shop with Venezuelan snacks and small items for those missing the old country. The meal woud have been perfect with a Venezuelan beer, but I did not see that offered. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for a long time. One of my Venezuelan/Colombian buddy highly recommended this restaurant for their Patacon and Arepa and I finally got my butt to come here today. Boy was I glad I did. My son and I went on a Sunday morning around 1030am and the place was already busy. The nice cashier lady got someone who spoke English to come and help take our order. She was very nice and helpful. We only waited briefly for our food while enjoying the salsa music on stage. We got home and was pleasantly surprised how nicely packed our food was. The Arepas were out of this world, and their Patacon was to die for. Love the yellow plantain in this dish. Overall a very good experience for us. Food was excellent and generous portions. The patacones were among the best I've had in UT. However, I will not be going back or at best I will order pick up. The service was subpar, almost a little rude to the point I started feeling nervous about asking questions about the menu. Now the one thing I did not like came at the end with my receipt. Even with the subpar service I left a good tip (I don't like to be a punk). As I was driving home my wife noted that they had already charged a tip to my receipt (For two people), so they ended up with larger tip than they really deserved. PREDATORY AND VIOLATING. Do not come here if you do not speak Spanish. You will be taken advantage of. We came with a party of 4. The owner sat us down and did not let the server come and help us at all. We had no idea what to get so we ask for suggestions and he just ordered 4 entrees for us. Ok that's fine. He then proceeded to bring out 2 appetizers we never asked for, he never mentioned anything, he just forced us to eat it. Literally pointed at us one by one to pick it up and had us all take a bite at the same time. He then proceeds to bring out some Venezuelan lemonade and pours us all some cups. We have a second to breathe until our food arrives. The food is fine just pretty salty and really heavy. Out of nowhere he brings us a soup, we AGAIN never asked for. All this time we thought he was being very nice letting us try different Venezuelan dishes.. until the bill arrives and we get hit WITH A WHOPPING $125 bill. Never ever coming back. Excellent Food and Service! Almost didn't try this place because of a few bad reviews but glad I did. A previous review stated that they got taking advantage of because of the language barrier, my experience was just opposite of that. When I received the menu I sat to review it and was overwhelmed with the selections, nothing looked familiar. The order taker must have noticed and came over to me and went over every page and every food selection and explained them. I made a couple choices and ordered them to go. When my food was ready the same order taker packed my order and put in some extra sauces that he suggested must be tried. He then thanked me, wished me well and shook my hand. I got home and was very pleased, not only are the portions more than expected but the flavors were so tasty and the sauces took it to next level delicious. It's so great to have a Venezuelan restaurant in the southern half of the Salt Lake Valley. Food was really good...the tequeño's were some of the best I've ever had. We ordered patacones and empanadas as well (you'll definitely want to order the pabellon empanadas...my only suggestion is they SHOULD make the empanadas FRESH.
