Even grabbing a beer feels like a scam--prices are about 20% higher than Las Brisas or Marine Room for no reason other than greed. I once spoke to the owner, Marco, and he couldn't have been more uninterested. He came off fake, detached, and clearly not invested in the guest experience. At least Javier's down the road has leadership that actually cares when something goes wrong. Here? Not even close. Carmelita's serves stale, salty, disgusting food, paired with rude service and ridiculous prices. Save your time, your money, and your appetite. This place is a hard pass.

All the decorations and the furniture and the selection of sake and the smells coming from the little kitchen are so authentic. This All reminded me of being somewhere in the middle of Kyoto. It is so authentic, I am so happy I found this little gem, but I'm also a little worried about other people finding out because there's only 10 seats available at the bar and I don't want to lose my seat by letting everyone know how wonderful this little place is. I tried every single appetizer, which by the way changes weekly depending on what's available. Hiro is such a wonderful chef, and so proud of the culinary excellence of Japan that he embraces it when he cooks for you. He truly cooks with love, which is the most important ingredient a chef can have available. Everything was wonderful, some things better than others but all very good. My favorite was the shrimp wonton soup and the pokey with avocado. The salmon with a pesto like sauce and avocado was also excellent. I tried a selection of different sakes and all of them were top-of-the-line. Yuka really knows her stuff. And she is so sweet and adorable with a wonderful smile and giggling demeanor that makes you feel so content to be in her presence. Except I couldn't open the stupid thing for a couple of minutes. Sure enough, a twenty got into the zipper. I was dripping sweat since I had just ascended the steep Thousand Steps Beach stairway and temperatures were rising on a muggy morning. The nice lady gave me a couple of papertowls to pat myself dry with, and did I ever need it. My legs were still burning from the ascent! What I needed wasn't booze, although I approved of the selection and reasonable prices, no, I needed sunblock. Sure enough, they carried it, plus I could have scored a Frisbee or another beach towel if necessary. I also saw a small but good cigar selection, which was funny because all morning I could smell cigar smoke and essence, even while on the beach.
