    A.G. Thompson House B&B, June 2016
    Douglas H.

The best B&B experience we've ever had. Angie and Tim have thought of everything. What a wonderful place, all with the best personal charm you could imagine. We stayed there for the Grandma's Marathon, and Angie completely catered to all of the marathon runners, just as if she had been our coach and sponsor. It's fantastic.

    Amazing entrance

My wife and I had a very enjoyable stay here. The owners Tim and Angie were so personable and welcoming. It is very obvious to us that the owners pay huge attention to detail in every possible ways from the cleanliness, breakfast quality and taste, ambience and the quality of their suites. We have traveled to many different hotels and B&Bs in Asia, Europe and North America, this is by far the most impressive and enjoyable stay. We usually don't care so much about these international and national rankings of hotels and B&Bs, but we truly understand why this place has been voted the best in the United States and 10th in the world. We feel blessed to be able to visit this place, and hopefully many more visits in the future. We highly recommend AG Thomson B&B. Thanks for a really great stay.

My wife and I recently stayed here during a Duluth area conference. We primarily chose it based upon the online reviews. Anyone who reads any amount of reviews needs to understand that all reviews are subjective. You can be fairly confident that if the overwhelming majority of reviews are positive, it is a safe bet. That was definitely the case with the AG Thompson house. If you are expecting a state of the art brand-new facility, this is not it. This is a bed-and-breakfast in a grand old home. I must say, we were not disappointed. The house is a lovely old home located in an area of large old mansions on the hill overlooking Lake Superior. As a custom builder, I appreciate the character of many of the old homes. The AG Thompson is full of character. Tim and Angie, although we did not see them much due to our schedule, were excellent hosts. Tim graciously walked us through everything in great detail and made us feel very welcome, even meeting us in the parking lot. We stayed in the Ryerson suite, which was every bit as nice as the pictures. The extra sitting room, is very nice as it is a great place to sit and relax after a long day. I had requested a special package which included a floral bouquet. The bouquet was beautiful, obviously very fresh, almost as though it has been picked from the garden outside. Upon leaving, I commented to Tim that it was one of the nicest floral bouquets we have seen in sometime. He said that Angie had put it together for us and that she had some experience in that in the past. The breakfasts were phenomenal and well rounded. We are foodies, and the quality and complexity of the preparations were outstanding. When we returned to our room after our first day of conferences, everything was restored to perfect order and clean. I will include some pictures of our stay as sometimes they speak the loudest. Thank you Tim and Angie for a great husband and wife getaway!

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous! I'd truly give them a million stars if I could. Adorable rooms, great location, and the nicest innkeepers I have ever met. The A.G. Thomson House consists of 4 rooms in the main house, and then 3 rooms in the carriage house (right next door, next to the driveway). All the rooms are beautifully decorated, very clean, and have fireplaces. They also have lovely, big whirlpool tubs right in the room! (Ooh la la.) The "common" areas (dining room, sun porch, living room) are also gorgeous, and really cozy. As I said, the innkeepers are amazing. Angie & Tim Allen (not of "Tool Time" fame - ha!) are so friendly & helpful, and they really take pride in providing their guests with a relaxing, romantic weekend. They offer free wine in the evenings, and they have a movie closet with tons of DVDs that all guests are welcome to bring back to their rooms & watch on their flat screen TVs. They also have TONS of books in the living room/library area, which made for fun reading during morning coffee or downtime in the afternoons. Angie & Tim did a lot of visiting & chatting with us, as well, and it was fun to get to know them. My boyfriend & I arrived in our room to find complimentary truffles & champagne, and the inn provided us with a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant of our choice (out of 4 options). Wow! One of the best parts of staying here were the breakfasts! These were not boring "continental" breakfasts by any stretch. Over the two mornings we were there, Angie served the guests wild rice quiche, fruit & yogurt parfaits, cranberry & white chocolate scones, French toast, roasted baby potatoes, pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, cheesy hashbrowns, and probably a few other delicious things I am forgetting... One very important thing to note: As vegans, my boyfriend & I were nervous about getting a good breakfast at a B&B. However, Angie & Tim were more than accommodating, and Angie said she actually welcomed the challenge of making vegan food for us. Throughout the weekend, we were served an AMAZING tomato & basil tofu scramble, vegan muffins, vegan French toast, roasted potatoes, and fruit salads. They even had soymilk for our coffee. We could tell that it was really important to Angie that we enjoyed our food - and we did! I absolutely prefer staying in B&Bs over hotels. I mean, it's nice to get away & stay anywhere (B&B or hotel), but bed & breakfasts tend to add those special touches that really add to the trip. We never would have gotten this special treatment at a hotel! Sometimes B&Bs are a little more expensive, but you can certainly get good deals! We visited the A.G. Thomson House during the "off season" when rates are lower, plus they were advertising a special of 10% off their rooms. In addition to that, we got a free dinner certificate, free FANCY breakfasts, free champagne, complimentary wine, and a cozy, unique room. Need I go on? This place is amazing, and we will definitely be back! Hopefully sooner rather than later!

We enjoyed being at the house so much (no need to find other entertainment), relaxing, and enjoying the beauty of the house. We stayed in the Roosevelt Suite, but I will definitely be booking the Blue Room for our next visit. Don't get me wrong, the Roosevelt Room was great, but the Blue Room looks spectacular. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. We had fruit and quiche both days, but the first day we had a green salad and mouse for dessert, and the second day we had cheesy potatoes and crème brûlée. (We had the gluten free vegetarian breakfasts). We both appreciate how Beth was able to accommodate our dietary restrictions and how well everything tasted. Yum! We booked the optional "Guided Wood-fired Sauna Experience" and REALLY enjoyed that, too. The Sauna was located at The Well in Hermantown, and we very much appreciated everything we learned from our tour guy (Adam?). We didn't realize there were so many benefits to the sauna. We will be taking a lot of knowledge from that experience and hopefully will get our own sauna someday. All in all, a wonderful date weekend for hubby and I!

Luckily, the Wolves Den Suite was available for a beautiful summer weekend in July, when occupancy on the lake is very high. Our sweet little dog was welcome for $15 a night. There was a nice view of the lake from all angles of our kitchenette suite. The bed was very soft and came with multiple pillows to suit various tastes. The AC was cold. I bet the fireplace is great in the winter. The shower was hot with complimentary glycerin soap and basic shampoo. The towels were soft. The place was very clean. We used our kitchen to cook up some delicious lake trout we bought at a local grocery store. There is a grill on site too. There is a fire pit that folks gather around in the evening and good cable TV for those who just want to space out. This inn is a retreat away from the world. It is not a high end chain hotel. It is not a spa. It is a relaxed, nature themed, lovingly-created getaway. The innkeepers, Julie and Butch, have grown this business for 30 years. Every stone, every tile, every peony plant, every detail is their creation and it is lovely. They are not afraid to show their faith and I think that is inspiring and brave in an increasingly politically correct world. I very much appreciated the complimentary breakfast. The omelet was delicious and the blueberry pancakes that say "God Loves You" were the best. After being here, I do feel a little more loved.

When checking in, my girlfriend and I were asked to select our preferred (gratis) omelet options, which are normal and "spicy." (More on this in a moment.) Given that IOGG is not technically a B&B, this option to have a free breakfast on the morning of our choosing was a charming and appreciated touch. The building itself is... Unique. Our room offered a legitimately fantastic view of the lake (as do most of the available rooms), and contained everything necessary for a comfortable, extended stay: cookware, dishes, kitchenette, gas fireplace, etc. Our bed was huge and quite comfortable, and fresh flowers greeted us on entry. Much of the visible trim and fixtures appeared to have been lovingly -- if somewhat inexpertly -- made by hand. There were a lot of decorative tiles and rocks in there, too. The overall vibe reminded me of the DIY hippie houses of my childhood, and while certainly clean, everything was sort of adorably ramshackle. Also, SO MANY LOONS. The couple that runs the place were helpful and pleasant, so I hesitate to share the following, but I feel it necessary. Basically, if you are of the evangelical Christian persuasion, the Inn On the Gitche Gumee will feel like home. If you are of any other (or no) persuasion, the Inn On the Gitche Gumee may feel a bit awkward. Various room decorations feature religious exhortations (as do the panca -- wait, I'm getting ahead of myself), and at one point, one of the owners referred to my girlfriend as my "wife." She's a great person, but we're not quite there yet, fella. I found this to be only mildly weird, but some may have stronger feelings on the issue than I do. We chose to eat our complimentary omelets on our final morning. Not top-shelf, but not bad. My "spicy" version wasn't spicy, but it came with a surprise "God loves you" pancake on the side. Although this brought my soul no closer to redemption, I still thought it was a nice bonus. On balance, I would recommend the Inn to those staying in the general Duluth area; the view is great, the rooms are odd but quite comfortable, and the price is not too inflated.

However, the rate wasn't what I would say reasonable so decided to spend the same amount for the B&B experience. We have already visited Rittenhouse Inn and Summit Inn so this lighthouse experience totally got my attention. At first, I was bummed that all the rooms in the actual lighthouse were already taken. However, the Skiff House was a pleasant surprise being totally separate from the common lighthouse main building. Also, we had a large size hot tub with a pitcher to wash your hair. There were windows that peek out into the gift shop so it was nice that the Lighthouse museum closed at 4PM to get some privacy. We closed the blinds but still found people walking outside the gate to enjoy the sunset. Well, MeLissa was sooo nice to leave us some bread pudding in the fridge after it cooled off. Plus, she helped us with our luggage when we got confused and entered through the gift shop instead of the back entrance. MeLissa showed us the kitchen with an electric kettle with some hot chocolate/tea as well as microwave for popping popcorn. She also left us with 2 coupons at Blackwoods Restaurant and Vanilla Bean Café. We ended up having dinner at Blackwoods and picked up some jam at Vanilla Bean. Plus, there was a voucher to visit all the museums including the Lighthouse museum. I loved that we were able to enjoy the bread pudding after dinner when all the other guests were out. We enjoyed the peace and quiet in the parlor room and popped some popcorn to bring to the Skiff House. We then picked out 2 games- Trivial Pursuit and Phase 10 to borrow from the parlor room. Later that night, we enjoyed the board/card games with popcorn. When the sunset, we enjoyed the hot tub once all the tourists left the park. I would recommend to get eye mask and ear plugs since the rotating light source from lighthouse may distract you as well as boat horns. The next day, I woke up early and explored the grounds while everyone was asleep. I woke up my wife and we walked from our Skiff House to the lighthouse main bldg. to go to the top for the view. We looked through the port holes and watched as barges pass through. I dragged my wife to the observation room to get a good view of the harbor. Well, it was getting close to 8:30AM so we walked out to the breakwater fishing pier and noticed the large barge. When it was getting close to 9:00AM, we arrived at the main lighthouse bldg. for breakfast. Kevin was nice to fill up my thermos with coffee. We sat down early and were served first for some fruit soup, quiche, grapes, banana nut muffin along with some orange juice, coffee, and water. Overall, I was wowed on the hospitality and uniqueness to the whole experience. I would love to come back and share with my friends and family. There is even a fire pit that people used after dark to stay warm and socialize. By the way, there was no WiFi or TV so it's nice to actually spend time together without all the distractions of the internet or cable.
