This was my first B&B experience and was exactly what I picture when I think of a B&B. We visited at Christmastime so the house was lavishly decorated with decorations and garland and trees! It was the picture of a Christmas B&B. The house is built very traditionally with a foyer, dining & kitchen area, large living room and sitting room on the first floor and a large staircase to the upstairs where the rooms are located. When we visited, the only source of heat was from the fireplace which made things a tad chilly on the coldest nights, but was never unmanageable. The owners, Angie & Tim were welcoming and friendly. They were able to recommend nearby restaurants and were always very accommodating. The only thing we thought odd is that we stayed there over 2 years ago and never received any sort of follow up or further communication/invitation back! Perhaps this is their business model - not to overrun customers with marketing emails and promotions, however it was odd never to hear anything from them again. read more

Disappointed. Being #1 on Trip Advisor in Duluth and having been to some outstanding B&B's in other cities, we had high expectations. Breakfast is our favorite meal of the day and our first one here was so sugary and starchy we actually went out for breakfast the second morning. The menu was French toast with blueberry sauce, harvest muffin so sugary it was inedible- and I am known for my sweet tooth!, and cheesy potatoes. Carb overload. Because our breakfast basket had been delivered to a different room and had someone else's name on it I assumed it was vegan or something. It was not. Angie said she typically serves vegetarian. I imagine it makes her job easier, but we are active young people and need a protein source. How about eggs??? In any form. I guess they occasionally do serve a quiche, so we just lost the roll of the dice. Phooey. On a positive note, we stayed in the Mayor's Chamber room which was as lovely as the photos. The tub was wonderful. The house is beautiful and the patio out front was bursting with amazing, pretty potted flowers. Also loved walking the neighborhood with it's huge historical homes. One last thing. I love to come into my room after it has been cleaned and the bed is made exactly as it was when we arrived. They did not do that. The sheet was tucked in, but none of the decorative pillows or coverlet had been put back on. Because the cleaning basket had been left in our room, maybe someone left before finishing? We'll never know. The housekeeping glitches and menu problems could be a fluke, hence the 3 stars instead of 2. We have experienced much better. p.s. I mentioned in the on-line registration form that it was our anniversary and they never mentioned it during our stay or did anything special. We stayed in the carriage house and it was wonderful. It's a large spacious room with a kithenette, living room space with a beautiful stone fireplace and hot tub. There is a nice private deck as well. Private and charming. The breakfast was brought out to us. Delicious and filing. The deer outside our door at 5pm was a treat to see. My wife and I stayed with Angie and Tim over our anniversary weekend. They were wonderful hosts and the house was amazing. Tim and Angie were extremely friendly and very helpful. Their welcome was warm and they gave us a brief tour. They gave us recommendations for places to visit and eat (we ate at one of their recommendations the night after they gave it to us and it was amazing as well). They were both socialable and chatty, but understood if we wanted time without chatting. Breakfasts were great. Plenty to eat and it was all delicious. The creme brule french toast was probably the best thing ever. They also had a fun option of delivering a picnic basket to your room for breakfast. We did that our second day there. Such a great option. We stayed in the Ryerson suite. I don't think I'd change that. It has a nice sun room which was a great place to relax, read, nap, and watch a little tv. Absolutely loved our time at the A.G. Thomson House. We intend to make it a yearly trip and stay. read more

The Thomson House is A-mazing! We went there for our honeymoon and absolutely enjoyed every second of our stay. In fact, we loved it so much we booked an additional night when we should have been en route to a friend's wedding! Our first two nights, we stayed in the Lake Superior Suite. It's the best room there and we plan to book the suite for our future stays. The suite is within an old carriage house. It's spacious with a King-size bed, large leather sofa, flat screen TV, kitchenette, jacuzzi and the very best feature...a private patio. We enjoyed beyond delicious breakfasts on the patio. In the afternoon we drank wine (provided by the house) and played Scrabble and Cribbage (also provided by the house). The last night, we stayed in the Ryerson Suite. It's a beautiful room in the main house. There is a private sun room attached. We enjoyed a late afternoon nap and after a night out, picked out a movie (there is a closet full of great flicks available to guests) and snuggled up on the couch. Angie & Tim, have thought of all of the important details to make this the perfect B&B. We're happy to support two hard-working and fantastic local business owners! We will be back soon. My husband and I spent a weekend in October at the A.G. Thomson House B&B. We were greeted by Tim as we pulled in the parking lot. He showed us the (absolutely beautiful) main house, and we also met Angie inside. This was our first trip to a B&B and we couldn't ask for nicer hosts. We stayed in the North Shore Retreat, which is located in the carriage house on the property. It was cozy and so much nicer than a hotel room. Tim showed us where we could help ourselves to free coffee, bottled water, white wine and soda. They also have a room full of DVDs and games that guests are welcome to borrow during their stay. The breakfasts were phenomenal!! I am vegan, and Angie had a delicious menu for me both days. The tofu scramble and apple crisp were especially fantastic. I am always glad when I can be accommodated, but Angie and Tim went above and beyond. My husband is not vegan, but he raved about his meals as well. We will definitely return to A.G. Thomson House again. Next time we'll aim for the summer so we can enjoy the outdoors and grounds area more. read more

My wife and I recently stayed here during a Duluth area conference. We primarily chose it based upon the online reviews. Anyone who reads any amount of reviews needs to understand that all reviews are subjective. You can be fairly confident that if the overwhelming majority of reviews are positive, it is a safe bet. That was definitely the case with the AG Thompson house. If you are expecting a state of the art brand-new facility, this is not it. This is a bed-and-breakfast in a grand old home. I must say, we were not disappointed. The house is a lovely old home located in an area of large old mansions on the hill overlooking Lake Superior. As a custom builder, I appreciate the character of many of the old homes. The AG Thompson is full of character. Tim and Angie, although we did not see them much due to our schedule, were excellent hosts. Tim graciously walked us through everything in great detail and made us feel very welcome, even meeting us in the parking lot. We stayed in the Ryerson suite, which was every bit as nice as the pictures. The extra sitting room, is very nice as it is a great place to sit and relax after a long day. I had requested a special package which included a floral bouquet. The bouquet was beautiful, obviously very fresh, almost as though it has been picked from the garden outside. Upon leaving, I commented to Tim that it was one of the nicest floral bouquets we have seen in sometime. He said that Angie had put it together for us and that she had some experience in that in the past. The breakfasts were phenomenal and well rounded. We are foodies, and the quality and complexity of the preparations were outstanding. When we returned to our room after our first day of conferences, everything was restored to perfect order and clean. I will include some pictures of our stay as sometimes they speak the loudest. What a fabulous home and experience. Tim and Angie have outdone themselves on both their top notch bed and breakfast hospitality (warm, friendly, inviting, but not invasive or obtrusive) but also in the restoration and decoration of this truly fabulous home and grounds. We only stayed one night and I'm kicking myself for not booking more time. The room was cozy and historic, and the anniversary package with flowers, wine and chocolates was such a nice touch to welcome us in. Both Tim and Angie are great hosts, and I enjoyed comparing stories with Tim about our time in the service at breakfast, which was delicious and well portioned. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous! I'd truly give them a million stars if I could. Adorable rooms, great location, and the nicest innkeepers I have ever met. The A.G. Thomson House consists of 4 rooms in the main house, and then 3 rooms in the carriage house (right next door, next to the driveway). All the rooms are beautifully decorated, very clean, and have fireplaces. They also have lovely, big whirlpool tubs right in the room! (Ooh la la.) The "common" areas (dining room, sun porch, living room) are also gorgeous, and really cozy. As I said, the innkeepers are amazing. Angie & Tim Allen (not of "Tool Time" fame - ha!) are so friendly & helpful, and they really take pride in providing their guests with a relaxing, romantic weekend. They offer free wine in the evenings, and they have a movie closet with tons of DVDs that all guests are welcome to bring back to their rooms & watch on their flat screen TVs. They also have TONS of books in the living room/library area, which made for fun reading during morning coffee or downtime in the afternoons. Angie & Tim did a lot of visiting & chatting with us, as well, and it was fun to get to know them. My boyfriend & I arrived in our room to find complimentary truffles & champagne, and the inn provided us with a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant of our choice (out of 4 options). Wow! One of the best parts of staying here were the breakfasts! These were not boring "continental" breakfasts by any stretch. Over the two mornings we were there, Angie served the guests wild rice quiche, fruit & yogurt parfaits, cranberry & white chocolate scones, French toast, roasted baby potatoes, pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, cheesy hashbrowns, and probably a few other delicious things I am forgetting... One very important thing to note: As vegans, my boyfriend & I were nervous about getting a good breakfast at a B&B. However, Angie & Tim were more than accommodating, and Angie said she actually welcomed the challenge of making vegan food for us. Throughout the weekend, we were served an AMAZING tomato & basil tofu scramble, vegan muffins, vegan French toast, roasted potatoes, and fruit salads. They even had soymilk for our coffee. We could tell that it was really important to Angie that we enjoyed our food - and we did! I absolutely prefer staying in B&Bs over hotels. I mean, it's nice to get away & stay anywhere (B&B or hotel), but bed & breakfasts tend to add those special touches that really add to the trip. We never would have gotten this special treatment at a hotel! Sometimes B&Bs are a little more expensive, but you can certainly get good deals! We visited the A.G. Thomson House during the "off season" when rates are lower, plus they were advertising a special of 10% off their rooms. In addition to that, we got a free dinner certificate, free FANCY breakfasts, free champagne, complimentary wine, and a cozy, unique room. Need I go on? I can't believe no one has yelped about this place! My husband and I (along with 3 other couples) stayed at the A.G. Thomson House in Duluth over New Years Eve/Day 08-09. We absolutely LOVED this place. Tom & Angie were such gracious hosts. The breakfasts were amazing (warm pistachio/dark chocolate muffins, cranberry/white chocolate scones, fresh fruit drizzled with yogurt, stuffed french toasts, herb potatoes, wild rice quiche) served at 9am (not too early) and the house was SO cozy. Don't plan too many activities because you won't want to leave your room...the fact that it was -20F might have played a role in that too. They serve complimentary wine in the common areas each evening. We went skiing at Spirit Mountain (our "package" included free lift tickets) then came back and played games, had drinks by the fire place. The rooms are comfy/romantic with 2 person whirl-pool tubs and fireplaces. I think I could get used to this B&B thing. It wasn't cheap, but it was such a nice weekend away....totally worth it in my eyes. read more

We found it in the Lake Superior Suite at the A. G. Thomson House. I have never been in a more beautiful and relaxing room. Plus, there were so many wonderful extras provided like coffee and other goodies in the room. My husband and I visited the AG Thomson House B&B in Duluth over the winter this past year...we had an amazing time! Tom and Angie were great hosts and made our stay very enjoyable. We were recently engaged and they gave us a warm romantic welcome with a bottle of champagne. They were very sweet and took care of us from start to finish. We used the Spirit Mountain package which included lift tickets... so much fun! Angie made fabulous breakfasts that were rich and full of flavor. Each guest room had a unique feel to it... with it's own character and theme. B&B's aren't a cheap getaway but the A.G. Thomson House is worth it! My husband and I spent our honeymoon at the A.G. Thomson mansion and did not want to leave! Not only are Angie and Tim the best and most hospitable innkeepers, they have spared no expense in making the place a comfortable, welcoming "home away from home". From the time we walked in the door to the gorgeous Lake Superior Suite, until we left this morning, we were amazed by the tiny little touches and attention to every detail that makes this B&B stand out from the others. Everything is decorated with such great taste, the gardens were fabulous, the grounds were perfect for relaxing and enjoying a quiet nap on the hammock or a glass of wine on the private deck. Breakfasts were delicious and served with great pride by both Angie and Tim. I loved sitting down with various other guests and getting to know them over a wonderful meal and a cup of coffee. Phenomenal! My wife and I stayed here in 2013 and loved it! We stayed in the North Shore retreat and we are looking to do so again in the near future. The service is extremely accommodating, as well as not notch! Though there were others staying in the house, the ambiance was relaxing, and maintained a high level of privacy. The location is optimal for any wanting to enjoy Duluth's beauty. We highly recommend this wonderful bed and breakfast, and we are hoping to visit in the very near future! read more

This was my first bed and breakfast experience. I am slightly indifferent, only in that the standard has been set so high! My girlfriend brought me here for my birthday. I was extremely impressed with everything; the common areas, the room, location, food, and overall experience. Tim and Angie were so warm and welcoming, kind and considerate, and equal parts helpful in suggesting the local sights. I was also glad to know that Tim is a fellow veteran. I begged my husband for 9 years to take me to a B&B. I didn't realize he'd take me to the best in in Minnesota. I should have known better. The bed was the most comfortable I've slept In other than our own. Breakfast was brought to up to our room. It was blueberry and lemon french toast, strawberry yogurt parfait, wild rice patties (weird, local and great) and pistachio chocolate chip muffins.
