I call myself a customer, but I've never purchased anything here. I come to sell my old stuff. And I've been very pleasantly surprised to find I get a reasonable price for my items. Could I get a little more money from another jeweler? Maybe. But I find that other jewelers don't take into account the history and age of an item. Even if we're talking about just the weight in gold. Today I brought in a small shopping bag full of stuff - good and bad (costume jewelry) . The young gentleman stood with me and had a running commentary of what he thought about the pieces and that some were not suitable for the store, but he gave me suggestions of where I might find a better fit for the pieces. Several items were put aside and then Elan "the SON" of A Brandt & Son came out to see what he thought. He took several items to test for GOLD content and then wrote out a list of what he would pay for each item. He did not try to pressure me at all- and in the past I have left the store without any sale only to find Elan was offering me the best price and was able to give me the quoted price when I returned to sell that item. This time I decided which pieces were better off in someone elses jewelry box. And I left with a check in hand. I felt it was a good experience. Many might be put off a little by how the store is situated. The main door is shared with the bookstore adjacent. And the total store is pretty small and condensed. But if you are searching for unusual items it's a great place to just take your time and peruse around. read more

I have been an online customer of A Brandt & Son for a number of years and always found them extremely responsive and a pleasure to communicate with. There was an issue with an order that I placed a couple of weeks ago, that unfortunately meant it could not be fulfilled. Working closely with Bonnie, I found another piece to substitute for the original. As well as expediting the order and shipment, I was also given very favourable terms on the replacement item. Having been in the professional service industry for 30 years, mistakes and other events happen to everybody. It is the way that the service provider addresses and resolves these issues, that differentiates fantastic service from good service. I had a horrific experience with Brandt & Son. Buyers should beware that their description of items is not accurate. Below is the description of what they featured as a carved ivory necklace and charged accordingly. "A fantastic and unusual carved ivory necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This wonderful piece is made of hand carved ivory beads that are particularly large in size. The beads graduate in size and have an interesting star cutout design. Each bead is hollow inside and magnificently carved with a cutout body and carved ends. The ivory beads are strung on simple, thick white thread and the necklace has a simple, yet secure screw clasp, which is also made of carved ivory. A fabulous necklace, this bold piece would make a wonderful addition to any collection!" I took the piece to a top-notch jeweler to insure it. The jeweler took one look and told me that the necklace was not pearl, but was bone. Of course, I was disappointed and disillusioned. Had I not taken the necklace for an appraisal for insurance purposes, I would have not known that Brandt & Sons are dishonest. I contacted Brandt and Son with the email below. "This is the piece that you represented on your site as ivory, it was appraised as bone, not ivory. I am disappointed, in that if I was not going to insure these, I would have not known that I paid $895.00 for a bone necklace, instead of for the ivory necklace that I thought I was getting. This is an enormous amount of aggravation and stress. I want to be made whole right away. I am prepared to take the next steps. My fiancee purchased a beautiful vintage engagement ring from A Brandt & Son -- it's unique and gorgeous and I love it. Unfortunately, my experience here was very disappointing. When I went to the shop to have my engagement ring resized, the staff weren't very friendly and acted a bit snooty but my fiancee said he had a good experience there so I wanted to give them a chance. I was really looking forward to getting a custom wedding ring made to complement it but it's been nearly impossible to get in touch with them so unfortunately we're going to go elsewhere. We tried calling the shop the week between Christmas and New Year's and there was no message saying they had different hours or that they wouldn't be in the office. We left a message but didn't hear back. We decided to chance it and when we went to the shop, it appeared to be closed -- although again no special hours posted or any notice stating that they would not be open. I left a message explaining that I would like to have a custom wedding ring made. That was a week ago. No response. From what I can tell, their jewelry and selection is wonderful but their customer service and rapport leaves something to be desired. I'll be heading to Jeweler's Row. read more

My boyfriend and I were excited to visit this shop after seeing how many great antique engagement rings they have on their website. We drove an hour from to get there and were the only customers there. We were initially helped by a very nice young woman who happily chatted with us and pulled out the rings I wanted to see. Then Charlotte came back to work and the experience became memorably awful - read through this entire review to see just how bad it gets. The young woman said that she would pass us over to Charlotte because she was the real expert on rings. Charlotte disinterestedly asked, "What was your question?" I explained that I didn't have a specific question, but that my boyfriend and I were simply looking for a ring. As I talked, she put away the rings I had already looked at and liked - and as I asked to see others, she immediately put them back in the case as soon as I was done with them. (Typically other jewelry stores keep the ones you are interested in out, so that you can narrow down your decision from there.) As I looked at the rings, Charlotte stood there and said nothing. No information, no questions, no small talk, nothing. I asked her to bring a tray of rings that was on the bottom shelf out so that I could look at them closer. She kept the tray on the counter, and as I leaned in and tried to pull the tray a little closer to better see the rings, she gripped it tightly with both hands in a frantic way, as if I was going to grab the whole tray and run! That was when I first started to feel insulted by the way Charlotte was behaving... but it got so much worse. At this point, we had been there about 10 minutes, and I had found a few rings that I liked, but had heard no information about any of them, and they were all back the case. Then my boyfriend spotted a ring - and he suggested that I try it on. I said, "Sure, can I see that one?" Charlotte responded "NO, it's too big." It took a few seconds for the shock of that response to wear off - and the young man who was also working in the shop whispered to Charlotte "Just let them try it on." Charlotte's response was to literally stick her nose in the air and not to look at either my boyfriend or I. There have been few times when I've been so insulted. My boyfriend and I immediately left the store, and the young man made a very half-hearted attempt to say "Hope we see you again." They won't see us again, but I hope they do see this review. Charlotte's audacity to tell me what I can and cannot look at was beyond rude. She was obviously not interested in helping us the entire time we were there, and everything about her behavior told us that she was mistrustful of us. I tried to think about what made her feel that way about us - I was dressed the way I do for work (business casual), and my boyfriend was in khakis and a polo. I was carrying a $600 purse, and my boyfriend is a doctor. And black... Racism is one of those things that is very hard to prove, but very easy to feel. Charlotte made us feel plenty uncomfortable and discriminated against, and her DISGUSTING TREATMENT OF US MADE ME CRY ONCE WE LEFT THE STORE. That's just how every girl shopping for an engagement ring wants to feel. My boyfriend and I visited this cool shop in search of an antique engagement ring. I saw several on their website I was interested in so we made a Saturday trip to the shop. We were helped by Bonnie, who couldn't have been nicer. I tried on a lot of rings and finally settled on a very unique art deco ring circa 1910, which we ultimately purchased. I made a second trip to the store on my own to see the ring again and then a third trip to purchase it with my boyfriend. I knew that I wanted an antique piece with very explicit attributes (OEC in square setting, hand-engraving in the band, delicate with rockin' porportions). I did a LOT of online viewing and went to over 20 jewelers in person. We flew up to PA for a weekend to see family and they graciously opened the store to me outside normal business hours. I fell in love with the ring. My (now) fiance went in a few weeks later and he found another ring he liked as well that wasn't listed on the website yet. I lost my engagement ring three days before my wedding, and didn't get a replacement until two years later. I wanted to save some money for a nice ring. This time, I decided to go for a unique ring rather than a plain solitaire like my first. I found this store online and saw a few rings I really liked, so I decided to go in with my husband (this happened in Jan 2012). The lady who helped me try on rings is middle-aged and quite reserved. She seemed a little stand-offish but was courteous enough. Elan was very helpful and affable, and he wasn't pushy at all. I was so excited with the ring that I settled with, we got it right then. Post ring purchase, Elan was still chatting up with my husband, making lots of smalltalk, which I gladly joined in. I thought it was really funny that the middle-aged sales lady actually looked VERY irritated at Elan (for "wasting" time and talking to customers?). Anyway, it didn't bother me that much, but it was strange. I'm still giving A. Brandt and Son 5 stars because I love my ring! Since I got it, so many friends and even strangers have commented on how beautiful and unique it is. Incidentally, a friend of mine who got engaged earlier this year bought her beautiful ring there too. We were so excited when we found out we got our rings at the same store. I posted above and just read the response from the owner. I have brought a few pieces to this store for resizing so maybe she is confused. I did not bring the bracelet to this jeweler a year ago. The owner states "If there was a known issue in regard to the safety chain and clasp after our work, we would have gladly repaired or replaced it immediately." Let me ask you... how do you replace something that was faulty and fell off? The bracelet was in excellent shape when I brought it to you. I did mention my concern that the chain was too long at the time of pick up. I asked if the chain was too long to catch on my wrist and the associate assured me it was fine. My fiance recently purchased my beautiful 1920s engagement ring from A. Brandt. Prior to getting engaged we looked at the website regularly. The engagement was a surprise and the ring is beautiful. Turns out that the owner of the store is from the same working class Philly neighborhood we are from. My fiance had an excellent shopping experience with them, complete with small talk and hospitality. We don't have a lot of money and they treated him like gold. We had to take the ring to get re-sized and we drove out to the store. It's tiny and packed with amazing pieces. The owner, her son and the one sales associate were fantastic. The owner and I briefly talked neighborhoods and the sales associate showed us what wedding bands they had in stock. We will certainly be going back for my band. When they heard that I would have to talk off work to pick up the ring, they were able to send us right to the specialist who would have done the work in the first place. Had I called before hand, I am certain they would have let us know over the phone. We drove to Jeweler's Row and waited all of ten minutes and we were on our way. All in all in was a really cool experience and being able to look at all of those beautiful pieces of jewelry was great. The store sells so many items and there is such a range in prices. I just had a fantastic experience with A. Brandt & Son. I wanted to convert my great grandmother's platinum and diamond Art Deco dress clips into earrings. Not only did they provide very helpful advice on how they would make it an easy conversion to keep the integrity of the piece but also their excitement and knowledge about it was so much fun to experience. I picked them up yesterday and the price was very fair (bonus: no Philly sales tax!) and I cannot wait to wear them to an upcoming wedding!! Their pieces are just exquisite and it took me 20 minutes door to door from the Philly art museum area to get to their store. If you haven't been there, go... My personal expectation was to get a better understanding of the various options for engagement rings, I didnt realize how many variables were involved in ring shopping! However, my anxiety was lessened & i never felt overwhelmed because of the helpfulness of the staff. Elan, which I presume to be the son, was informative about the various collection of rings & educating me about ring characteristics, my fiancee was much more informed than I of course. We were very fortunate because my fiancee found the one she fell in love with, which made the whole experience much more enjoyable. Between the friendliness, patience & product knowledge of the staff and their collection..what I assume to be a difficult process turned out to be not so difficult. I am a collector of antique jewelry and recently took two antique stick pins to A Brandt & Son to be converted into rings. My initial interaction with Bonnie and Elan was so pleasant. They were very attentive and friendly. I received a call about 3 weeks after I dropped the pins off stating that one of the conversions was finished, but the design we spoke about for the second one would cost more than anticipated and did I want to move forward or go with a less expensive design. I appreciated the call and decided to go with a simpler, less expensive design. After not hearing anything after a month, I decided to call. The owner, Annette Brandt, answered the phone. I asked if perhaps my ring was ready and she rudely stated that if it was there I would have received a call. I guess someone else at the store recognized my name and informed her that it was indeed back and no one had called me. I asked her for the price and then stated that I would be by to pick it up. Upon hanging up I realized that the price she gave was not the price that was agreed upon. I called back and again spoke with Annette Brandt. I asked her if she knew why the price was higher than what I was told it would be a month ago. She was dismissive and stated she did not know. I asked if she could take a look at the ring and tell me the design. It was then figured out that it was the more expensive design and not the one discussed. I told her that I did not agree to that price. Again, she was extremely rude and said that if I didn't want to pay for it, she would just have the ring taken apart and give me the pin top. I asked her to please explain why I was being told I had to pay for a design that I did not request. She said the store was busy and she did not have time for this. She then proceeded to tell me she would take a small loss, but still would not honor the quote given to me. I asked her to help me understand how that was fair. She again said she would just have the ring taken apart since I wasn't happy with the work done, and hung up. I called back about a half hour later and spoke with Bonnie. As always she was very polite and kind. I informed her that despite it being extremely unfair and terrible customer service, I would like to just pick up the ring and pay what Annette stated I had to pay. Later that day I went to the store to pick up the ring and it was not there because that awful woman (Annette) had her son take my ring to the jeweler to have it taken apart. Luckily Bonnie was able to intercept it and I picked up the ring the following day. As a result of how rudely and disrespectfully I was treated by Annette, I will never return to that store, nor would I ever recommend it to friends or family. This store is full of pieces that are thousands of dollars each and this snob couldn't honor the price quoted to me and take $100 loss??? It was truly a disgusting experience. read more

Have jewelry to sell? Don't bother with this place. I had several pieces of fine antique jewelry, along with a modern wedding set, that I didn't wear. I called the store to get some information before making the hour and a half trip from where I live. I spoke with a very lovely woman, Bonnie, who told me that they do, in fact, purchase jewelry. I told her I would email photos of the pieces for them to take a look at and I would call for an appointment. When I called for the appointment, Annette, one of the owners, answered the phone. She told me she saw my photos and was interested in what I was selling. We set an appointment for five days later. On the day of the appointment, I drove the hour and a half to Philadelphia, got lost for 45 minutes but finally made it to the store. Annette began looking at my pieces and had a negative comment for each piece she picked up. This is done when the buyer wants to pay less for a piece than it's worth. I told her not to play games with me. Then, after picking up three diamond rings, she said she wished her son was there because he was "better at buying diamonds". Then, she picked up a ring with a green stone and asked me what stone it was! OMG!!!! A "jeweler" that doesn't know a green tourmaline when she sees one? I asked her why she had me come all this way if she wasn't interested in what I had to offer, especially after sending the photos. She said she never saw any pictures! I reminded her that she told me she saw the pictures on the phone and that I had even received an email from Bonnie saying they were very interested in my jewelry. Bonnie confirmed this, which made Annette look like an idiot. Then she proceeded to try to cherry pick the best pieces, offering me ridiculous prices for them without ever putting them on a scale or testing the metal. I asked her if she purchased all the beautiful pieces in her store by giving people low ball prices prices for them and she said yes! I finally lost it. I told her I was not stupid and was not going to give my things away. I took my jewelry and left. She clearly has no idea what she's doing, or she's dumb like a fox. I went into the city and found a lovely estate jeweler who took the time to measure my stones, test and weigh the gold, and offer me a fair price for what I had. I love A. Brandt and Son. I have been there multiple times over the years and have been treated with respect, integrity, honesty, and sincerity. No one has ever tried to sell me anything "out of my range" and they have always worked with me to meet my needs as a customer. I have had numerous repairs and have been pleased with each one. I also had my engagement ring and wedding band re-set and absolutely LOVE what both look like. Each time I go inside, they work with me whether I intend to buy or am just looking for ideas for a future purchase. I highly recommend A. Brandt to anyone who is looking for a wonderful jewelry store with knowledgeable, friendly staff who are designers as well as salespeople. And, the jewelry is just gorgeous!! read more

Years ago my sister gave me an a attractive little desk clock, a regular round battery-powered body in a wooden mounting carved like a mountain. When the battery died I put the clock body in my bag till I should pass a place to have the battery replaced. Also, I mislaid my watch and decided I'd rather buy a cheap, simple, reliable one than have forty-'leven functions to remember. I happened to be walking past A Brandt & Son and went in. They replaced the clock battery in a few minutes for around $10 while I looked at their vast array of watches, from the simplest to extremely elegant and costly. All the prices I looked at seemed reasonable for the merchandise. I bought a plain Casio that just tells the time with black hands and markings on a white face, thin and light and comfortable, for around $19. I'm well satisfied with both and won't hesitate to go back there or recommend them to others. read more

I am so happy with my experience at A. Brandt and Son! We made the trip from center city not knowing what to expect. I am so glad we took the chance! First of all, it is located in such a quaint town! Parking has never an issue and at this point we've been there three times. It's street metered and all you need is a quarter. It is right down the street from the train station (in case you use septa). Anyway they had a nice selection of rings in our price range. My fiancé settled on a ring from the 1880s that looks brand new! The staff accommodated his proposal plans and helped him purchase the ring even though the store was closed for vacation! They were also very helpful when I needed a repair. They covered the cost without the blink of an eye. I will always remember this special shop in when I think of my engagement. I really enjoyed shopping at A Brandt and Son. They have a website with multiple photos of their pieces so that you can see ahead of time what you are looking for. They have sizing and pricing info that make it very simple to narrow down your options. I found a gorgeous antique opal ring for my engagement ring. It is so beautiful. I am a waitress, and all of my customers stop me and ask where I got such an exquisite piece. I already knew it was my size, and when my husband and I went to the store, we were please that the sizing was exact and it fit. The store is small, but packed with special and high quality items. I also found an adorable wedding ring here for $200, which was engraved and really unique. They have a variety of styles and seem to have a loyal local following as well. All of the staff was extremely welcoming and knowledgeable about the pieces that I asked about. Although I did not purchase anything they still provided me with great customer service. I met a woman a few years ago who was wearing some lovely art deco and vintage rings. I asked where she got them and she told me....So, I immediately called and asked for directions to check this store out. When I arrived, I was a bit surprised that the store was so tiny but I thought I'd have a look around. Most of the pieces ( especially the rings) were quite tiny but Extremely Expensive! I have known about vintage jewelry my entire life and when I asked if he ever had sales he replied " I don't have to!" He was sort of rude and kind of annoyed that I asked to look at many different rings. There were maybe 1 or 2 pieces that blew me away...the rest of them I could easily buy on ebay for at least Half the price. Many of the small diamonds had inclusions, on a yellow hue and I just did not see what all the fuss was about. That was the first and last time I was ever in that store. I was selling estate jewelry I'd inherited. As advised I found a few places that bought estate jewelry and took my stuff to them all to get bids. The jewelry business is funny, there was a range from fun to creepy and cheap to fair. I am glad to recommend Annette and her son Elan as being the most fun to deal with as well as the most fair as far as their bid on the lot. They were the only place that saw value in some pieces as 'jewelry', not just scrap gold, and were willing to pay a small premium on those pieces. They also appreciated a few silver pieces for their jewelry interest as opposed to the others that didn't even want to look at silver, no matter how interesting the pieces. I'm happy to know a few pieces will find new owners who will appreciate them as well as feeling I was treated very fairly and professionally. I am so disappointed in the service (rather lack of service) I received from A Brandt. I contacted the store a full two weeks in advance to try to set up an appointment and give a list of the items I was interested in seeing. I am an avid collector of vintage jewelry, so I had several items I wanted to see and I put a hold on certain ones (as I was advised by salesperson, "Bonnie"), since I was travelling from several hours away. Each time I contacted the store, I felt as if there was surprisingly little interest in my potential purchase--the staff there act like they are doing you a favor, rather than the other way around. The follow through on my calls/emails was terrible, with me having to call back and email more than a few times to get a response. I wasn't even notified that one of the main items I had put a hold on was no longer available, until I saw this on the company website the day before my scheduled visit. Had I not checked, I don't think anyone would have even told me the item wasn't going to be there when I arrived. There are a lot a great stores which have wonderful vintage pieces, so I would not recommend A. Brandt if you want to feel like a valued customer and receive conscientious service. read more

I visited yesterday to look at antique engagement rings. Sarah assisted me and showed me all the rings I wanted to see. She was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. When I consulted with her about making some changes to my own ring, she helped me articulate with the owner what I was looking for (from cut to color and clarity). She even showed him the rings I liked to make sure we were all on the same page with the style. She later wrote down the ring ID numbers so I could look at them later on the website. In my recent experiences of meeting with jewelers, she was the only one that took great care in understanding what I was looking for. It's amazing the variance you get with jewelers out there - some are quite bizarre and even unprofessional (a jeweler once told me if I didn't like how sparkly a ring was I could just throw some dirt on it).
