I never write reviews like EVER but I'm so excited I finally found a reliable tailor shop that ONLY does tailoring, so they focus on quality tailoring and nothing else. The guys there did a great job on a difficult request and did it for half the price that multiple other people quoted me. I will be returning! read more

It looked like all suits inside so I wasn't sure if they'd alter my child's Halloween costume, but they were happy to and even suggested several ideas for how we could get a looser fit without extra fabric. In the end they turned too small pants into a skirt that fit! read more

Everything I buy needs shortening and taking in on the legs. No matter what I bring in for alterations, he does it perfectly. I have had other tailors ruin clothing by shortening slacks and sleeves too short. I have taken many, many expensive items to alterations and each one is complete with perfection and accuracy. I rarely take the time to review businesses, but this one is as perfect as it gets. And everyone there is genuinely pleasant and helpful. I am SO happy I decided to try A-1. read more

Didn't get the best tailoring job on a bridesmaid dress but they were nice about it. $55 & 3 days later, the tailor had taken in the sides as well as shortened the straps on my dress but didn't take it in as much as I thought we had discussed so it was loose & the straps were shortened at different lengths so the dress hung crooked on my body. They offered to fix it but timeline wouldn't work for me so I took it as is. I'm giving 3 stars cuz they were very nice but the tailoring job was closer to 1.5 stars. Would try alternative options. read more

I love this tailor. I have brought numerous things in to be altered. Clothes that were both too big and too small and he completely adjusted all of them to fit. Incredible! His prices are also very reasonable. I appreciate all his work and he is so personable. If you are in a hurry or need to pick up while he is closed, he will make arrangements for you! Always willing to go the extra mile. read more

My boyfriend and I took a pair of his suit slacks here to get them slimmed. The pant legs were way too wide and long, and the skilled tailors at A-1 turned them into perfectly-fitting slacks. The entire service cost $22 which, to be completely honest, I have no idea if that's a good price or not. However, the guys working here are skilled and extremely friendly. Other customers came and went while we were inside A-1 and they all seemed to know the store owners personally. Overall, a great local business that I will continue to support. read more

A-1 Tailor - The cash/check requirement is true, but we didn't have to pay 50% up front for the service. - Sewing & Alterations Near Me - Evanston, Illinois

I love the tailor here! I originally chose it because it was near where I worked, but now I'll keep going even though I changed jobs. First, I brought in a bridesmaid's dress that like all dresses of that type was very ill fitting (and two sizes too large) and he very nicely showed me two ways he could alter it - one that was more precise and one that was CHEAPER - and left the decision to me. As I was already spending a lot of money, I was grateful not be forced to pay more. Second, I found the dress I wanted for the rehearsal dinner the day before I was supposed to leave town and needed the straps altered. I asked if he could do them in that short turn around and not only did he have it ready in time, his work was so good that no one knew it had been altered unless I told them. Great service, great work!! read more

Very old school - the guys wears a vest and a measuring tape, and a bit pricey, but the work is beautiful every time. It's the sort of place you should frequent just because it exists. read more

The master tailor here is literally magical. He does an AMAZING job on alterations, you'd think the clothes were sewn that way originally. Overall, absolutely LOVE this place. read more

I took a whole load of clothes in there, and was impressed by the patience I was given. It was a good price and done in a short period of time. Also, they do not take credit cards. So, remember cash or check book. read more

I brought in a beautiful linen guyaberra for major alteration. A very difficult project with pleats and pockets and buttons. Voila! First rate tailoring by the ever-present owner, Luís Puma. Excellent tailoring in a warm and friendly shop. The A-1 is accurate; first rate work. read more

This is a great tailor, who does my clothes, as well as the clothes of one of the guys I take care of. Sometimes, he won't want to do a garment, if the fabric is delicate, or there is an issue over the inseam, but he will tell you in advance. His prices are reasonable, and he is very friendly. read more

I had a fancy pair of pants that needed to be hemmed. The pants had a difficult seam that I was hoping they could replicate when making it shorter; you would never even tell they were hemmed. They did a great job! read more

I've had great results with a wide range of luxury brand womens clothing, including jackets, pants, shorts, blouses, dresses and leather. Luis always explains the options and knows what to do for best results. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the work, which is excellent, and most items are done within one week. read more

I love this place. I've had two dresses for a couple years that I haven't been wearing much because the styles were a bit dated. I brought them to A-1 Tailor and he re-made the dresses for me - added straps on a strapless dress, made a flat hem instead of a bubble hem, and shortened the dress a little. Changed the straps on the other dress, made the skirt of the dress less full and removed a set of enormous pockets. I feel like I have two brand new dresses and I love them! I'll be coming back here again and again. read more

Luis at A-1 Tailor is the best in the biz. I always enjoy coming here, and I trust him to do great work at a reasonable price. I come here for sportcoat alterations, all manner of adjustments to pants and jeans, sleeve shortening, and taking in baggy shirts. Always top notch work. Highly recommended. read more

Went there based on yelp review and my friend. Very nice man greeted me and met my request. I highly reccomend him.

Had 2 pants and 3 shirts tailored, all fits great now! He definitely knows what he's doing.

Just picked up a bridesmaid dress and the work is outstanding. I needed quite a bit taken in on the bodice and straps as well as superfluous boning. I would highly recommend this shop for any job. I'm only used to getting pants or shirts hemmed at the dry cleaners so going to a professional tailor was a new experience. I can absolutely say A 1 is worth the money. read more

Great service! I came here because I run a lot of errands in downtown Evanston and was looking for a good tailor nearby to fix a broken dress zipper. The owner was VERY nice! When I came back to pick up my dress (just under a week),I surprised to find out that he remembered me. He only charged me $7 and even took a break from hemming someone's pants to grab my dress instead of having me wait until he was done. I will definitely be back for the friendly service, low prices and speediness! read more

Been here a few times. Great customer service. Once he fixed a zipper on a pair of jeans for $5 when thought you would need to replace it for $20. Great honest business that's provides great customer service and does high quality work. read more

Waffah (sp?) is the absolute BEST tailor who I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. He does all the work and stands by it time after time. Prices are pretty in-line with other tailors in the vicinity, but don't cheap out to save 10% somewhere else! read more

Had the best experience at A-1 which I chose for location. The bridesmaid dress had 3 full layers that needed hemming as well as whole dress taken in 2 sizes. The alterations are so professional that the dress doesn't look worked on! Fits perfectly. Thank you Louis! read more

Just had a suit tailored for a big event and it looks great! I'm a very happy customer.

Excellent tailor and very skilled!! Such a nice man too..highly recommend!

I love love love A-1 Tailor. The proprietor of this establishment is beyond awesome. He single-handedly gives me faith that people are inherently good. Oh--and he's hilarious. He very clearly explained how certain alterations would be done. He also showed me why one of my dresses couldn't (or really, shouldn't) be altered. What else can I say? It's clear that everyone loves this place. I'll definitely be back. read more

Best Tailor I've been to by far. Wafa is very nice, professional, and accomodating. He always does a fantastic job on all of the pieces I bring in. Once when my friend was visiting from Australia, during one of our shopping sprees, I convinced her to by the larger size of a trench coat she wanted (the next size down was just a bit snug), I told her I had a great tailor, but she was afraid the price would be prohibitive. Still I convinced her to just go in and check. She couldn't believe how reasonable the cost, and how accomodating Wafa (sp?) was. He completed the coat in just a few days so she could have it in time for her flight home. She was stunned at how quick and professional the work was - she still mentions A-1 whenever we get a chance to chat. read more

Wafa is a genius! You know how your Paige/Seven/True Religion jeans wear out in the seat, and no matter what you try to patch them, they just look like you uh, patched them??? Wafa can fix them!! For less than $15. And you can't even see his work! He's resurrected about half a dozen pairs of jeans in our house, saving us hundreds of dollars on replacements. I've been taking my alterations to him for over 15 years - pants, formal gowns, blouses, zipper replacements and more. Everything has always been PERFECT. His prices are reasonable, he turns work around very quickly, and he's a really, really nice guy, too. How can you beat that combination??? read more

Went to this gentleman to get some suit pants quickly tailored for a wedding. I waited too long and was now under the gun to get them done so my SO wouldn't get mad at me for procrastinating. Let me tell you, this guy came through! Took the pants in Thurs morning to be hemmed AND taken out at the waist (yeah, ate too much over the winter too), and he had them back to me by Friday afternoon! Rush job and all, the price was very reasonable and excellent quality of work. Super nice guy too! Will definitely be taking all future tailoring to him. As he explained, they are professional tailors, not cleaners or anything else. They do high-end work. Period. Highly recommend!! read more

Very friendly/personable service, fair prices and--most importantly--wonderful work. Highly recommend A-1 as your go-to tailor in Evanston.

I needed a suit tailored to be ready by Friday. I walked in at 2pm on Thursday, this request is something most tailors would have laughed at, but he told me it would be ok and he would let out the waist, thighs and jacket waist as well as shorten the sleeves by Friday at 1. That's a lot of work to be done on such short notice, he did it all and did an excellent job, it is now the best fitted suit I own. The price is reasonable and the service was great! Will be going back all the time read more

By far the best tailor in town. Has repaired all kinds of garments for my family including a couple of really tricky ones. The latest was repairing a tear on the seam on the side of my son's high tech winter jacket: it was so well done we literally couldn't tell where the tear had been. Owner is very professional, polite, and kind. An example of the perfect small business we dream there were more of. Opens at 8:00 a.m., even on Saturdays! read more

Without a doubt, A-1 is as good as advertised. My better half has been bringing her pants here to be hemmed for a little over a year now. She has yet to find anything to complain about, granted hemming pants is not the hardest thing for a tailor to do. So why not give Wafa a real test? I had an ill-fitting double-vented suit jacket (it was too long, too broad in the shoulders and needed taken in at the waist). I brought it in, tried it on, and proceeded to discuss the finer details. Wafa took the time to break it down and told me outright that the alterations may exceed the cost of the coat (it did not). That's the sort of candor I appreciate. When I got the coat back, it fit and was proportioned perfectly and looked like it had been custom-made (in some ways it had been). Based on my internet research, all the fixes Wafa made were considered extremely risky unless performed by an expert. Need I say more? The quality of work is definitely worth the price, which is totally reasonable to begin with. read more

Everything I buy is too long, including the sleeves on a jacket I loved. They were very detailed, had zippers on them (not as hideous as it sounds) and I figured I'd have to have all the coolness lopped off to fit my arms. Not so, said A-1 Tailors -- they would take the coolness and just move it up on the arm. There'd be a faint line in the tweed fabric, could i live with that? Yes, i could and I did and the jacket is fab. He also relined a vintage coat I adore very reasonably. I live a little further away now, but still take my too long stuff to A-1. read more
