I don't normally review chain restaurants, but: (1) 99 is small and local, and (2) it's soooo good. I stopped in for a bite after a long travel day and had a seat at the bar. I had a 23 oz Miller Lite that was so cold and crisp it burned the back of my throat going down. Refreshing! For dinner I had the chicken strips. It came with 2 sides, so I got broccoli and corn. A balanced meal at the bar, wow! The chicken strips were the reason I came. For those who have never tried them, the strips are trimmed, carved, and breaded by hand in-house. And, they are delicious! Lightly floured and crispy! The bartender was friendly and attentive. And fast! In and out the door in 20-25 minutes. And, for a real meal, the prices are great. Strips, 2 sides, and a 23 oz beer for $23 after taxes. Don't be scared off by the ever-fast-casual appearance -- this place is special! Stop in. Try the strips. I mean it! We were the very first customers seated when they opened on 5/6 to the 99 in Newport, RI. Our waiter was excellent -- attentive, friendly, and genuinely trying to make our experience a good one. He deserves every bit of praise and a solid tip for his service. Unfortunately, the kitchen completely dropped the ball. We each ordered the chicken tenders and french fries. The food arrived surprisingly fast (which should have been a red flag), but it was stone cold. The chicken tenders were tiny -- literally eight miniature pieces on each plate, -- and the fries were mediocre at best. For $50 before tip on what amounted to a very small appetizer-sized portion, this was outrageously overpriced and disappointing. We left hungry and shocked at the value (or complete lack thereof). The 99 used to be a reliable spot for solid, hearty portions at reasonable prices. This visit felt like they've gone way downhill on both quality and quantity while keeping the same high prices. If you go, hope you get our waiter -- he was the only bright spot. But I'd think twice about ordering anything from the kitchen until they fix these issues. Very disappointed. read more

This was the first restaurant I stopped at when I got to Newport. The food was a little underwhelming. I ordered a T-bone steak medium rare, which came out more medium. It was barely seasoned, to the point where I had to ask for steak sauce. I don't think it was worth its price. They had really good service and staff were very nice. read more

I've only been to this location one other time and the food and service was just as perfect the other night when I went there for a family dinner. Josh was an awesome server, friendly and personable. Put up with us for 2 hours lol the food was fantastic, fast service, restaurant and restrooms spotless. Very reasonable prices as well. Will definitely be back! read more

This place is OK, nothing amazing but nothing to complain about. The Shepard's pie was good, I like the potatoes on top to be a little more crispy by leaving in the oven slightly longer. The espresso martinis were nice and creamy. Our server was great, the menu can be quite extensive and she was helpful. Inside gives a regular fast casual feel. read more

We haven't been to a 99 in a long time and decided to give this Newport restaurant a shot. They are open for food until 9:30. We arrived at 8:45. Server was great, food good and drinks good. Then, turn 9:40 and the lights go bright, like get out. We were just finishing our drinks. It's rude to do this while people are still dining. This is my goodbye note to pub 99. I've always enjoyed their food, never had a problem there until now. I ordered the smothered tips. 32+$?!?!????! There was more veggies than steak, and the tips were low quality, fatty & chewy. I understand you have to make money, but don't mess with the quality of the food. Though 99 is a chain restaurant, it is not available in our state. We wanted a light lunch in Newport so we stopped in and we're pleasantly surprised. Marissa was a wonderful server with such a nice personality and attention to our needs. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and my husband had Caesar salad with grilled chicken. The food here was really good.. I love the fact that they have lettuce wedges here they are so rare to come by lol. The prices were decent and the menu had good options. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I ordered honey butter biscuits and there was mold in the biscuit, could have easily been overlooked but other than that everything was great. read more

My first 99 Restaurants experience is a bit different for sure. It was my 30th birthday and we got into a Mexican restaurant for lunch a bit late so we weren't hungry for my actual birthday dinner (we were visiting Newport for my big 3-0). Well, by 9pm, I got a bit hungry but most places were closed. So I made a joke saying "let's get (what happens after you eat a ton a edibles) and drink at 99 Restaurants." My fiancé thought I was joking but I was not and that's what happened. Our waitress was super nice and chill, she knew something was up because we ordered a giant appetizer, two giant cookies with ice cream for dessert, and had two drinks each. First time in this chain of restaurants. It definitely has the same vibe as an Applebees or Red Robin. I was so impressed on the quality of food, prices and service I received. My server Katrina was very efficient and attentive. I had a southwest chicken bowl and I made it a combo. Soup, entree and dessert were super tasty. Highly recommend this place. read more

We waited about 10-15 minutes for the server to come over and take our drink order. It took a long time for the food to come out. We watched our food sit in the window for several minutes only waiting for a salad to complete the order. By the time it made it to our table it was very cold. They remade a dish for us and we watched the chef in the kitchen eat off the plate with his gloved hands while we waited for the new food. The new food then sat in the window again for five minutes before the server brought it over. Service, food, and sanitation were well below par. I will definitely not return. I went here because it said it had baked haddock. Being in New England, I figured, it must be good. I asked the waiter if the haddock was fresh and he said, I don't know, I don't like fish... so I took the dive and order the baked Haddock, broccoli and side salad. The side salad was okay, the Broccoli tasted like it was frozen, but most importantly, even before I could bite into the fish, I could smell the fishy smell. I ate it, and it was serviceable as a meal, but it was not good... the cracker crumbs helped mask the fish fish flavor a bit. I saw decent ratings for this place, I'm not sure why. I consider it a middle of the road restaurant. Spend a little more and get a decent meal. There are too many places to get fish here in Newport. The ambiance was very average. I've ordered the lobster roll with fries and coleslaw twice to-go as take out. Both times, everything was great. The lobster roll is fresh and a good side. This particular location has a great feel to it, it's small enough to feel like home yet big enough so you don't feel crowded. I usually get the tips and tenders but I figured I would try something different so I opted for the Grilled Pork ribeye with Banana peppers and rice. The pork was juicy and full of flavor and the banana peppers added a nice spice to it. The rice was very good as well. My girlfriend had the buffalo chicken salad and loved it as well. Do not eat here. My partner had the fish and chips which were awful - greasy oily and thin portion of fish and very oily soggy and cold fries. I had chicken fajita bowl, equally as awful, cold and tasteless. We barely saw our waitress who was so busy talking and joking with her fellow waitresses that she basically abandoned serving us. We waited and waited and waited for our food and finally someone from the back kitchen brought out our food. Also, when we entered, the staff seemed disinterested and we had to wait to be greeted and seated although the place was only half full. We also noticed that the menu has been substantially reduced from a couple of years ago. Used to have a nice variety of recipes that were tasty with delicious sides. No longer. I would compare this restaurant to the likes of Applebee's or Chili's. The prices are as reasonable but the quality of food is much better. They have spectacular entree specials for $9.99. I've had the New Orleans shrimp, the balsamic grilled chicken, the New England fried shrimp, and the chicken and sausage al forno. I have not been disappointed with a single meal, both in portion size and taste. The 99 reasons to love Ninety Nine signs that hang around the restaurant are kind of cheesy, but I don't care. I had never really been to a 99 til recently, at least not since I have remembered. I also have about a 1 week memory. I have been coming here for trivia, and its unusually packed for Thursday nights. The food I have tried looks nothing more than frozen (expected), and the popcorn they offer you looks appetizing at first, but its stale/over salted. The bartenders are the WORST. Not only are they rude, but they give you attitude back! They certainly have favorites at the bar, and we will be neglected for over an hour with an empty drink! Many times we think to ourselves... "We would get another drink , but she won't even look us in the eye. If she isn't going to help us, we aren't going to give her more business. The only good thing I can say is that their deserts are BOMB. I can honestly say, if it weren't for the Trivia, I would never come back to a 99 again. Had an expired app coupon that they still honored. Just a few days late. Kind of a sports bar atmosphere. Good beer choices - some local some just past local. Staff is friendly, courteous and timely. Ordered potato skins and Double Play burger along with Rhode Island IPA (Rhode Trip)- really a NEPA since it is New England style. Have been here a few times since coming to RI. It is close to work.
