Went from the last real radio station to a bone clone. I'm all mp3s now.

Greg Kihn and Greg Stone are gone, and the station is trying to move into the 1990's. Not good moves either way.

The new management has hit a home run, capped off by the return of Laurie Roberts as the station's evening DJ.

But wondering if Chris Jackson will be returning - Greg & Chris were a perfect combo.

I'm never up early enough to catch Greg Kihn in the morning consistently, but from what I have heard it sounds fun, fun, fun.

This really pains me, but i have to write an honest review. KSCU is just not a very good station…read morefor one main reason: there arent enough deejays that work there. Thus, more times than not, there is a compilation playing rather than a real live person spinning music. Sometimes there will even be just dead air. Yes i could write about the glory days of KSCU and how it used to be an amazing college radio station, but then the review would be pointless. Yelping, to me at least, is about NOW. They do still co-sponsor midnight movies at the camera cinemas, and I give them a star for that. the other star is for the few deejays they do have. But i have to go back to this: with the same comps. playing the same songs over and over again, kscu is just really hard to listen to. someday they might get back to their old ways, but until they do, 2 stars it is.

As a former DJ & music director, KSCU to me is like the bad boyfriend you keep going back to. We…read morealways had this co-dependent relationship. KSCU has provided me with so many great memories and access to an amazing selection of music. And it also provided me with plenty of headaches. But no matter what, you will always have a special place in your heart for it [him]. But as a listener to KSCU, and all headaches aside, like any true fan of your favorite sports team, you stick by it [KSCU] through the good and the bad. I guess I kinda liken KSCU to... , the Warriors. Not the last year and half version of the Warriors with all of their bandwagon fans, but the Warriors that have sucked balls for the previous handfuls of years. Admittedly I dropped the Warriors when NBA went on strike years ago--hard to put up with whiny sports players who make ridiculous amounts of money. Anyway, KSCU has had some pretty great years previously, and sure the station is kinda at a low-point, but its way more accessible than abstract KFJC garbage (minus a handful of shows) & KSJS's over-programmed format. KSCU still offers some great programming (when live DJs are on, yes) as mentioned by other Yelpers. And its the easiest underground station to get involved with. So support it, yo!

"You…read moreknow they're playing it somewhere, but you have to find it."― Jeffrey Eugenides, The Virgin Suicides KKUP is a 100% listener-supported radio station that's been in operation for 40+years here in the South Bay and staffed only by volunteers. They play an eclectic array of music, have informative talk shows and music marathons to help drum-up support (i.e., money) throughout the year. I rarely listen to traditional terrestrial radio anymore, as I usually am either casting music I've downloaded or listening to commercial-free satellite radio, but when I do listen it's usually to KKUP. The Good: -It's commercial-free -I like their theme music shows such as Reggae Mondays, Gaelic Thursdays and Aloha Fridays. -There's also a gardening show I like to listen to on occasion, as well as a cooking one. The Meh: -The station signal is pretty weak and hard to pick-up at certain locations throughout the city. You can also listen online at http://player.streamguys.com/kkup/sgplayer3/player.php The Ugly: -These are not professional DJs but sometimes they're downright awful--the worst is the Reggae Mondays guy who mumbles his way throughout the announcements. You can probably guess why (allegedly), but I'm not going to say it... ;)

I used to be a DJ here from 1996 to 1998 and it was a great experience and still is a great station…read moreto listen to because of all the diverse music formats and shows the station had to offer featuring under represented music not found on commercial radio where I came across a lot of excellent music from a punk metal hard perspective as well as opened up my mind to other genres including jazz up to walking away with a production piece keepsake of my own. KSJS is a gateway and experience for those wanting to learn about broadcasting etc. and a great way to meet and work with good people. My passion was more audio over video and left with the basics of digital audio editing that can now be done with simple software on a home computer. For those at KSJS and however you are involved in the station enjoy your time there and get the most out of it. For those listening be open minded and stop judging the occasional belch because I got away with a lot more on A 2 to 6 am shift which would never have been possible on commercial radio and probably said at least one thing in the early am during a traffic report that probably was not ideal but not offensive. It was a wild time for me back in day meeting drunken rhythm Jazz and blues artists and being in close quarters with them laying down legal ids and liners from then station one of which was featured on a sports weekly segment because it was off the wall funny. Those days I do miss and wish I would have stayed involved longer but the real world called me in 1998 and I started my next chapter. Highly recommend the experience to SJSU students regardless of their major and to judgmental listeners, cut the station a break as you might not find this style of college radio or freedom anywhere else. Tune in online and phone in your requests and if it meshes with the DJs show the you might find it honored in 15 minutes or less as the technology is more instantaneous depending on your request. I wish KSJS well now and in the future with many years of longevity to come and yes it will change with history. Wild times in the 20th century and wild times today and KSJS covers it all. Support your local college radio station out there in San Jose. Peace out.
