I knew this was coming, but figured with KGO also dropping news, they would of reconsidered, since they would pick up some new listeners. KCBS doesn't please everybody. KLIV had some really useful traffic reports, covering the expressways and local streets that the other stations won't even touch. Plus I will miss the secret sound contest! This is the most disheartening format change KLIV's made since they dropped their rock format years ago.

When it comes down to it random kids from Cali suburbs can program a much better radio show than 40 year olds working for clear channel trying to hype the money makers. Plus shouts to Faco, long timer and the best radio DJ around! Im kind of shocked one of the commercial stations around hasnt picked him up yet. Straight up entertainment. As mentioned before, it has its ups and downs, dead air and broadcasting snafus. Sometimes the DJs just arent playing good music- but they dont tend to stick with it. So its totally hit or miss. Still, punch the button and 50/50 you are going to hear something new and incredible.

This really pains me, but i have to write an honest review. KSCU is just not a very good station…read morefor one main reason: there arent enough deejays that work there. Thus, more times than not, there is a compilation playing rather than a real live person spinning music. Sometimes there will even be just dead air. Yes i could write about the glory days of KSCU and how it used to be an amazing college radio station, but then the review would be pointless. Yelping, to me at least, is about NOW. They do still co-sponsor midnight movies at the camera cinemas, and I give them a star for that. the other star is for the few deejays they do have. But i have to go back to this: with the same comps. playing the same songs over and over again, kscu is just really hard to listen to. someday they might get back to their old ways, but until they do, 2 stars it is.

I only visit Santa Cruz twice a year, max, but I've actually listened to KZSC 88.1 more on my…read moredrives down the 101 near the towns of Gonzales and Soledad than I have when driving around Monterey Bay. Normally at that point of the drive, it's early afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, so I often hear the same DJs or at least the same shows that have been hosted by different DJs--college students, I assume. The music can be good, bad, or totally random, especially how the songs are juxtaposed. That's the beauty of true college radio, and I don't begrudge them their poor taste or lack of knowledge of seminal bands from the '80s and '90s--and yes, I know that they were born in the 2000s, but I was born in the late '70s and I still knew from a young age who Elvis, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and many of the Motown artists were. What does bother me about this station--and something ugly about true college radio--is how much dead air there is. It's not just too much time between songs or occasionally hearing hot-mic incidents; it's a more regular thing, and I've heard the same DJs apologize for the same issue over and over. Again, I get it that these are (mostly) college kids who are learning a skill, but they should be better, which leads me to believe there's very little to no engineering help for the DJs. There's also too much advertising, but I can't single KZSC out for that, and some of the hyper-local ads are funny. I'm glad it's my audio companion for at least part of my regular trips to SoCal, but it could be better. And they need more shows devoted to music.

Went by to pick up some tickets won after being caller number 5 and nearly could not find the place because it seriously doesn't look like a place of business. Then after finding the place we were unsure they were even open. The studio and office is on the second floor of this old building that has exterior stair cases. We walked up and looked in some windows. All were dark (it was a Sunday afternoon) except for the actual studio. The DJ had the window cracked and we could see he was talking live on the air with his headphones on. We waited a bit and listened. it was pretty neat. He was a cool laid back guy (wouldn't expect any less of a K*PIG DJ though!). Got our tickets and met a radio personality. Seriously tho the offices totally matches the personality of the station. When looking for a photo, I found some fun-facts about KUSP online: * It's non-profit community radio station serving listeners in Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, and South Santa Clara counties. * Now in its 37th year of operation, KUSP serves 40,000 listeners per week with a distinctive mix of news/information, music and cultural programming. * KUSP's volunteer programmers produce seventy percent of KUSP's schedule.
