This Memorial is to the left. The City of Temple City dedicated this memorial on November 11, 2016. During the unveiling of the new Memorial, there was a Flyover by the Golden Eagle Aviation Service Inc. (Golden Eagle). I think every city should have a space dedicated to honor the men & women of our Armed Services. They defend our country so we can enjoy our freedoms! The memorial is very eye-catching and a nice tribute! There is a two-tiered circular structure surrounded by an open circular barrier. Atop the top tier is a large star where the flag pole is centered. The top tier says, "We Remember, We Honor, We Celebrate". The lower tier says, "Temple City Veterans Memorial". It repeats on the opposite side. There are flags from each Branch of Service with their seal directly below. That is pretty thoughtful and neat! There is also the POW-MIA Flag and of course, our American Flag! There are a couple remembrance/dedication plaques nearby, but not on the memorial itself. There's an obelisk (Memorial Shaft) with a plaque attached to the base it has been secured to, is in memory of Joseph Kauffman, who died at 22 in France. It was dedicated to him by Walter P. Temple and his three sons. The other plaque is dedicated to all U.S. Veterans and presented by the American Legion, Temple City Post 279. If you get a chance, come take a few moments to remember & reflect.

Why are the memorials of Jackie Robinson and his brother, Mack Robinson, here in Pasadena? Jackie was born in Georgia and he passed away in Connecticut. He spent some time in Honolulu, Hawaii as a football player! His most well known accomplishment is playing baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Matthew "Mack" won a Silver Medal at the Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936. He is one of the best known graduates of the University of Oregon. Why is this sculpture in Pasadena? I had to look up some information... Jackie attended Pasadena Junior College and later attended UCLA! Mack was a Park Director at Lemon Grove Park in East Hollywood and passed away in Pasadena in 2000! Both brothers attended high school in Pasadena where they also lived with their mother and siblings! Aha! Very appropriate!

On June 8, 2022, I brought my young daughters to view it with me for the first time up close. I've seen it from the highway, but never knew what it was so I had to take to Google Earth. When I explained a bit of the history in simple, yet, honest terms to my kids, they both asked me "why?" "How could anyone be so evil?" We examine history so as to not repeat the atrocities... or allow them to occur. What is the price of freedom? Eternal vigilance. Even 7-year-olds can begin to learn this and should learn this. It's an L.A. landmark. I hope everyone would take the time to learn about it and then pay their respects in person. The structure stands at 75' tall. It is said to resemble many of Armenia's churches*. It was beautiful. The area was clean, but it was equally sad to see some of the concrete work deteriorating. There was ample, free parking. Got my mom's natural stone grave marker engraved here, and we couldn't have asked for a better…read moreexperience. My mom was buried in Santa Monica Woodlawn Cemetery's Eternal Meadow in March 2025 which requires a natural stone marker and speciality engraving. We initially went to Bourget Bros in Santa Monica because it was so close to the cemetery. Very nice people, who I'm sure are competent landscapers. But they were completely incompetent when it came to the process of creating my mom's grave marker. They messed us around for months. All I can say is that I wish we went to Valley Monument Company first. As soon as we arrived we could tell they specialized in engraving unique headstones, both traditional and natural stone. We brought our own stone, and Blaine helped us through every step of the process. He's been working there for over 50 years and you can tell he and the entire staff care deeply about executing your vision of the stone. The rock we brought had a challenging surface and wasn't smooth by any means, and the team here executed the engraving perfectly. Yes, it took a couple months, but it was extremely reasonably priced and I was utterly confident in their abilities. Come here if you need a headstone and don't mind waiting a bit, they know what they're doing and will execute it just as envisioned.

He also placed penmanship previously: 1st in 2023 - 2024 school year & 4th in 2024 - 2025 but I missed the emails to confirm for the regional competition. In his 1st regional competition, M place 6th (廖文凱 硬筆寫字 初級組 第六名)! \ (^ o ^) / The Southern California Council of Chinese Schools 2025 Fall Academic Competition Awards Ceremony (南加州中文學校聯合會 2025 秋季學術比賽頒獎典禮) was held on 11/30/25 at the Culture Center of Taipei Economic & Culture Office in Los Angeles. (洛杉磯華僑文教服務中心). It was quite a production... taking almost 2 hours! I'm so proud of my l'il one. I believe he was the only Cantonese student awardee in the ceremony (though I did see an awardee from the Chinese School of San Diego, not sure if the student was in the Mandarin or Cantonese program but it's a higher probability that the student is in their Mandarin program), even more proud that he's trying to continue to learn about his heritage & representing Cantonese since it's so difficult to find a Chinese school that teaches Cantonese. Due to the influx of 300+ people attending the ceremony, their private lot was jam packed but we arrived early enough to find free street parking. I also found out from our school that the Office was giving away books to attendees on a first come first serve basis; I picked up a Chinese chicken recipe book that provided the recipes in English & Chinese, & M grabbed a couple of Chinese comic books (we may need to use Google Translate's camera to try & "read" them). I'm not familiar with CCTECO, but there's a lot of art displayed in their lobby. There's also several conference rooms for meetings, & a large auditorium (where the awards ceremony was held). The Office is located on Telstar Ave. in a somewhat isolated part of El Monte. I was surprised to learn from their website of the original Culture Center in Los Angeles Chinatown (I born & raised in Chinatown & don't remember seeing this center), & the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) relocated the center to Santa Ana in 09/2005 to serve Orange County. I'm not likely to visit Culture Center of Taipei Economic & Culture Office in L.A. again unless my son continues to compete in Chinese school competitions.
