Surf's Up Beverly - Chicken and Catfish combo

Surf's Up Beverly

I swear everytime I've gone into a fish place recently they've all been out of catfish, but luckily…read morenot today! This black owned business has above average standing room in the waiting area, two TVs and an ATM with a good amount of seats/benches. Seems like it might've been an old chinese food joint with a few tables, but they opted for a pure takeout experience (which is unfortunately the trend nowadays.) Since it was my first time I thought I'd try both the fish and chicken combo along with the dirty rice. The total came out to be $24 with the wait being about 15 minutes. The staff overall were nice.      After leaving the place and checking the food. I realized that the combo dinner didn't contain a roll and coleslaw like advertised which was kind of disappointing. It did have the fries though. The requested lemon pepper was there, but they also seasoned the chicken/catfish with garlic powder, salt and parsley which is fine. Everything was fried hard, but not dry which creates the perfect pleasurable crunch. The chicken and fish tasted better than a lot of the restaurants in the area with the fish having a lightness to the breading that's sorely missed. Some of the chicken was weirdly tough though as if it was slightly undercooked.      Speaking of misses we have to talk about the dirty rice. Dirty rice is one of those dishes that seems like it either is absolute perfection or an abomination with no in-between. This unfortunately falls into the latter with it not only looking boring with all brown notes, but the initial taste as well as texture being an off putting creamy rancid trip to flavor hell. After a just a few bites my stomach turned which does not bode well for this dish. I have no idea what went wrong here, but it seems like it may have been sitting out too long. Even the smell was a bit rancid. At least it has a good ratio of ground beef to rice which a lot of places skimp on. They also attempted to add in some vegetables like peppers although they are barely noticeable.       Overall Surf's up is a good spot with friendly staff, decent prices, but some issues with quality. My advice is to make sure the cooking temps are correct and consistent. Definitely make sure if food is sitting idle, that it is kept at the mandatory minimum of 140 degrees farenheit to avoid it going rancid so quickly. Also, double check the orders before sending them out or edit the menu if it is outdated.

Stoney Island - 4pc chicken legs that was only 3

I decided to come here on 1/13/24 and try their chicken based off a video on Facebook advertising…read morethem and the positive comments that followed. The prices are super cheap for a good amount of food. This used to be a Seashell fast food restaurant. They conveniently have a drive thru which was great because it was so cold that day so I appreciated that. My order was the 30 piece legs and thighs with lemon pepper (it comes with fries), a strawberry lemonade and a mango lemonade. The young lady cashier who took my order was pleasant and very friendly so that was a big plus. I was anxious to try the food. The lemonades were pretty good, the mango was the tastier of the two. The chicken was a pure disappointment. The drumsticks were the smallest drumsticks I have ever seen in my life! But, the main issue was all of the chicken were way too salty to the point of not being able to eat it. I had such high hopes for this place. I paid a total of $34.13 which is an excellent price for all of that food but all of that goes out the window if you can't eat and enjoy the food. I don't think I will be coming back but again, I will say, wonderful customer service.

I hate that I can only give this place 1 star! This is the worst slop shop on the Southside. The…read moreservice is some of the worst I have ever experienced. The girls who work there are disrespectful, rude, and belligerent. There is no ambiance since there is nowhere to sit for a dining experience. Therefore, the ambiance focuses solely on how you are treated by the staff. As for the food, it's ok, again, for a slop shop it's ok, but because of all of the other issues with staffing, I will never ever visit here again!

This place was excellent! I loved the owner's story that was posted on the wall. Went from flipping…read moreburgers to owning a burger joint. It was clean, offered a bathroom for customers, and great customer service. I was so happy to support. They actually had vegan milkshakes and vegan burgers, and it was right in my own hood. Unfortunately, the people in that neighborhood are used to poor quality food and poor customer service, so the business was not well received. Hopefully, things change and they return.

Let's start by giving flowers. Someone who looks like everyone in Chatham took a chance in opening…read morea well known burger restaurant for us to be able to enjoy certain conforms in our neighborhood. The only thing needed in return is our support. I tried to do just that. I no longer live in Chatham but I was raised there so I thought trying a Fatburger for the first time, not in LA but where I came from was a must have experience. Over my lifetime in Chatham, it has been landlocked to Chinese, fried chicken spots, some soul food, pepes, gyros, chips from the corner store and so on. Of course there were big name franchises around too but to common denominator, the lack of ownership by faces that mirror the ones I see when I walk out of those establishments and back into the neighborhood. My experience at Fatburger was beyond piss poor. I was mocked and rushed in the drive through by the person taking my order. Then waited 30+ minutes in line where there were but two cars ahead of me. I didn't want to risk getting cold food so I parked and came in to get my food. I waited there some more before getting my food. The fries were hot so I thought the burger would be as well. I took a bite into a cold burger as pulled away and literally turned back into the parking lot to ask for it to be replaced. The oldest person working that evening took the burger and told the another worker "he said his burger cold" which was true. From there it went downhill. The employee taking orders forgot she/they/them were responding to a customer, I shouldn't have to add this but for context nothing about my delivery, ordering was rude. I gave her/she/they/them respect and courtesy that wasn't given to any of the other paying customers. She/they/them replies "yeah your food was cold, you left. Let me tell you what time you ordered, 809pm and it 846pm". I reminded she/they/them I parked and came in but never left. Next she/they/them disrespectfully said "where the fries at"? I told her/she/they/them those weren't a problem and was told to bring them back because she/they/them wasn't giving a refund without the fries. I didn't want a refund, I wanted hot food. I asked for the burger to be remade and was told "nah because you wasting my food". That was my breaking point. Let's be clear, I am saying SUPPORT this business. To add to that, we should expect certain treatment, courtesy and service when patronizing Fatburger. In return, we should give the employees respect for their services they give to paying customers. I am saying this to the employees, we must run a business like it's a business no matter your age or title. You are a representation of that business. Treat customers like people who are sacrificing their money for that pays your salary, no matter if you think you should be paid more. You agreed to provide a service for a hourly rate, just do that. Leave all of the extra stuff elsewhere.

I had the beef ribs, fried catfish, brisket, and ox tails and my mom the catfish. Beef ribs were great and moist. Arguable the best beef rib I have had but every bbq I been that sells it is also good so to each their own. Brisket was amazing and honestly some of the best brisket I have had. Even after going to places like terry black's, the flavor here was perfect. Good savoring with a little bit of sweetness from the smoke. Catfish was well season, fresh and crispy. And the ox tails while good, I wasn't going crazy for. Decent flavor but nothing I would get again. First time having ox tails too. The only negative was that the meat is more on the fatty side. While that didn't bother me, I know my mom disliked it more and if you prefer more leanness you may not like that. If I am ever in the area I will happily go there again and I pray they don't sell out of all their pork! Service was good. No issues. Overall ambience was nice and if you're worried it is sketchy or unsafe, it isn't. Friendly staff and people.

They give you a nice amount of food in a small rib tip. I was quite surprised. The sauce was good, but it wasn't the best I've had. I prefer the sauce at places like pitstop. I asked for mixed sauce, and my food was not spicy at all. That's my only complaint. My food was ready quickly, and I didn't have to wait.
