Not sure when the grill was last cleaned - I'm going to say its been a while - completely black,…read moredirty dishes on the side by the grill and on the the counter, had to ask to have the counter wiped down so we could sit down - at the time we walked in there was only 1 other person sitting at the counter and all the booths were empty. Some of the individuals behind the counter - I wasn't sure if they worked there or not - there use to be pride in going to work but not here - their appearance went right along with how the place looked overall - not good ( clothes did not look like they had been washed in several days), hoodies and jackets etc. The entire time we were there the dishes were not moved to the wash area and prep areas had not been cleaned ( some type of red substance all over them) but continued to be used - same knife to cut food was also used to cut open cheese package and cut toast. The food was saturated with melted butter the grits had no salt and about 3 tablespoons of butter on them (seriously - it never all melted there was so much) then there was the mystery chunks from the grill on my plate.... with every bit I just kept thinking "please Lord don't let us get sick" -I the think the server sensed something was wrong because she kept asking if we were okay and was the food okay.... needless to say - we will not be going back any time soon if ever. We were here in the evening about 6pm. It escapes me how individuals, managers and owners do not understand how the appearance of the employees and business itself go hand in hand with overall sustainability of a business.

Upon arriving to Jack's, what looked like the manager she was smoking out front by the front doors. It took forever for anyone to acknowledge us at the drive thru. Received quite a bit of attitude ordering ONE milkshake. Upon pulling up to the window, you see people eating and drinking while working, joking around and laughing amongst each other. We pay, then this thug hands us the shake and I KID YOU NOT, shake spilled all over the sides and he truly was trying to hand that to us with ZERO NAPKINS, ZERO APOLOGY, ZERO care in the world that the shake was spilled ALL around the sides and even got on my truck driver door. I proceeded to look at him as if he was stupid (which he is) like hello.... Maybe at least ONE napkin... he shuts the door and takes a minute to get the napkin, all while he's laughing at the situation with his coworker, Pumbaa. This place is trash. The people of the town told me since Jack's stopped caring about who they hired, service, quality of food and all around look of the place went to shit. Good luck and good riddance, will never spend another dollar there. HIRE A NEW STAFF! No one is going to go there anymore and I know Jack's needs the money to pay their little workers the $10/hr they make!

Latonya, who took our order at the counter, was a joy and so kind. I had the chicken tenders to eat and they were pretty good. I did have to wait a while to get ranch, but that's understandable as they were very busy. It's hard to find good staff in Dawson, but Jack's is doing a great job!

You just have to know the procedure, but it wasn't only me, a Northerner whose brain hadn't yet fully recalibrated for the local accent. Locals were confused too. Procedure is this: tell them your drink preference (I had water), pick up a tray, put it on the counter, pick out a main, three sides, a dessert, slide it down to the register, pay, and take it to your table. At that point do you begin eating? No! Remove your items from the tray and they come by and pick it up. Now begin! You may be thinking "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld but I assure you it didn't feel that way. Just the quirky way they run the place. The waitress did warm up after I was there a while, came over to ask where I was from, etc. And to try to convince me to come back for breakfast! This is cafeteria style, with everything prepared ahead of time and kept warm on steam trays. So how do they keep that fried chicken so crunchy and delicious? Perhaps the best I've ever had, the batter so crunchy you could probably hear me eating from another room, assertively peppery, the large leg and thigh pieces perfectly cooked and juicy. (White meat also available.) My sides were lima beans, turnip greens, and yams. The highlight was the yams: super sweet but not in a bad way, balanced by good seasonings. The beans were fine, a bit salty. The only disappointment were the turnip greens, too finely chopped and overcooked. The portion sizes were decent. Also included is corn bread. Two choices: baked or fried. Never heard of fried so I tried that. Interesting but a little chewy and not so much corn flavor; next time I'd get the baked. Finishing this rather large lunch was a challenge for me but I managed, while taking in the local ambience. I saved the dessert for later. Dessert? Yes. I was also asked on ordering what I wanted for dessert. The only one that appealed was the red velvet cake (the others were a cobbler and bread pudding) so I got that. I assumed it was included but when I paid I saw it was not. $4; no big deal. It didn't look that good, a thin 1 inch slice tightly shrink wrapped on a paper plate. Looks were deceiving. The first time I actually liked red velvet cake, a light crumbly texture and cream cheese frosting that tasted of more than sugar. With the amount of frosting this tiny slice was quite filling and I'm glad it wasn't larger. All this for a little over $21. I think this was including tip but I'm not positive. Either way, great deal!
