We're currently in our second year of cheer and she almost has her back handspring and is learning to be a flyer on their junior team. I love picking her up from cheerleading and hearing her excitedly tell us all about her practice time. Pros: -Top level, quality instruction. I WISH I could have gone to this cheer gym when I was in high school. They're really stringent about technique and won't allow you to progress onto a new skill until you have foundational skills in place. Tumbling this year has been split by skill level so there's more time to practice and improve. Coaches expect a lot out of the teams but I believe they're always fair and I'm really happy they're not easy during practice. -The teams are awesome and they really improve exponentially from the start to the end of the season. Last year our daughter wasn't on a travel team and I'm really looking forward to seeing her compete at a national competition. It's not only improved her physical skills as an athlete, but it's given her a different level of confidence that can only be gained through hard work and tenacity. -Island Elite is located in town. There are other all-star gyms but I don't want to have to fight through traffic to get there. Cons: -Cheer is not a cheap sport like soccer, and monthly tuition for all-star cheer is $200+ a month for three practices a week, plus $30-$60 for tumbling classes. I still totally think it's worth it because you're committing to being the best! In addition to your monthly practice tuition you'll also spend $1000+ on cheer uniforms, choreography and approximately $100-$200 on each competition your team competes in. Currently the all-star teams compete in two local competitions and 1-2 mainland competitions in the Spring. If traveling for cheer is not something you want to do, they also have cheer teams which practice once a week and only do local competitions. I think this is a good alternative if you're unsure of the time and financial commitment. The gym also offer opportunities to fundraise throughout the year. -During our first year of cheer I didn't always feel as though communication was the best, but now that we're on our second year I feel as though we are a lot better equipped in terms of what to expect and what questions to ask. -Island Elite is located in a warehouse that shares the same parking lot as Costco Iwilei. Unfortunately the practice gym is not air conditioned so it gets really hot especially during the Summer months.

I see progression between age groups which is impressive. Teams from the academy win awards. My granddaughter seems to enjoy the program and is making progress. Fees are reasonable for the weekly one hour class. The gym is located in an industrial complex on the west side of Honolulu. Parking is a chore and walking into the complex is downright dangerous with toddlers and cars flying. The entrance needs to have a car-free zone to improve safety. Seating for parents is manageable but uncomfortable. Restrooms are clean.

Nothing really changed except for the price of the hour (in my days used to be $6/hr. Today it's $10/hour & $5/half hr). They give you different wristbands which represents the time you paid for and planned to stay here for. Open gym happens every 1st Friday of the each month. Used to be open gym every Friday every week. When coming here, there are cubbies to place your items. Bring less and leave everything else at home. There's a sitting area for those who aren't jumping or tumbling too. Very minimal parking but a whole lot of street parking near Texaco gas/car wash. One thing that I'd highly recommend is just the sanitization or upkeep of the equipment. They don't have any wipes or sprays to provide and I'm not sure if they clean them at the end of the night. -./")\.-

Well, a few days ago........I was at the opera, then the next thing you know, I am at a UH WARRIOR FOOTBALL game! Let me tell you guys...........going to football game is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than going to the Opera! Lol! And let me tell you why! 1. You gotta love the electricity in the air of a football game! Loyal fans of Warrior football will come out regardless if they win or lose.............. 2. The tailgating, fellowship, & friendships............. 3. The various food vendors that serve their expensive, but sometimes tasty food. 4. The great half time show provided by the University of Hawaii band, and the funny games which they pick a few people from the audience to participate in. 5. And last of all, I had the privilege of sitting in the band section because of my Yelp buddy - Jules Y.! Man! I don't know how it can get any better then that, as I got to hang out with some fun college kids (they small kine Kolohe!) making me feel young like a college kid again! What a fun college atmosphere!!!! The only down side about sitting with the band was that they do no allow alcohol...... :( BOO! I didn't know this, as when I got to the seating area, I heard I had to get rid of my beer. So to get rid of of it, I started to tank/chug it down (btw, that was one of my specialties in college), because hell no if I was gonna dump my $8.50 beer! Lol! Well, we know what happened last night at the Homecoming game..........wished the outcome was the other way around, but you know what...........da boyz played hard, and sometimes no can help! Mahalo Jules Y. for the hookup! I will stop ragging you about the Opera now. Buwahahahaha!

My toddler attended the 2.5-year-old (youngest) class for about seven sessions. By the fourth…read moreclass, she was already telling me she was bored and wanted to go home. Each session begins with a short two-minute warm-up song--usually "Freeze Dance" from YouTube--after which the class shifts to free play with parent supervision. The setup includes a platform to jump into a foam pit, a long trampoline, large foam blocks to climb and slide on, and occasionally a child-height balance beam or bar. There's also plenty of open mat space for rolling, running, and general movement. The coach mostly walks around saying hello to parents, but unfortunately doesn't interact much with the kids. I understand that it's a tough age--two-year-olds don't follow directions well--so I get that the class leans heavily on open play. Still, it feels like something's missing. The right coach with the right energy can really engage kids at this age, but I felt like I had to be that energy just to keep my daughter even slightly interested. This is a good short-term class--maybe for a month--if you just need something for your kiddo to do. But in my experience, most kids in our class started losing interest by the 20-minute mark. I've heard the 3-year-old class is more structured, so I may give that a try instead. They do offer one free trial class, so definitely take advantage of that!

The University of Hawaii has produced many outstanding athletes and provided local residents with hours of entertainment! I was more up to date on volleyball when the coach was Mike Wilton. Those were crazy, fun times when fans would be dancing in the aisles, doing the Wave, holding up signs for their favorite players, bringing lei and goodies for the teams, and playing creative half-time games! The players who stood out the most for me were Aaron Wilton (son of the Coach), Jason Ring, and Yuval Katz, Sivan Leoni, and Naveh Milo (the three Israelis). Those players and a few other guys were so popular that they had to hide in laundry carts to leave the arena! They were Rock Stars! The Stan Sheriff Center would be sold out and the parking lot would be full! I don't know why the hype died down. I haven't been to a game in a long time until this season. My cousin's son, Kupono Fey, is a senior this year. I've been to the first two games of the year - he and the team have not disappointed. As an outside hitter, Kupono has set, dug, served, killed, and blocked so well! The teenie boppers have started to come out again, so this should be an exciting year for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors! Keep your eyes on Larry (a transfer from USC), 6'8" Stijn, Joe (#1), and Senior Setter, Jennings! Congratulations on winning the 2017 Outrigger Invitational Tournament! Hana hou!
