We have a winner! For quite a while we have been looking for a spot to eat dinner past 9:00 on a Friday night in Dubuque while on our way to Oelwein. 7 Hills has just become our go to place. First stopped in for lunch on our way back to Chicago on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Four of us that time as my brother and middle daughter were with us. We were quickly seated at one of the long tables and our server Kyle gave us the run down on the beer selections. I had Coke Zero - but everyone else enjoyed a beer. Two Hop Spatters and one Town Clock - all deemed delicious. I ordered the spinach salad with chicken and berries - comes with blueberry balsamic dressing - new and interesting flavor. Salad had a generous portion of chicken - good blend of cheese, berries, bacon and greens. Enjoyed it - and ate it all. Rick had the Italian Stallion sandwich with fries - decent sandwich. David and Margaret each had the 7 Hills Burger - cooked the way Kyle suggested - which I think was medium. Burgers were delicious. Marg substituted onion rings for the fries and declared this was a good choice. 7 Hills has delicious smoked meats - only available after 4:00. On our next trip to Iowa we left Chicago a little early - and got to 7 Hills in time for dinner - but too early for the live music. We asked to have Kyle as our server - since we got along so well the first time. We both ordered the Brisket dinner - mine with macaroni and cheese (not available every night) and coleslaw, Rick's with baked beans and slaw. The brisket is thick sliced and covered with your choice of a "regular" or spicy 7 Hills barbeque sauce. We chose spicy and should have asked for a side cup of additional sauce - as there were no bottles on the table. The jalapeno corn bread was moist and the jalapenos small enough to add flavor but not overwhelm your taste buds. And then - the beer. Rick had a Bold Blavatsky - a very smooth and delicious stout with chocolate, vanilla and toffee overtones. I snuck a sip and loved it. I had the Bi-Polar Vortex - purely because of the name. Lager with seasonal spices which made it flavorful. I liked it so much we ordered a Crowler to go. While we were at it, we also ordered a Hop Spatter and a Ginger Beer Crowler. Would have added a Bold Blavatsky - but at the time it was not available to go. Shared the beer with our Oelwein family who have declared that we need to bring beer with us on all future trips. What a great time we had in Dubuque while visiting several local places for just a few days getaway. We really were excited to visit 7 Hills brewery based on our love for craft beer and all the positive reviews and pictures. My wife and I travel the country both personally and for business all the time. We usually look for places like this typically. We are what you call foodies! It had an amazing vibe and atmosphere! Nice and clean too... We came in on a Monday night around 8pm. The business was slow as you can imagine on a cold winter night. We were greeted with hellos and smiles. Sat right at the bar, a friendly and informative bartender immediately stopped to fill us in on specials and menu suggestions. Off to a great start we both thought as we looked around this impressive establishment. That's when it all went downhill! We ordered the Steak Bites appetizers Med-Rare and a couple flights of beers to try all there creations. Beers came quickly and then followed by our Steak bites. Beers were all very impressive just so everyone is clear on that! Not the Steak sadly. Ours were way over cooked, NO pink whatsoever, no seasoning, no flavors and lot of hard grizzled chunks. Very disappointing on a 1 out of 10 it was a 1. Then we sat and watched the kitchen employees all singing having a great time goofing around while customers were still giving them business. We should have taking photos or videos to show the owners. All the local joints we talked to about this over our few days stay said that it was disappointing to hear because this place has much higher standards. We never said anything about this because we still had our dinner to come. We didn't want to be those people my wife and boyh said. Next our Breakfast Club sandwich came out and WOW was it spot on delicious! Amazing However we ordered the Mac-n-Cheese as our side and the noodles were hard and old as if they were never stirred and the air drued them out. Just no passion from the cooks i believe or pride in what they do. We both said even at the end of the night they should have know not to serve that and told the bartender to have us choose another side as an option. So we did decide to tell the bartender about this because it was horrible. He apologized and offered us something different right away. Which was the right thing for him to do, but at this point we were just completely over it. So we politely declined as we watched all the cooks /waitresses sitting at a table next to the bar playing on their phones hanging out. When the bartender confronted the cook about the issues with our noodles he blantly laughed out loud and looked right at us with the other staff. Not the bartender though! We decided we had enough at this point so we got our bill and left. Owning several successful large bars and restaurants ourselves this would never be tolerated or acceptable behavior for any customers to recieve in any circumstances. Unfortunately we would not come back the next time we visit. Very expensive meal to leave feeling the way we did. Especially during these unique times when all business owners are fighting to either retain their existing customers or get new ones that leave with happy that go on to spread the word about about how good the visit to your establishment was. Was excited to see Dubuque and try this place. It just so happened to be walking distance from the hotel we stayed in. The seating is family style. We opted to sit at the bar since we didn't feel comfortable drinking at a table with kids. That's where this experience went south for me. The bartenders stared at us and we waited for a few minutes until one decided to approach us. She seemed timid or hesitant but she warmed up to us eventually. However, when we ordered the first round she asked for a card. I've never had to give a card if we're doing dinner and drinks. Not sure why that was...(hmmmmm). I had the chicken sandwich which was slightly spicy but good. I wasn't impressed with the fries. The strawberry cocktail (name escapes me) was really good and well made. A couple at the bar continued to stare at us the entire time we were there. At one point I stared back and the woman looked away quickly. We were the only African American patrons in the establishment which is fine. But we didn't expect to be eyeballed by customers and staff. It's 2019. Stopped in in a rainy Sunday afternoon for a cold beer and something to eat. It's a cute little place in downtown Dubuque. Not a lot of parking available, we parked in the lot for the hotel across the street. The place boasts an industrial vibe and it's roomy with lots of tables. The downside if this is that the ventilation blew cold air on us rather strongly no matter where we sat. The staff was friendly and helpful right up to the point where they took our plate of nachos off the table without asking if we wete done....we weren't, there was still food on the plate. I had the Cuban which was alright, nothing spectacular, and t i will say the menu featured a nice selection. Took our entire baseball team here when we found out we were rained out - accommodating 40 of us short notice. Servers were great, handling 10 separate checks,. I eat at a lot of restaurants - life on the road. Staying at the hotel across the street this local pub/brewery came recommended. I took a seat at the bar and looked at the menu. The menu is not huge, but it has some good choices. Smoked meats, fish, crab cakes and chicken. I ordered the fried pickles to start. Good choice. They are tart and very tasty. For the entree I chose the Cluck Boi. Comes with 1/2 a smoked chicken, red beans and rice, a veg and a jalapeño corn muffin. Without a doubt the chicken was the best I have ever had. I took one star away because we went around 11:30 on Saturday and the service was SLOW. Took us a while to even order drinks and then waiting on food took forever. Stopped in on a recent visit to Dubuque. I had never been to this area, but it was close to my hotel. When I walked in I was greeted by a girl standing at the front. Not only did she give me drink and food menus, she engaged in conversation for a few minutes and was incredibly welcoming. I sat at the bar, but the tables are all picnic table style. It wasn't super busy, but definitely creates an atmosphere to interact with others. I ordered a beer flight and they were all delicious. I have to say this place nailed it. I didn't have dinner but everyone seemed to enjoy the food. There is a pretty extensive menu for a brewpub, which isn't common to see. If you're in the area you should definitely stop in! read more

I won't even touch the lack of covid safety precautions this restaurant has publicly detailed. The 7 headed monster is a decent IPA. I've tried quite a few beers and they're fine. But not something I will purchase for home consumption or seek out. The environment here was pretty cool. Big space and unique. I did enjoy hanging here and they hosted some unique events. I dont feel great being here anymore with the recent mask violations the restaurant has received and publicly ridiculed. Food is fine at best. The menu reminds me of the type of sampling I would find at a brewery in Chicago, but poorly executed. Generally dry and unique for the sake of being unique. I greatly enjoyed their Brussel sprout app but the entrees are very hit or miss. For the price, your money is better spent elsewhere. If you're going here because the group your with chose this and need something - the fungus among us is usually pretty good. Supported these guys for a bit because Dubuque needed a brewery and it was exciting we had one. But now we have a few. My first experience was a five star experience, I was greeted promptly, the food was good, the atmosphere was great, and the beer was real good too. My second experience...not so even close to the same. I was not treated when I walked in, I stood at the door for a couple minutes before walking to the bar, sign says "please wait to be seated". The beer was still REAL GOOD. The service was an afterthought, I didn't catch her name, I was given a menus when I sat down, a beer when I ordered and that was it. The food, Slamin Salmon, was less than "Slamin" it was over cooked, the potatoes were flavorless and the cornbread muffin just came out of the fridge. I would surely have said something in person instead of posting, almost anonymously, but I was never asked again about my meal after it was set in front of me. I think it may have been obvious it wasn't great, the plate was still full and she may not have wanted a bad comment. Ok I will give it another try, but I'll stay in their lane, decent bar food, burgers and chicken. The beer will also bring me back, it is soo good.
