Nice shop; all about the plants in here. I say the previous, having come in looking more for ornaments to place around my garden. The back part of the garden had a store, with artist handmade stuff, (basics like wind chimes and bird feeder). The staff was friendly/helpful enough. If your driving, be mindful it's on the westbound side of the street; could quickly miss the parking lot, shared by the church next door. I'm keeping in mind, this is Vanvouver, Wa, not Portland, Or with bike racks everywhere, but the staff was nice enough to let me leave my bike up front while I shopped around. Maybe a rack for two bikes in future would be a good addition to this place, but overall, I like it. read more

This nursery is walking distance from my house, so it's very exciting to check out regularly. I'm very impressed with not only the quality of the plants, but the vast selection they carry. Sometimes it's nice to just wander their beautiful gardens and take in all the beauty. It's right on Mill Plain, which is super busy, but you would never know once you're inside their gates. Prices are pretty comparable to other nurseries in the area, and they have sales if you subscribe to their newsletter. read more

I don't get it, this is supposed to be a high-end customer service nursery, but every time we go there we get miserable service. Yesterday when we went there, we asked a simple question regarding a particular kind of blackberry, the response from the staff was blunt... "We don't carry that." No explanation, no apology, no offer to help us find it, just, we don't carry that. We felt snubbed. the same thing happened last time we went too. There seemed to be no interest in customer service. It is unfortunate, it's kind of a fun nursery... But we won't be going back. It's like they've gotten too big and too fancy for their own customers. Today I went to the 7 Dees nursery in Portland and I asked the man there the same question Although they did not have it in stock, the man was very helpful and told me he'd order it for me, no problem. First visit and wont be my last. Called ahead to see if they had any arborvitaes in stock. Indeed they had just got a load in but they were not on the sales floor yet. I went in person to check them out, and was happily shown them in the back loading area. "B-Mac" whose real name is Brian was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. After squaring away our arborvitae order, he spent at least 30 minutes walking us around the nursery helping us choose some evergreen shrubs. He gave us details and answered our many questions along the way. Great selection, helpful staff and the "gift shop" was pretty impressive with cool décor. read more

Shout out for Shortys! This place is near my house but I've never been inside before. I stopped by today looking for what is needed to bring a plant inside for the winter. I know nothing about plants but the cashier was super helpful. She knew all about my specific plant and helped me pick out fertilizer and explained when I need to use it. I used to LOVE Shorty's. I loved it more than Portland Nursery, which was an inconvenience since I live in PDX. I loved the selection, the beautiful and inspiring container garden displays, and the friendly and helpful staff. I also loved Shorty's bonus features: a giftshop full of trendy, garden-themed items, and lovely cats to pet. And all of these things are still true. But, as another reviewer pointed out, something seems to have changed lately. My major issue is that a huge Monrovia display is now taking up most of the prime plant space, which means that stock is way, way down. There are fewer variaties and fewer individual specimens. But the staff are still helpful, and the place is not super busy, which is pleasant. There are also variaties you won't find elsewhere. read more

I have mixed feelings about Shorty's. I had never been to Shorty's but wanted expert advice on trees and plants. On my first trip, I purchased a tree. I was very impressed. The employee working in the garden area was very friendly and helpful. At check-out, the cashier was also very friendly. When I came home, I raved to my husband about my experience and told him that we should only give our business to Shorty's. On my second trip a few days later, the employee working in the garden was also helpful but the cashier was somewhat rude. I am not very knowledgeable about plants (thus my primary reason for going to Shorty's). As the cashier was scanning my Hostas, she mentioned that slugs like to eat them and suggested buy anti-slug pellets. I told her that other Hostas in my yard had many holes in them and now I know why. She replied, "Did you just move here?". I told her that I had moved here 7 years ago but that I wasn't a green thumb. She said, "You should know about slugs. Everyone does." It seemed condescending and made me feel embarrassed. I think that was inappropriate and not a helpful comment. Pros: some employees helpful and friendly. Great selection of plants laid out well. Offer plants that grow well in the PNW. Enforce mask mandate during Covid. Cons: A rude cashier. Pricey compared to big box stores. read more

To be honest I've never been in shorty's? But my wife has many times as she's the gardener not I? and she asks me to write the review! We now have a few of shorty's bushes growing on our place now and I need mention three cherry tree's which myself and these pesky bluejays are in competition for the cherry's every spring? A apple tree, a pear, and once a peach from which we harvested and turned into the most delicious jam! Unfortunely that tree died after one trim? I cant close this review without mentioning the Tomatoes. sage, onions and Cucumbers we harvest every summer. oh and Zucchini too! Well 5 stars*****! Similar style of nursery as Portland Nursery, but smaller with a lot less selection, as you would expect for a nursery in a smaller city. I'd say its main virtue is that if you live in Vancouver, sometimes you can find what you are looking for her, in which case you have saved yourself some time compared to having to go to Portland Nursery or Tsugawa. They all have similar prices, if you want cheaper plants Means Nursery can be a better bet. I started buying a few things from Monrovia online, and those have to be delievered to a local nursery, and Shortys is one that can do that. So that is pretty handy if you live near Shortys. If you are looking for less common plants then you will want to try nurseries like Joy Creek, Cistus, and Xera. For native plants try Watershed Garden Works, they are an excellent nursery. read more

Called and was told fig trees were on sale, "all fruiting tress are $20". I asked specially about gigs and was told "yes, they're on sale". I drove across most of Vancouver to the store and found a few decent plants. I was looking for other perennials, but couldn't find anyone to help me. Anyway, the person at register told me they aren't on sale and asked if I'd like to speak with a manager. The manager stated "sorry you made the drive, they are full price". Not interested in helping resolve the issue or even finding out who told me incorrect info. I'd suggest Portland Nursery or other professional nursery center. We always get the best advice, service and plants at Shorty's. This weekend was no exception. We needed to replace some plants but weren't sure with what. Hawaii Bob gave us several interesting options and advice and made sure we got the proper soil amendments. We could have stayed all day looking at the different plants, but with Bob's help we were on with our day quickly. read more

Shopping at Shorty's is a great experience. Plants are very healthy and hearty. I love how everything is creatively displayed. Staff are all friendly and knowledgeable. Went specifically to order compost/dirt for delivery. Wanted 4 yards with a $60.00 delivery charge. They did not have their regular big truck so with their smaller truck it would take 2 deliveries for two delivery charges. Not a good way to do business read more

Shorty's has turned nasty. After years of shopping at Shorty's (both stores) there has been a falling out among employees at the Mill Plain location. The employees are visibly feuding, ignoring customers and clearly not wanting my business. I hope you have better luck, but after three consecutive visits during this spring, I have had enough. The loveliest nursery found in Vancouver. They have a wonderful selection of indoor and outdoor plants of all kinds, decorations you won't find anywhere else, but what I love the most is the staff. Their information desk has identified many plants and insects that I have brought in samples of, and is more than knowledgeable in what they identify. I love that they offer this service, as I haven't found another place that does. I've been going here for years and years for plants, pesticides, information, planters and bark chips. Dont choose Shorty's! Shorty's used to be a great place to get plants and soil, but lately something has changed. While looking for plants I was watched (like I was going to steal a plant) and when I asked to look at soil I was told "we don't let people out there". When I tried to explain that I had looked at the soils in the past the lady told me "If you want to look at soil he have samples in the boxes". I then chose to leave and went to City Bark, where the staff was helpful and let me roam and choose the soil I needed. Although Shorty's is in my neighborhood, they wont be getting my business anymore! read more

I've shopped at Shorty's off and on for over 12 years. I'm sad to say I won't be there again. For over 10 years I raised raspberries in my backyard. My 12 x 12 foot patch would often yield 50 or so pounds of raspberries. A couple of years ago they were destroyed by rain rot during the winter. I purchased 8 plants from Shorty's the next year in 2012. Every plant was dead in only 4 months. 5 years ago I purchased a red currant bush, which is a fairly hearty plant. My previous bush had died after 9 years. The currant bush I bought was planted in the Spring and died that Fall. 6 days ago I purchased 3 Hood strawberry starts, 2 perennial flowering plants, and a Bee Balm. Yesterday, when I went to water them all three strawberry plants were brown and wilted, the perennial were also brown, and the Bee Balm stalks were wilted. I'm a pretty good gardener and most always do well with whatever I grown. I'm not sure what Shorty's does with their plants, but I'm on a fixed income and can't spend money on something that either doesn't work or doesn't produce. Hence, I won't be back. read more

I am looking for a few odd items so I went on a few days ago to find them(pennyroyal and love-in-the mist). I have been shopping here on and off for a couple of years now. They have some advantages and disadvantages for the consumer. Another reviewer noted that the customer is no longer allowed to look in the back corner where the large and awkward bags of dirt are in a fenced off corner. I can only surmise they may have had some theft issues that led to this decision, however I find it difficult to see how considering the oversized nature of the product and the fence that surrounds it. That aside, they have been and continue to be very helpful with finding the cause of unhealthy plants or identifying unwanted plants I don't recognize. They have a wealth of organic gardening products. I can find one line of such products at Lowe's and one at Home Depot, but not shelves of it as Shorty's carries. They are also very knowledgeable and helpful in regards to how the products work and what product is the best one for your particular need. When it came to underground pest control (diggers), they highly recommended a product that did not work for me at all and when I tried to return it, they were very pleasant, but would only provide half the purchase price in store credit even with a receipt in hand after a week or less. I did find a different product elsewhere that finally drove the buggers out. The credit back did bother me a bit, but they are much more helpful and a better resource for knowledge than the big home improvement or big box stores with a garden section, I still take a chunk of my business there. I guess I was spoiled by Lowe's and Home Depot. When I purchase products there, if they don't work and I return the unused portion within thirty days, I receive a full refund. I like the gift shop, but can rarely enter due to sensitivity to scent and a lot of chemical scent from products wafting through there. If it's a bit of a windy day and their doors are kept open, I can dive in for a few minutes before having to re-emerge for a breath of fresh air. The quality and variety of pots for plants surpasses that of the box stores, but just as everything else here is pricier, so are they. In the long run however, I find they are worth it. I like that I can purchase eco friendly recycled plant pots there with a drain section built in. I can't think of anything for a garden short of fencing one might need that they don't have or can't obtain. Everyone there is so eager to help, I always feel welcomed and that coupled with the depth of their knowledge and combined experience is why I keep returning. They have a frequent shopping program, as many shops do nowadays. This consists of earning points that can be redeemed for cash over a period of a couple of months. Then in the ensuing three month or so period, you can cash in your earnings. This helps offset the extra cost of their products. However, the fact that this is a local business and it keeps my money circulating through the local commerce market helps to bring my business back also. There is also an email sign up with garners the recipient with coupons occasionally. They also have regular free gardening classes covering a variety of topics from hardy native perennial species for the garden, to how to attract birds and butterflies. This community service is something I highly reccomend taking advantage of and yet another reason I want to support this local garden shop. Just a tip, if you are leaving after shopping there and don't want to be forced to turn W onto Mill Plain, head towards the back of the parking lot and turn W in the road just after the speed bump. At the side road you exit on, turn S towards Mill Plain. This brings you to a stop light where you can take a L and head E on Mill Plain. read more

I have been to Shorty's several times now, and I have to say that I am less than impressed. The amount and variety of plants is decent but the health of some of them is less than stellar. I have also noticed that the staff is less than friendly with a slight attitude of "I'm better than you." As if their time would be better spent elsewhere. One of the main issues I see is that they seem to not have as much knowledge as they should, being a nursery and all. There were several different varieties of full shade plants arranged on stands in the direct sunlight, which explains some of the poor health, and when I asked about the care of some of the plants I was interested in, I received a lot of "I don't know"s. So, my personal suggestion would be to spend your money elsewhere, like Yard and Garden Land or Northwest Nursery Outlet where the people are friendlier, more knowledgable and you get more from your hard earned dollars. read more

I have shopped at shorty's for 25 years. I have landscaped 3 houses. I bought 3 hydrangeas in March. They were sitting at the Mill Plain store. They had been out in the extreme freezing weather all winter. A sales person said that the Pistachio Hydrangea is beautiful in shady yards. So, I bought the last 3. I was told if I had any problems to return them. One of the 3 plants finally started getting leaves in June. I watched the other two and they got nothing. So I took them back because of the severe freeze 2 of the 3 did not survive. These plants cost me $19.99 each and were about 4 inches above the pot. A man whose name was Jeff , who he said was the manager, came up to the clerk when I was explaining the situation and he took me back to the customer service desk. He dumped the plants out on the counter and showed me that I had less than 1/2 inch too much soil around the top of the plant. I know to keep mulch down to not kill the plant. He then offered to pay me for one plant. I told him that was unacceptable. He said that was the best he could do. Then after being persistant that I had done nothing wrong, that the deep freeze had killed two of these, like many plants in Clark county. Then like a car salesman he proceeded to barter with me. OK if you will replace the two, I will give you the second one for 1/2 price. I told him that I thought that it felt like I was buying a car. And, I would have never had this terrible customer service at Lowes and Homedepot. Who by the way would have charged a lot less. I had to agree to the "DEAL". We went out to the yard and they had these plants for $19.99 in a much larger container and a lot taller. I have pictures to prove this. He then said I should try this wonderful new fertilizer. He had free samples. When he came back, he knew I was totally upset about how I had been treated. He accused me of yelling, which I sure felt like doing, but was very irritated but not yelling. I did not use any inappropriate language of did I divert from the issue. He then proceeded to say he would give me a ticket worth $15.99 for the ladies dinner coming up. HELLO--- but he refused to give me the $10.00 difference, but a dinner at their store that had me totally frustrated. I don't think so. I paid the $10. plus tax and left with feeling sick about the way Shorty's had treated me. I told this story at a BBQ that I had at my home last night. A gentleman said he had the very same experience with shortys. He had spent over $800 on plants and had a couple die. Same experience of it being our fault and no help in replacing the plants. I will continue to tell my story to warn everyone about this horrible experience. I would not recommend Shortys to anyone, but suggest that they go to Portland where plants can be found a lot cheaper and you can get a warranty for at least a year. Shortys will continue to treat people this way as long as they feel that they have a monopoly of the nursery business in Vancouver. read more

There is nothing wrong with Shorty's Garden and Home. It is no longer locally owned, which is what I have learned recently. They are a full service garden center and have a wonderful gift shop also. Their prices, accordingly, are full service garden center prices which might be higher than some other places. It's a lovely place to walk around and look at their selection and they have knowledgeable people to help out. read more

We had such a lovely time a couple of weeks ago at an event a couple of weeks ago. They had fun activities for kids like face painting, planting flowers, and making a bird feeder. They had fun raffles, we even won one! Everyone there, the staff and guest vendors were super knowledgeable and helped educate us on how to plant and care for our new berry bushes. Shorty's customer service is so terrible I made a Yelp account just to write this review. I placed a delivery order for a 9am drop-off, only come to find out that on the day its supposed to be delivered our delivery time is actually 4-6pm. This was a scheduling mistake on their end, and the manager was unapologetic about the mistake and instead of trying to come up with a solution, simply tried to refund me for the whole purchase. I didn't want a refund at all since I still need the garden soil I already paid for, I just wanted my delivery to be earlier because that is what was confirmed on the original order. The manager again just offered a refund without apologizing. While I appreciate that they were willing to do that, that was not resolving the issue and the manager didn't seem to care at all. I am disgusted at the quality of customer service from Shorty's and will not be purchasing from here again. read more
