I received my order in 48 hours. 38 plants. Individually packaged. Exceptional packaging and well watered. No breakage. Plants are beautiful. Healthy. And much larger than expected. I live very remote and deliveries are challenging. I requested a particular shipper to be used and they followed through with that. I'm not used to this experience! This is an excellent company read more

Means cut all of the central (growth) leaders on my order of evergreens. These trees will never grow tall; unlike trees with hard branches, evergreen branches are soft and cannot be trained to become a new trunk. Means did not care about their customer, instead caring only about cramming the trees into smaller boxes to save on shiping costs. I'd have paid extra if they'd have called. read more

Ordered a plant and they shipped it ups. several times ups tried to update the delivery date to an earlier date, but this place wouldn't allow it. So my plant is currently in storage at an ups facility while we experience a major heatwave. Never again! read more

Jill Masterson provided a level of customer service above and beyond even though my purchase was through another company very far away - thank you! read more

I'm a hobby botanist with over 90 houseplants and an elaborately landscaped property. Currently, we're in the process of expanding the landscaping with robust, drought-hardy evergreen perennial shrubs and trees that require minimal care outside of semi-annual pruning. We go to Means because for the low prices, their selection is unbeatable, especially if you need items in larger quantities - they do wholesale. Since I'm experienced, I prefer to shop independently; if there's something about which I'm uncertain (beyond the easy reference size and care info typically located on the tags), I find that a quick internet search is helpful. If you're less certain about plant characteristics and performance based on classification and soil type, sun exposure, irrigation needs, etc., you will need to ask an associate there or better yet, bring someone with you who knows their plants and can assist. What other reviewers say is true - they do lack associates on their grounds, so be mindful of that. They have large-scale commercial cultivation operations adjacent to their retail location, and most employees are likely dedicated to those efforts rather than to customer assistance. read more

I've been in a couple of times now. The staff are nice but not very knowledgeable sadly. The product selection is good. They carry the basics nothing really rare or unusual. They really need help on signing and pricing. Luckily, they are reasonable (having been a plant buyer for years) but they could greatly improve here. Worth visiting if you know what you are looking for. read more

I come here pretty often since I'm one of those Hwy 30 commuters. This nursery has a great selection. Trees, shrubs, flowers, herbs, and more. When I come here looking for something they have it. I actually went there for my Christmas garland this year. It was only $1 a foot. It was more expensive at Fred Meyer. Sometimes it can be difficult to find someone to help because they are usually out watering plants and such. That's not a problem because I like the independence. However, I've never had a particularly chatty person help me here, which makes it difficult when you are not quite sure what you want or need. If you need a lot of hand holding or advice, this may not be the best nursery for you. There's no real helpful person that's eager to assist you in your landscaping needs but I guess if you had a specific question they might answer it for you. Maybe I just go during off hours or something. This is a nice nursery to walk through and shop at. If I have plant questions or need suggestions I might go to another nursery for that particular purchase or google it first. read more

Means is a great local nursery. There isn't a huge variety like some of the larger nurseries in Portland, but I have always found what I needed and the size is perfect for our small community. The staff are friendly enough, but don't offer much help/advice. The prices are good and the sales are awesome! This is a business I frequent several times a year and have always been satisfied. read more

This nursery does not have as much variety as the bigger ones like Al's or Portland Nursery. However, once in a while I find something I really like that is at a great price. Here are some examples|: Burgundy Queen lilac for about 7 dollars. Way bigger than the 6 dollar lilacs they sell at the Klager lilac festival. Ceanothus Darkstar for 3 dollars. These were ultra root bound in tiny pots but are growing really well in my yard. One gallon Monrovia camellias for 12 dollars. When you can find these elsewhere they tend to cost 20 dollars. Genie magnolia, big enough it just barely fit in my car, for 40 dollars. This would be probably 80 dollars if you found one at another nursery. Proven winners candy oh rose for 12 dollars. Keep in mind, however, that some of these they have sold out because I bought all of them. read more

I love this store. Although not a lot of variety, what they do have is well priced and I never have had my plants die. We paid $19 for a weeping cherry tree- Portland price -$49. Happy happy gardeners!!! read more

As a gardening enthusiast fairly new to the area, the thing that stood out to me the most here was the low prices. I have been doing a lot of nursery shopping in Portland, and the prices at Means made my jaw drop in happy surprise on many plants. We bought a lot and will be back. I agree completely with Misty concerning the service, but if you're independent, you'll be fine. read more

I like the selection they offer and their prices but there are a couple things I don't like about this store. First of all, when coming from US-30, it is so easy to miss because they don't have any advance signs telling you that you are approaching. If you blink for a second, you missed it and you have to go several miles before you can make a U-turn and return. Second, this store works like Wal-Mart. You go, pick your own plants, get to the cashiers and pay. They should have some employees who can help with plant selection and offer guidance. A lot of nurseries offer this. read more

I have been working on my landscape for almost 9 months now and building in phases. Means is the local nursery so naturally I started there with plant selection. The reason for my poor review is due to their customer service or lack of. I have placed plant orders 3 different times and was told they would order them in by such and such day and that they would call me when the order arrived. Each time I went to pick up my order no one had a clue and of course they never called me like they said. It has now been 2.5 weeks since I placed my 3rd order with them and they still haven't contacted me. I actually got into a short argument with the manager because no one could tell me what the status was of my order. She asked what I ordered and I'm like didn't you guys write it down...? A simple clipboard would work. I thought the person taking my order wrote it down somewhere. I spent 10 minutes with the person I ordered from in person going over specific plants and quantities and they had no clue that I even placed a order. I'm done with Means nursery and will be spending my money elsewhere. read more
