I live in an Asian shaved ice desert. Perhaps that's why I'm already super enthusiastic when I…read moretravel and find some. Simply the gratitude of it being present in middle America sets me up to have a good experience. Someone complained in a review about the "false advertisement" of having shaved ice as most Americans know it. It's hilarious to be that they assumed it to be what they know as shaved ice. If they had tried the Asian shaved ice, I guarantee they'd enjoy it and wouldn't have complained. If you know about other culture's shaved ice, you're open to try new things and let yourself be surprised. I digress. The shaved ice found here is the Korean version, Bingsu. It's very similar to other styles, but this one is mostly milk based. The menu is pretty extensive, including smoothies, yogurt, juice, coffee, boba tea, and of course shaved ice cream. We came for the shaved ice cream, so we tried the strawberry & mango first. It mixed the two, which surprised me since I had assumed it would be half and half separated. The combination worked beautifully. There was whipped cream, strawberry and mango syrup on top and we asked for mango popping boba. It was so delicious! The best way I can describe it is a feathery texture that melts in your mouth. We also tried the coconut one which came with condensed milk and coconut shavings. We also added strawberry popping boba. Highly recommend either/bob. Since the consistency is light and fluffy, even though the portions are generous, you don't feel stuffed afterwards. The place is spacious and has tall ceiling, making it very open. There's seating available on both floors. I enjoyed the Korean music playing and the tv translating the lyrics. The volume was just right (as opposed to some reviews out there complaining it was too loud). I probably wouldn't try to make calls inside though. The guy at the counter was super nice. He kept smiling really big the whole time he talked to us. Made me smile too. He also told us about the Korean cheesecake they have for sale. It looked delicious and fluffy so I got the coffee one. It was more of a sponge cake than cheesecake but it was delicious. Highly recommend.

It was super cute in there, I love the vibe and how there is an upstairs and downstairs. We ordered the strawberry mango and green tea shaved ice. They weren't the best I've had but they also weren't bad. I wish they included some toppings. It definitely isn't super authentic when it comes to the tradition Korean shaved ice. And the flavor is good but not the best. Everyone there was nice as well.

The vibes were great, and the staff were super friendly and welcoming. The drinks weren't quite what we expected, though. I asked for a recommendation and mentioned that I like my coffee sweet, so she recommended the Sponch latte. For my taste, the coffee itself wasn't sweet the sweetness mostly came from the foam on top. My friend got the pumpkin spice matcha, and she could barely taste the pumpkin spice. I like to keep my reviews honest and based on my own experience. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and service, but the drinks didn't quite hit for us this time. I'd be open to going back and trying something different!

Spice Merchant is the standard for so many culinary wants & needs. You want an esoteric spice? Yeah, no problem, check the rack or ask a specialist to hook you up. Need a flavored syrup to make your favorite morning beverage? Yup, Torani is on the rack in a zillion flavors. Kitchen gadgetry? They got you, fam, from silicone to stainless steel. Point is, while the name is 'Spice Merchant', there is much, much more inside and forgive yourself for getting lost or distracted. And then there's the star of the show, at least for me: the artisanal coffee. Their selection is simply sine qua non. Whether you want light roast or dark, or in between, flavored bean or just roasts, beans whole or ground, Spice Merchant has you covered. I am an absolute devotee to their French roast, the Old San Francisco blend. I get a pound, ground, and I treat myself about once a week with this gift from the coffee gods. Dark and a bit smoky and it accentuates all the best notes from the bean. Maybe coffee isn't your cup of, well, tea. You're in luck if you're more with the leaf, because their loose leaf tea selection is unparalleled locally. If you prefer bagged teas and less mess, their boxed tea inventory seems endless. All of this is in its own separate nook, away from the powerful coffee aroma and focused more on the peace that is tea. It's easy to get crowded amongst the aisles, but that's only because there is so much to choose from. Hot sauces, dip mixes, or other condiments are all over. Spice Merchant draws in local suppliers (hello, local honey) and small vendors from outside the area, so you're really shopping brick and mortar here. Anyone can click-click-click and order online, but if you want to enjoy the shopping experience, then you should make the time to visit Spice Merchant. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time.
